Served with chips still, it was a fairly normal sized pie, and just the job. (Imagine how big the normal pie is? :O ) I ate with someone who had nachos for one, and as the portion size was fairly big I got to steal a few as well. Really is nice with all this great we're having to sit out in the sun at lunch, and have a proper break. I'm happy that I only live a couple of minutes away. Food came really quickly even though there was 7 of us. Scampi was of course great as all breadcumbed and deep fried things are. The chips were also really nice, fresh and crispy. Other people's food looked good too - the hiker's special involves a Cumberland sausage and a pasty, obviously. The vegetarian option also sounded appealing - red onion, leek and goats cheese. It's obviously not gourmet but it's very decent pub food and ideal if you've been hiking in the area.

I actually saw something similar to this when I was in the Lowry Hotel few months ago. (Someone had a burger and it came in a wooden crate/box). The scampi tasted good but could have done with more, chips were tasty. Peas were OK but it also came with a bit of salad too. Overall decent pub food and perfect after walking.

There is a fair-sized car park, guarded by a large owl and a bear, both carved from huge tree stumps. The pub itself looks as though it has been completely refurbished, with taste, a few days ago and it is friendly and welcoming. The drinks selection is superb with all the usual national brands and at least five quality real ales on offer. The food menu seems a little expensive until you see what is actually being served - we were lucky enough to sample complementary sandwiches and the best chips I have ever tasted. Those eating their main meals seemed more than happy with them and I was even tempted to order something even though it was only a couple of hours since having my main meal of the day at home! There are children's and pensioners' menus advertised and a Sunday Carvery. We will be back, with the family next time!

During our visit we ate in the restaurant several times. The Fish n Chips were fabulous, very tasty and not greasy. The Toad in the Hole was another favorite and a new experience for this American. The Sunday Roast was second to none. The owners, Diane and Phil, are very hands on with their business and are delightful to speak with. When we are back in the area, I know where we will be staying.

Situated just across the road from Mersey square and tucked in behind one of the main railway arches, it's a hidden gem that is perfect for starting the night before heading up to the Magnet and Hope on the A6. I didn't make it in to it but my friends I was meeting were in the beer garden out back beforehand which is a nice additional touch. The interior is comfortably furnished with a mixture of chairs and sofas to give a relaxed atmosphere. If you were looking for a traditional country pub though it's probably more on the stylish gastro end of the spectrum. That said, the food we had from starters to desserts was superb. Our group, which included a baby and a toddler, were well taken care of and we had a large table tucked away from the main dining area where we could spread out a bit. You can't travel light with young 'uns! Sunday roasts and British dishes head the menu, though the selection for all courses was pretty extensive - I opted for their oak-smoked chicken liver pâté followed by the Sunday roast platter (roast beef, roast turkey and loin of pork) and then sticky toffee and apple pudding (because dessert). Their bar stock includes cask-conditioned beers, real ales and bottles which was good to see. As a designated driver though, I was on the blackcurrant and lemonade! Service was attentive throughout and we were never made to feel rushed at any point. A super venue for a lazy Sunday lunch - will definitely return.
