The staff and location of this hostel were my favorite part of staying here. There's an underground stop right down the street and it's easy to get around London. It's also walking distance to the brewery part of town. The staff are friendly and accommodating and I had a very positive experience. The hostel itself, as many noted, is very noisy. Despite wearing earplugs, I could hear and feel the vibrations of the music below. The rooms are a tight squeeze. The night we arrived I really needed sleep and it was pretty loud and smoke was coming in through the open window. Closing it made it muggy and hot. The next night I just decided if you can't beat them, join them! And joined the people downstairs. It was fun! Would be hard to stay a long while and don't recommend for light sleepers. read more

Had our early dinner here. Ordered 3 Sunday Roasts: £14 each. chicken, beef, and pork belly. Fixings include roasted potatoes/carrots/turnips, Yorkshire pudding with gravy. Taste was just ok. Beer was ice cold. Service on a (busy) Sunday night was non-existent but accommodating. Sticky toffee, ordered 2, at £5.50 each was sweet and served with a scoop of ice cream. Onion rings at £3.50 were not worth it. read more

This St. Christopher's location tries to be both a bar and a hostel, and doesn't do either job well. First, the bar. It closes at 1:30 AM to accommodate the hostel upstairs. Why would you go to a bar that closes at 1:30? The hostel: please please please do not stay here unless you literally have no other choices! Even the other St. Christopher's down the street is better, and if you want to pay a little more, the Generator hostel also has a great location. It's the worst hostel I've stayed at during three weeks of backpacking through Europe. Many of the rooms face the bar's patio area, which gets super noisy between 11:30 PM and 1:30 AM. Normally this isn't a problem, but at this hostel, the windows all have ventilation holes so you can't close them completely. You're stuck breathing secondhand smoke for two hours if you feel like sleeping early. To make things worse, the bar promises live music at 11 PM every night. Building's wooden frame is great at transmitting sound, so not only will you hear shitty covers of Wonderwall, you'll also feel them through your bed frame! read more

Great location, but everything else is downhill. Almost entirely middle aged men who are not shy about staring and being generally creepy. The bathrooms and showers are gross, and there are no outlets anywhere and no mirrors in the dorms. I was with a group of 2 girls and 1 guy and we left a day early because we felt so uncomfortable. I will say the bar was nice and there were fresh linens and ear plugs on each bed, but overall I would not recommend at all. read more

Tonight I was with a group of 20+ people celebrating a birthday, had such a great time there and enjoyed the music. My friend ordered a drink at one point and when she reached for it, spilled it; and the bartender immediately took the half beer he had been pouring and threw it in her face. We all were in shock and horror and everyone at the bar was a little bit of "what just happened". The manager at the bar immediately removed the bartender from the floor, and then the bouncers showed up and told my friend they needed to talk with her outside. I protested and said she had done nothing wrong and they assured me it was just a quick chat. They took her outside and refused to let her come back in. When I questioned why she wasn't allowed in they told me my questioning was "making it worse" yet no explanation was given. My friend is mixed, and was being given the very societal "angry black woman" treatment to literally being shocked that a white young male bartender had just thrown a drink in her face. I went back inside to ask the manger of the bar what was going on (at this point he'd already taken that bartender into a back room to talk with him, so clearly something was wrong), and asked if something had happened that I hadn't witnessed that led to my friend being held outside in the cold (it's January in london, keep in mind). He told me she had assaulted a bar staff and so they had to remove her, but he hadn't witnessed it. I said I was shocked to hear that as i and others had been present the entire time and hadn't seen anything so asked what happened. He told me she spilled a drink so the bartender "spilled" a drink back on her. I asked "that's what was the assault? That she spilled a drink on the bar?" And he responded "I wasn't there to witness it". I said "everyone at the bar saw your bartender throw a drink on my friend" and he said "I have nothing left to say, I've tried giving you an explanation and you're getting aggressive now". I was literally frustrated, asking at the bar why my friend was being kicked out, given no explanation whatsoever. I said, screw this place, I don't want to support it if this is how you treat people, especially people of color, and went outside. The manager followed me outside and asked the bouncers to remove me, saying "I tried to give her an explanation but she got too aggressive so she has to be removed." I protested that I was given no explanation, and that my friend was also being held outside for no reason and she also wasn't given an explanation for why she had been removed from the establishment. The bouncers refused to let me in, and I stood out in the cold while they stood with their backs to me while I kept asking for my coat so I could just go home. I finally burst out crying because I was in a small tank top in January weather and was freezing and didn't have my phone, coat, wallet, or anything. I begged to have a bouncer just escort me in to get me coat and 10 minutes later they finally complied. This was the most racist ignorant awful experience ever, from both the bouncers and mostly the manager. Had my friend done something wrong, I totally understand (especially having worked in the service industry), yet no one had any reasons for why we were kicked out and immediately labeled us "aggressive" for being upset that your bartender through a drink in my friends face and that we were questioning why we had to stand outside in the cold. For it being 2022, this has been the most disappointing racist ignorant experience ever. I'm honestly disgusted by this treatment. read more

There were quite a few odd types hanging around ( probably explicable by the hostel aspect). I have been there for a lunch after a visit of the borough market , we wanted to seat properly and to eat inside . I had the fish and chips , big portion for an affordable price , tasty and the service was nice and friendly . Nice classic English pub in central London with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. They have a decent selection of beer, ales and hard ciders on tap. The food is actually really good here, carefully prepared and delicious. Had a burger and it was juicy and full of flavor with a side of crispy on the outside, soft in the middle chips. The traditional English breakfast was awesome as well. I would rate this place higher if it wasn't for the fact that the service was like waiting for the cable company to show up at your house. Nearly an hour for our food to arrive and, to make matters worse, my order was wrong! The staff themselves are really sweet, welcoming and courteous but the speed is an issue. Prices aren't too bad though. I can recommend this place only if you're not that hungry and don't mind waiting and waiting for your food. read more

I didn't realize this was also a hostel, this review is only for the bar, which was great. We stopped in for lunch here before heading to the West End for a matinee. They have an excellent beer selection, with choices from all over the world, including Delerium Tremens--an excellent Belgian tripel--on tap! Three of us had sandwiches, and one had the goat cheese salad. All were excellent! It took an inappropriately long amount of time to put together a few sandwiches and a salad and nearly made us late for our show, so keep that in mind if you have a schedule. Otherwise, a great meal, friendly service, and an excellent beer selection. read more

Fantastic live music but a tight squeeze but with the effort to get in. Bar staff is fairly inattentive and rather disinterested in patrons but when they do engage, they get it done. Overall a great live music venue. They have a security team that prefers to start fights rather then keep the peace as we saw them literally assault anyone who dared walk into an open door (they have dedicated in/out doors but they're not marked....these "security" thugs simple yet and grab you if you make an error. read more

Pub and hostel runs good, live music on Sunday at least. Bar and food discounts for hostel stayers. This hostel was AMAZING! It was clean, the staff was helpful and friendly. The rooms were clean and I never had any issues with anything. Pretty cool you could get a discount on food if you were staying at the hostel. Only downfall was there wasn't plugs in the showers? Seemed strange. But, would totally stay here again. I came here a few weeks ago with some friends of friends. I'm new to living South of the river and tend to stick to my old Shoreditch neighbourhood for drinks. But i'm glad i've ventured out of my typical watering holes. I like this bar! There's plenty of room, a very large garden area for the smokers who want to brave the cold! I'll have to come back here heaps during the 2 weeks of summer! The bartenders are very friendly! And its the only place where i've seen dark beer. It was budvar dark and its YUM!!! I think A-Ok describes this place well. This is a hostel for people on a budget but offers the great locations across London. For me the Borough market location was ideal for access to central London whilst I was down here on business but didn't have £100+ / a night to spend on what essentially was a place to sleep for the night. There were a few niggles such as incredibly hot rooms followed by freezing cold showers but nothing life changing or enough to enrage me into leaving. The reason I'm not awarding more stars is because I didn't find the staff particularly friendly. It took ages to check in because the desk staff were chatting to each other and I felt like a bit of an inconvenience. But I'm more bothered by that because I work in a job dealing with the public so I'm more of a fuss pot about customer service. But the rooms are clean and there are lockable storage container under the bunks. TOP TIP: bring your own padlock, as the hostel do not provide them / sell them. The canny corner shop next door however will sell you one for £6.90 (yes £6.90 - there are no typos in this review!) and add £1 if you pay by card.... I nearly wept. Anyway it's a good feature of the rooms, padlock issue aside. Ooh and there is free wifi which is a big thumbs up from me. All in all, not a majorly traumatising experience and I would recommend staying here if you're wanting a cheap and relatively central location for your London trip! read more

We stayed four nights at this location and the experience was terrible. Firstly, the check-in process was long and fumbling. The guy at the desk mis-calculated our booking total twice and my husband had to correct him. On the third try, he ended up just paying that amount because it was *close* to what the cost was supposed to be, based on our reservation. We booked a private room, which we EXPECTED to be small and contain bunk beds, and we EXPECTED the communal bathrooms - so none of that was a problem. We're not stupid and know we booked a room in a hostel, not a hotel. However, the room was dirty - like, hasn't been mopped or dusted in MONTHS dirty. You could actually see the thick layer of dust under the beds where the luggage cages were. (The linens were clean, thankfully) There was a mouse trap in the corner of the room, which was kind of sketchy. There was a small tube TV that didn't work, as well as a small fan (caked in dust) that also didn't work. No A/C, which is fine, but the window (no screen) would only open about 5 inches and needed to be propped open with a book. There are several water closets (just a toilet & sink for you Americans) and on our floor there was a larger bathroom with three shower stalls and a toilet. The toilets & shower stalls themselves were clean, however the ceilings and upper walls had lots of pink & black mold (not claiming it was the deadly kind of black mold, just dark mold) and peeling paint. The soap dispensers in each of the shower stalls was SO caked in algae-like green mold that the soap actually smelled putrid. Obviously there's no housekeeping, but there is a lady who comes to the rooms daily to empty the trash cans. Our first morning she basically barged in and we had to tell her to come back from inside while in our underwear. The most frighting thing was that one day after we spent a whole day out we arrived to find our room door ajar - when we know for certain that we shut it firmly when we left that morning. Thankfully we carried our valuables & passports with us, and all our stuff was still there when we returned. The cherry on the sundae is the pub below. If you're lucky enough to get a room with a window that overlooks the corridor outside the pub, which we were, then you can basically PLAN on horrendously loud drunken people bellowing until 2am. If you're staying here on the weekend, there's live music inside which will rattle your bones on top of the loud people outside. If you literally have nowhere else to say, then this is better than nothing, and FAR cheaper than the hotels (which is why we chose to stay here). However, I simply can't recommend this location. It was pretty gross. read more

Really impressive beer selection and tasty food! I didn't stay here, we popped in here for Sunday lunch. Greeted by the friendly bar staff, the bar itself is down to earth, with an old world feel. None of this silly gastro-pub stuff, this is a well worn established venue, that's worn around the edges. After choosing the lamb Sunday lunch and rump steak, we were greeted with two large plates of well cooked, tasty food. The steak was cooked perfectly, came with a fields worth of skin on chunky chips and roasted vine tomatoes on the side. The lamb was tender, came with lots of veg, and lashings of gravy. I was a little disappointed with the Yorkshire which hadn't risen, and that I only received two roast potatoes, but they were delicious non-the-less, and you could tell the plates contents were home cooked and not one of those microwaved let downs! The chocolate nemisus pudding is also a must if you have a sweet tooth, although I would highly recommend sharing, because it is very, very rich! Altogether a great meal, that is filling and worth a visit. read more

Waitress had to think about whether they could serve coffee at lunch time (!!) and refused to honour the Sunday roast special advertised on the board as it was a "mistake that needed fixing". Should have told us this earlier. After much fuss, the manager finally agreed to honour the price and time stated on the wall directly behind us. This is a great place for anyone, traveling alone or in a big group, because it's full of young people. This is a cozy spot. Stopped in here for lunch on a day that it started to sleet and snow at the end of April. It's much bigger than it looks from the outside - long and thin with rooms in the back. It's actually part of an old very historic inn where people used to catch the stage coach to Dover - so, it has that truly old, authentic pub feel you'd expect. I sat at the bar to watch the constantly changing weather. Had the fried salmon and roasted veggies for 13 quid - it was very good, as was the service. They have a long list of international beers - so, eating.is optional. Crowd was a few tourists mixed with local workers stopping in for an afternoon pint or bite to eat. read more

Pub - does what it says on the tin. It's got a pool table, it's really wooden & brass, its a bit grubby, it's got pub grub, it's got a couple of decent sized screens and a small TV, and it's one of the few pubs around Borough that you can watch the footy in without it being impossible to see the screen. Usually has a pretty friendly atmosphere and the beer is ok priced for central London - though I'd swerve some of the continental lager pumps, as there seems to have been some insanity on the pricing. Weirdly, it has a downstairs which is totally different. Lots of plush sofas and table service while we were watching the Champions league. That bit is not always open though. read more

St. Christorpher's Inn recently had a bit of a renovation, which has really improved décor of the place, although in my opinion it doesn't really have much character. The pool table is gone, and they seem to be focusing much more on food and gourmet beers. They play music, but it's not too loud so is a good place to go if you want a conversation. The pub consists of a ground floor, with a large TV at the front showing sports. Towards the back is a large seating area were most people go to eat at lunch or dinner. In the basement it has a slightly plusher décor, with leather sofas and mood lighting. When I've been here in the evening though there rarely seems to be anyone down in the basement. They also put tables out on the side access road on the right hand side of the pub so you can sit outside and have a drink during the summer months - although it's not the most attractive area. It is also a hostel, but I've not used it so can't comment on what it's like. The menu consists of platters to share, sandwiches, soup, very filling burgers, grilled steaks, and a large range of other mains. The drinks menu includes 5 hand pulled real ales, 7 ciders and porters, about 15 types of wine, plus 30 bottled beers from around the world. On my last visit it took a while for the food to arrive, but the staff apologised and gave me friend a free drink. read more

Not since Ted Danson flirted with Dianne Chambers in Cheers has barman seemed a desirable vocation. I can see why. Catering to the endless supply of drunks, sociopaths and media professionals that litter the bars of central London must be a particularly dispiriting way to spend an evening when, frankly, you could be on the other side of the bar. This may explain why good barmen - apologies, bartenders of either gender - are so hard to find. When was the last time you raised your eyes above the level of the bar to be met by anything other than slack-jawed indifference and a heartily welcoming "Uh?". When you do find one... one that somehow manages to perform that oh-so-difficult feat of, oh, I don't know, remembering roughly in which order the waiting patrons might have turned up at the bar, or managing to project an aura of anything other than casual hostility, you treasure them. Such a one seems to exist in the St Christopher: a jolly Kiwi who actually makes you feel welcome. Astonishing. Go now, before he saves enough to go off inter-railing. Other than that, the pub's not bad. Quiet in spite of its busy location on the slightly grubbier side of the City, with the excellent Budvar Black on draught, and with a strapping extended rear section that means you should be able to park your own rear section at any time bar the brutal Friday rush. On my last night of being here for a week and I have got to say it was a blast. I was in the room with 20something people and didn't have any problems. I will say the bed was uncomfortable, and the guy that was above me for 2 days snored really loud, but it's a hostel so it is what it is. The bar down stairs was always a good time, and you get discounts on beer/food for staying in the hostel. They did free drinks most nights on the chill out balcony. Major shout out to Billy! He was an awesome host and I had one of the best nights here because of him! Will definitely be staying in other St. Christopher's as i travel the world! read more

I have been here a number of times for RPG meet ups and have used the basement function room which works well given the layout. I prefer it there as I find the main bar area gets too noisy for me though it's still a pleasant space. I have various food intolerances and did wish they could be a bit more flexible on food options but that being said, the food is pretty good if on the expensive side. Thankfully the ale of the day is very budget friendly at around £2.80 a pint and they always seem to select something worth drinking. There is also a very global selection of beverages with types you don't usually see. read more

Stayed here for 3 nights on our first leg of a Eurotrip. Showers were super clean with warm water, and our rooms & sheets were tidy. No hygiene or safety issues at all. The daytime staff were always great to us and gave us impeccable service at both the receptionist desk and the bar! The nighttime bar staff, however, were awful enough for me to bring the review to 2 stars. As paying guests staying in the Inn and not just visiting the bar, I definitely expect a level of customer service that was not given in the slightest. The St Christopher's Village (which is less than a block away, maybe a 90 second walk down the road) was a way better, more laid back environment and I would definitely stay there next time! read more

I've only been here for drinks, and it's a great basic place for some post-work pints. The bars around Borough are notoriously crowded in the early evenings, and my boyfriend and I decided to pop in for a pre-dinner drink. I was pleased by the lack of city-boys in suits -- it was instead filled with a few tourists, what looked like a few people staying in hostel part, and locals passing through after work or before going elsewhere for dinner. Thankfully music was playing at a decent decibel; I abhor really loud music in pubs where you need to shout to be heard. We enjoyed listening to a good mix of alterna-type hits while chatting away to decide on our next venue. Nevermind, we stayed for another drink! A number of beers and ales are on offer, and despite the crowd we were served fairly quickly. I'll be back for more. read more

When clubs get too horny or pubs get too boring for us, this is the place we always come to. Absolutely love their live music performances every weekend (sometimes on Wednesday and Thursday too). St Christopher's Inn takes its name from the patron saint of travellers, as such it provides a warm welcome for backpackers and travellers from around the globe. Located on Borough High Street it is probably the cheapest place to get a good beer in the London Bridge area. The staff is welcoming and the atmosphere is fitting for a travellers bar. All in all, it's a good place for a quick pint. read more
