Just a few blocks east of the Dan Ryan Expy.on 71st street, St Columbanus is easy to access. Parking is a breeze as usually you can park directly in front or in their parking lot on the side. No problems! Historically, this church was founded by Irish immigrants whose lasting presence is seen in the memorial plaque of WWll heroes in the front grounds. Al Capone is said to have donated the money for the exceptionally beautiful stained glass windows and possibly the altar as well. Al Capone along with his mother lived around the block on Prairie Street, in this once Irish neighborhood called Park Manor.' The interior of the church is breathtakingly Gothic architecture that is bright and towering to the heavens above. Aside from the glorious stained glass windows are the deep and very moving Stations of the Cross, that are so beautiful and have survived the test of time. Fabulous statues of religious significance and a baptismal font made from a portion of the altar rail of St. Columbanus. The congregation is full of the Holy Spirit and are beautiful people that will reach out to you and make you feel welcomed and at home. Father Matt is a welcoming priest also and you will like him too. Kevin Morris sings and leads the congregation in song with his beautiful voice. Don't let the 10 O'clock news continue to scare you from uniting with people and visiting this fabulous church with the spirit of God working in our midst. This is a fabulous church! I visited this church as part of Open House Chicago, the Chicago Architecture Center's annual…read moreweekend where they partner with places in the city and nearby suburbs to allow visitors in to wander through their spaces. Pilgrim is a beautiful and historic church. The current church was built in 1889, and while the original part of the church still stands it has been significantly expanded in the century and a half since. It was interesting to learn that the stone (at least some) was quarried in the middle of Chicago; I wouldn't have expected that in the city. What was the original church is now a chapel. The windows in that part of the building are breathtaking. They're also original to the building, and were so perfectly balanced that they open with just a touch and no squeak at all. The sanctuary is built in a stadium seating style which means there are no bad seats anywhere, with clear sight lines to the pulpit. One of the coolest parts of the church is what they call the parlor. They've added a wall that will allow for overflow seating, and when they don't need that space it functions as the nursery school, church offices, and parlor. Overall, the building is beautiful. They have a large parking lot in which they host a farmers market; they also earn money from allowing visitors to downtown Oak Park pay for parking. They added a few years ago an outdoor sculpture of rainbow colored doors, a reaction to the Pulse massacre, to let students at Oak Park River Forest HS down the street know that they are welcome. Although I wouldn't come here for worship, I understand they sometimes have concerts in this church, and I think it would be pretty cool to come to one and hear how it sounds.

The cool thing about the plain is that it still has a nice, mellow flavor. They include a flier about the church on the bag, and it's the most welcoming, all-inclusive church flier I've ever seen. I'm not really a churchy person, but I definitely appreciate it anytime someone sincerely tries to make me feel welcome. They also offer tours!

They are a bit more practical and I often find I can relate them more to my life. Beautiful church with amazing stained glass windows. You can tell a lot of work has gone into preserving the beauty of this church. They also serve meals to the homeless 7 days a week in the morning and are always looking for volunteers.

That said, it has been many years since I have attended any services here, and mostly in the past I have attended weddings, since it is quite beautiful inside and makes for gorgeous pictures. The property surrounding the church on the outside is very well maintained and the sidewalks are all swept and free of debris. It is obvious the caretakers take great pride in keeping it clean and pleasing to the eye. I needed to visit the rectory on this trip and they were most helpful. I was both surprised and glad to see a Polish speaking priest who presided over a wedding that I attended many years ago. Nice to know that some things remain unchanged.

The focus seemed less centered on reverent worship and more on social and political themes. Throughout the homily, the priest repeatedly returned to political topics in a way that felt divisive and distracting from the Gospel. A Catholic Mass should unite people around Christ and the Eucharist, not around political viewpoints. I was also troubled by certain liturgical practices. The congregation was instructed to stand during portions of the Eucharistic Prayer where I would normally expect kneeling, and there seemed to be very little space for silence, reflection, or reverence. The overall experience felt far removed from the sacred and contemplative atmosphere that has traditionally characterized Catholic worship. I fully support welcoming all people into the Church. However, welcome and inclusion should never come at the expense of preserving the sacredness of the liturgy and the centrality of Christ in the Mass. While some may appreciate this style of worship, I personally found it concerning and difficult to reconcile with the reverence and tradition I have experienced in other Catholic parishes. After reading other reviews, I was surprised to find that many of my concerns have been echoed by others. If you are looking for a more traditional, reverent Catholic Mass focused on prayer, silence, the Eucharist, and the timeless teachings of the Church rather than political messaging, this parish may not be the best fit for you.
