The beers were really good, those from their own brewery (including a green coloured ale) and the guests. The food is worth recommending too we managed to eat here once in the evening, as well as devouring a couple of breakfasts (you can actually get a beer with breakfast if you are man mad enough) 6 rooms, watch out for the haunted toilet in room 3!

There's a great selection of beers brewed at the on-site Crown micro-brewery (including stout) and there are also some 'proper' Continental lagers on tap. The main drinking area is plainly furnished with lots of bare wood and the conservatory at the rear is a winner with great views along the Don Valley. Staff are pleasant and knowledgeable and there's also food and B&B accommodation, although we haven't tried either of these so can't comment on them.

However, over the last six months or so there has been a massive change, with a lot of local residents choosing to avoid this establishment. The landlord is more concerned with profits, than the well being of local residents and customers, maybe he should stick to barbering than running a pub. He lets in a lot of customers who are barred from other local pubs in the village, unconcerned about the trouble they may cause. He also turns a blind eye to the obvious drug dealing/taking in these premises. The last few times I have been in this pub, there has been fights breaking out, with no door staff on to intervene. Only this Friday as one fight erupted at the rear, other fights started to break out, resulting in one person being randomly head butted and knocked out completely. The only person who seemed to do anything about it was the barman, Gregg, who stopped the fight. As a concerned resident of Gee Cross village, I will no longer be drinking in here, and will also be making complaints to licensing authorities. I would like to point out that this in no way is a review of the restaurant, which has always been superb, but this is a review of the bar.

The grapes is a very beautiful old building with a lot of original features intact like the stained glass windows and the fireplaces. We only nipped in so didn't get the chance to stick around for the fodder but the menu consisted of some great classic British dishes and really seems to be aimed at a good mixture of locals and visitors. There's no food served on Mondays though and most places seem to shut down in this neck of the woods on a Monday (quite a few on Tues too) so make sure you have a back up plan! Some seating upstairs and quite a cavernous traditional, heavy on the wood setting inside - check it out!

The snug is a lovely room with it own bar, which can have the doors shut off from the sports room so it retains a quiet atmosphere. There are 2 entrances, one direct into the snug and one into the resturant so depending on what kind of night out you are having, you can choose whic door to use. The landlady is very welcoming, and the refurb has definitely given this place a whole new lease of life

Although i've never tried to food since it was refurbished i've only heard good reviews about it. There are jazz nights each week, as well as a quiz night and othermusic nights. The large room towards the back has the tvs for sport, and also the pool table, but again this can be closed off from the snug so that its a quieter room to sit and relax. Good choice of real ales, and the glasses are always clean, Staff are courteous and polite, and dogs are welcome in the pub area. The outside play area is fenced off from the car park and is connected to courtyard area wirth the picnic benche making it a safe place for parents to have a break while the little ones tear about in the playground!

I ordered a bbq burger with cheese and bacon and my friend had the breakfast burger. big meaty portions, burgers were delicious and the hand made chips were great if not a little thick. although the pub itself seemed only moderately busy, the bar staff were pretty slow at clearing tables and glasses - but the staff were very pleasant to talk to and service was fast and friendly. will be eating here again very soon!

The beer is supplied by the famous independent Stockport Brewery, Robinsons, you will also find seasonal brews! Being in Stockport, a 10 minute train journey from Manchester Piccadilly and 5 minutes walk from the station, it's a favourite amongst locals and commuters alike who take advantage of the sprawling bars, low prices and an atmosphere akin to 80's sitcom Cheers. As much as I'm not a barfly on the grand scale of Norm or Cliff, it really does seem to be a place where everybody knows your name and with a friendly and no nonsense approach from the bar staff, The Magnet is a pub where the local rockers and Goths (who circulate near the pool table and kick ass jukebox) rub shoulders with the blue-rinse brigade and the football supporting workman enjoys a laugh with the ale loving hipster. Special mention needs to go to their incredible range of beers, with around 20 on tap at all time (local, UK craft and speciality international) and a bottle fridge that just screams "drink me".
