I have never felt so many warm and loving people in a church body. Yes it's a large church- you must get involved in a group study to begin to feel a part of the "church body". But even if you don't get involved- God is in this place. We had to move to another state and visited many churches in the past 8 years. I have moved back now and am thankful for all of the pastors at FBA and for a loving body of believers. No one is perfect- that's why we need Jesus- but you are loved and accepted at FBA just the way you are.

Leading a congregation without an opinion is unrealistic, so this isn't a bad thing. Nothing here is remotely comparable to the intense racial, socioeconomic, or political narratives pushed in many predominantly Black churches in the Atlanta metro area. They are conservatives at First Baptist Atlanta, take it or leave it. The Experience: Friendly and accommodating. It features blue screens, spotlights, and a lecture style. They don't use screens and lighting the way Gen Z churches do--don't expect flashing lights or vibrant backgrounds.* Congregation: Very mindful, very demure. Think: "I'll take my tea in the sunroom." * Dress Code: Modest and reserved. Sundresses for women, suits for men.* Demographics: 80% Caucasian, 10% Asian, 7% people of color, 3% other.* Socioeconomic: ~80% upper 1% to upper-middle class.* Optics: Beautiful, large, well-landscaped campus. No one actually sits by the fountain; it is strictly for decoration. * Parking: Plenty of parking with extremely smooth exiting. Very impressive for a church this size. *Tip: The campus is huge, so keep a pair of flats handy if you wear heels.*Worship Experience: Fabulous orchestra and solid choir. However, the same four praise team members sing all the songs. The musical style is traditional, CCM, country, bluegrass, and purist. The Pastor has noted, "If you want to hear something different, listen to it in your car." It felt culturally insensitive and laced with an unsettling undertone, likely indicating a resistance to needed change. Leadership & Staff: Institutionalized monoculture and homosocial reproduction. Baby boomers make up over 80% of the demographic. Millennials are rising but lack representation and mostly end up leaving. Family & Children: Children and college students are separated into their own ministries away from the general congregation. You rarely see them outside of designated "Family Night" outings. It feels like a 55+ community where you never see the kids or parents. I have never seen a single child held by a parent during the main service.Pastor: Friendly, patient, and a good listener (or a great actor). He is feisty from the pulpit with sound Biblical teaching, though leadership limitations and a lack of authority are noticeable at times.Areas of Concern: All groups with clergy of color are placed in low-visibility areas. Sunday ministers, guests, and performers are never people of color. Furthermore, it seems no one outside of fellow Mississippians gets new staff positions, which is puzzling given Mississippi's reputation regarding racial disparity. The same three "favorites" always stand in for the pastor. Why is there no rotation among so many qualified individuals? "Rick" (the guy always walking around with his blonde wife) can really preach, and Donna is the chef's kiss! Atlanta is full of gifted, anointed people from all walks of life. If heaven looks like all of us, why doesn't it look and sound like that here? Dr. Stanley found a way to balance diversity in this congregation. It is unclear how or why that came undone, but comparing old videos of the congregation to now is very telling.

I have continued to follow and listen to their Sunday services since moving from GA 3 years ago. I truly respected the staff and held this church in high regard, recommending to all of my friends who still live in Georgia. Recently my son was diagnosed with cancer. I called and left a voicemail sobbing on June 12 asking to have the pastor call me to pray for my son (or obviously ANYONE from the church who cared enough to call me). To date, I haven't received a call back over a week later. You should be ashamed of yourselves. I came to you in a moment of need for prayers for my son and no one cared enough to call. I reached out to someone via Facebook who works at the church as well and still received no call/email/contact at all. I will never again speak highly of this church and I am saddened that I wasted years of my life supporting a FAKE organization. Shame on all of you. Go elsewhere to a church who actually cares about their members, whether past or present.

I think the church…read moreis like a parachurch/conference facility/prayer room for those who have membership elsewhere. And it's probably great for that. You can get on their mailing list for upcoming conferences. But while actually attending there on Sundays (about 3-4 in a row), my experience wasn't great. In fairness, it was during the summer, when attendance is low due to people on vacation. Jackie Tyre, the prophet/pastor, was there only there about half the time. Visiting "prophets" came in to speak to us while she was gone. One particular "prophet" was very full of himself and talked about all that God had done for him, like getting him a beautiful wife (after his first died) and a nice house and car. These were apparently gifts from generous supporters. He made his new wife come up and raved about how gorgeous she was compared to how ugly he was (typical husband-to-fellow-men verbiage, but she really was attractive). She seemed fairly mortified to be in the spotlight like that. The congregation was mostly older ladies , alone, in their late 60s and early 70s (and a few families of various age), but raving about his beautiful new wife to a crowd with mostly widows and divorced women seemed to lack situational awareness. There was no spiritual tie in such as, "Maybe you feel overlooked by the world, but God adores you much more than I adore her," which would have been an easy way to encourage us all, even if we've been abandoned by a spouse (I haven't) or feel overlooked (most of us do at times). There was no ministry time. He and his wife disappeared immediately after the service and were only available in another room where they were selling their books. While I made an effort to connect with the congregation, I didn't find them very friendly. This is very typical in Atlanta metro, but still worth mentioning. Someone later told me attendance is better when bigger name prophets (like Dutch Sheets) visit. I should note, the room is huge and laid out so that it's very long (not wide and welcoming). The congregation on Sundays only filled about 1/6 of the space. Maybe people were skipping because they knew Jackie was out and random "prophets" like this self-focused guy were coming. I've also been told (after giving up on the church) that people are more friendly on ministry training night (Tuesday, I think).

Reverend Dr. Dwight Andrews does a masterful job providing a worship experience which is spiritually and intellectually challenging, but also conveys pastoral assurance and confidence in the certainty of God's love for all. Music ministries are outstanding: firmly steeped in "the Congregational Way" -- with a "jazzy" twist for fun! First Church is a UCC congregation which is unabashedly trinitarian and respects the primacy of the individual conscience on sociopolitical concerns. Best of all, while First Church is home to many "movers and shakers" -- all worship side-by-side with people of different backgrounds and circumstances. Liberal churches often project a "cerebral coolness". Well, you won't find that at all at First Church! Rather, you'll soon be surrounded with warm spirits, caring hearts, and open minds -- and much laughter and fellowship along the way!
