At one time, East Harlem was home to the largest population of Italians in America. Our Lady of Mount Carmel was the heart of it. I first learned about the church when I found some 1940's or 50"s prayer booklets that were my grandmothers. It turns out she used to make a trip from Fort Lee NJ to East Harlem on Our Lady of Mount Carmels' feast day as a way to show thanks for prayers that were answered. So, I started looking for information on this church and visited it when it had an Italian Feast. The interior of the church is beautiful. There are beautiful paintings on the ceiling and behind the altar. The area around the church is not good. The Italians are long gone and theres a lot of vacant stores and a few crackheads roaming around. It does look like there are some newer condos in the area. I read that East Harlem is starting to make a comeback, but it has a ways to go. They still hold an Italian Feast here and the old parishioners return to support the church. They have added the Giglio (2 story statue that is picked up and carried through the streets) to the feast which is a really nice touch. Nice Church to see if you are in the area for the feast or grabbing a slice at Patsy's pizza.

The venue space is somewhat big and offers two functioning microphones which emits good acoustics. The setting is ambient lighting. I love participating in open-mics as a spoken word poet. There is abundant seating church style and the pews are diagonally not traditionally straight to maximize viewing capacity without obstruction. Upon entrance there are abundant pamphlets, flyers and postcards for community local events and upcoming St. John's events.

It really is The Crown Jewel of Hell's Kitchen, built in 1870, it is the oldest and only wood framed building on 42nd St and former home of Father Duffy and Joyce Kilmer of "The Fighting 69th" fame and glory. A very poor perish, (but home to a few actual Louis Comfort Tiffany Studios stained glass windows donated in the late 19th Century) HCRCC is run almost entirely by volunteer laity. Since celebrity priest Fr. Peter Colapietro left the church in 2013, HC has been finding new footing and found new footing, it has. The days of the film, "Fame" being filmed here and the days of seeing Actor Mickey Rourke getting his Ash Wednesday ashes here in a kilt, leather jacket and army boots and the days of the homeless using it for naps are over but a solid faith community has emerged in the 21st Century. In January of 2015 the Requiem Mass for church member and famed entertainer and restauranteur Jean-Claude Baker was held here with the Holy Cross Choir, a visiting gospel choir under the direction of Chapman Roberts, featuring soloists Vivian Reed, and close Baker friend Jessye Norman. Another Yelper "Jeff" complained about being "kicked out" of HC at 6:30 on Christmas without first considering anything or anyone else other than his own hurt feelings, resulting in a one star rating from "Jeff". Being that the enormous church has a paid staff of approximately 4, volunteers have to make time to perform the myriad responsibilities involved in such a challenging daily undertaking as running a large church in the middle of Manhattan. Holy Cross is a Catholic Church honed from the classic liberating, liberal teachings of Christ where we are no longer Romans, nor Greeks, nor Gentiles nor Jews, nor women, nor men...We are One Bread and One Body in Christ Jesus. Dear Jeff, I don't know what "persuasion" you are but it had NOTHING to do with your being asked to leave, ALL ARE WELCOME so the volunteers could clean up, lock up and prepare for the frenetic activities (choir rehearsals, party preparations, multiple masses, decorating, food preparations etc...) on the Christmas schedule which ends at around 2AM on Christmas Eve only to begin again at 7AM on Christmas Day not to mention the security factor in the new age of terror. In the 1960s-1980s, Holy Cross, like many churches used to remain unlocked 24/7 but had to close up between masses due to violent crime, theft, the homeless using HC as a rest room and desecration of The Holy Host. A major character flaw of new-age doxy is the obsession with self and hyper-sensitivity to minor "offenses". The core teaching of all Christendom is the exact opposite, to learn and practice selflessness and tolerance. Holy Cross is one of the most powerful and active food pantries in Manhattan. The Choir is all volunteer under the direction of the supremely gifted Charles Gaston Currin. With a burgeoning Spanish family and the large number of "show biz folk" from nearby Manhattan Plaza, Holy Cross uniquely and organically reflects the best traditions of the communion of every day saints. I was walking by the church just now on west 42nd street and there was a man standing at the top of…read morethe stairs at the door way to the church throwing water from a plastic pitcher into the air down the stairs, reaching and spraying the public sidewalk as myself and another pedestrian were walking by. I called the church office to report and the person who took my call was less than helpful. This is the middle of the day they have people throwing water sloppily. When I told the person he can't throw water down the stairs into the air at the sidewalk with people walking by, he seemed to mock me.

Wellspring offers many classes throughout the year to learn how to read the the Bible, how to do Jesus stuff, Spiritual giftings, etc. The teaching is biblically rooted and worship is amazing! I love my church!!! There is always ministry to keep me…read morebusy. In life we can get bored doing the same routine but @ LFT there is always something new to do to keep us going. The most important thing for me is the word. I am being fed with profound doctrine on Sunday mornings and Tuesday nights. Although they celebrate…read moregregorian style calendar with the rest of the world, when i told the i was orthodox were very welcoming. Even that they were closing, the priest showed me up to the nave, turned on the lights for me and went out to get me change so i could buy a couple of candles. He even stayed and prayed with me before leaving me there alone for as long as i needed. Super nice!
