It replaced the Old Courthouse as the city's main judicial center and remains a defining feature of the downtown skyline. Designed by the architectural firm Klipstein & Rathmann, the Civil Courts Building rises 386 feet across 13 floors. Its most distinctive feature is the stepped pyramid roof. The roof is made of cast aluminum and topped with two 12-foot sphinx-like sculptures bearing the fleur-de-lis of St. Louis on their chests. Out front, you'll find 32 Ionic columns, each carved from Indiana limestone and standing about 42 feet high. They give the place a solid, classical feel. Inside, the building houses courtrooms and a law library, and it has served as the home of the 22nd Judicial Circuit Court of Missouri. Its placement directly behind the Old Courthouse and in line with the Gateway Arch makes it a central visual anchor in downtown. It's basically a civic temple built from limestone and big ideas, where justice climbs thirteen stories into the sky. A monument to St. Louis's love of order and beauty, it's topped with aluminum sphinxes that quietly keep watch over the city below. The building is not open on the weekends but the grounds are open. There are a number of monuments worth checking out including the Freedom Suits and Police Memorials. [Review 1174 of 2025 - 440 in Missouri - 24727 overall]

If you're here for jury duty, be sure to be squeezed in with 200 people in the morning so you can get separated to go to several cases divided up so they can get jurors or pre-filtered jurors. Friendliness: They are overall friendly staff but can be a bit dramatic and there's always 1 that makes a scene. Obviously no one wants to be there. Entertainment: Feel free to bring a book or work laptop so you won't bend your neck like a dinosaur obsessing over your phone for hours. Parking: There is supposedly reimbursement for an area for jurors for parking. Call ahead and get guidance. Again the staff are very friendly and they are quick to answer. They will also have patience to listen. They are human. Don't make everyone's day worst if you're having a bad day.

I called today to ask for an update only to welcomed with an attitude. Whoever is in charge need to have periodical training on customer service because they act like you are asking them to do something outside of their job scope. This is unbelievable from people who main purpose is to provide customer support! Appalling. UPDATE as of June 2024: I am extremely dissatisfied with the Judge handling of my case. As a father concerned about my children's safety, I filed a motion to have our parental agreement changed because my ex violated it multiple times. Most alarmingly, she failed to inform me that she was dating someone convicted of molesting his stepdaughter, who is under a protective order until the 2030s. This is the second sex offender she has brought around our minor children. In January 2024, I e-filed an "emergency" motion and received a court hearing date for April. My ex was served through the e-file system. I also submitted over 20 pages of evidence to substantiate my case. In April 2024, I appeared in court with my attorney, but my ex did not appear, despite being properly served. I received an order to appear "in person" for a hearing in June, even though I marked the documents as an emergency. In June 2024, I again appeared in court with my attorney, and once again, my ex did not appear, ignoring the court' for a second time. Had this been a male defendant, the repercussions would likely have been more severe. Instead of addressing the emergency, the Judge set a hearing for case management in August 2024. It is clear that Judge (I can't say her name due to ongoing litigation) did not read the evidence thoroughly, ignored significant safety concerns I had regarding a convicted sex offender around my children, and her demeanor walking in the court room was not hopeful; as if she didn't feel like hearing my case. The handling of this case has been deeply disappointing from the start and hopeless. I'm dropping this case due to the bias and prejudice of this court. I have absolutely no faith in this court or the Judge to make any reasonable judgement. If anything happens to my children, it's on the Judge and my ex-wife. No man should have to present a year long case just to get a judge to take time, review the evidence, and make a temporary decision based on the evidence in their face. Absolutely appalling.

And so I made the turn to check it out. Completed in 1848, the courthouse is in the Southern Greek Revival style and the view from the porch of the famous Thebes Bridge (reviewed separately) and the Mighty Mississippi River (also reviewed separately) is tremendous. Inside, this classic structure are two hundred years of history, artifacts, photographs and some very helpful and friendly ladies who are more than happy to talk. Abraham Lincoln visited the courthouse when he was a frontier lawyer. One of the more infamous Supreme Court cases began its journey here when fugitive slave Dred Scott was imprisoned in the courthouse dungeon. Yeah, that Dred Scott and the ruling from SCOTUS in 1857 was that the US Constitution did not extend American citizenship to people of black African descent. This was thankfully overturned by the Civil War and the Fourteenth Amendment. [Review 1247 of 2024 - 201 in Illinois - 22270 overall]

Sitting high atop a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River in Thebes, Illinois is the 1848 Courthouse. Standing 165 years, it is a testament to architect Henry Ernst Barkhausen, who was awarded the contract for designing and supervising the erection of the Thebes Courthouse in 1845. This landmark was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

The ambiance of the waiting area is not plush, but you don't need to worry about the decor, you will not be there long. The most important thing to remember about Jury Duty, is to listen. The staff moves things along, very quickly and if they have to repeat themselves, that is when they get gruff. Otherwise, it is rather painless. I brought magazines and both of my iPads, in preparation of a long wait. My start day was Wednesday, not the typical Monday so the selection pool wasn't as large. My number was called in the second group, so no time to play on iPad or read any magazine articles, because once you are in the courtroom all those items are taboo. Once the Voir dire (jury selection) starts, that is when the real entertainment begins. My jury pool was 48 city residents and each and every one of them had some type of story. Some had more then one story, to share with the judge and lawyer. The selection process took close to a full 7 hours. During that time we did get a lunch break, of just over an hour. However, it made for a long day 8 AM - 5:30 PM. I've served on one criminal, two civil (one as foreman) and one grand jury. I guess I had too much experience, because this time I was not selected to serve.
