FIVE STARS for Sun & Stars Montessori School!…read more I recently met Ms. Tammy Harbison, Executive Director at the Sun and Stars Montessori School. She had a vendor booth at the St. Helena farmer's market and had set up a little display for children to play musical instruments. We spoke about the school's approach to exposing children to learning and exploring. Sun & Stars is a non-profit, non-denominational, privately owned and operated school. The curriculum is based on the teaching's of Maria Montessori and is guided by student interest. Learning is self-directed through choice, independence, and hands-on experiences. While children found and played with the 10+ musical instruments in her booth, she encouraged them to explore and experiment with different mediums and sounds. NICE! She even gave pointers on how to facilitate exploration of music at home - sticks on ice cube containers, drums out of containers, etc. Tammy gave many of the children attending the farmer's market a FREE ribbon stick (a 1.5' stick with three multi-colored ribbons) and encouraged them to just "Have Fun!". Truly, she is a professional who is more interested in properly facilitating childrens' learning processes, than to make a buck (which also would be nice). What a great business! I'm impressed with the executives of this school!

I am constantly bragging to everyone about how much we love her school and how much her teachers love her. (I am learning that this isn't everyone's experience and realizing just how lucky we are.) My daughter, at 3 years old, was able to write the entire alphabet, sound it out, and write all of her numbers within three months of going to Mila's - something we hadn't reviewed at home! Their curriculum is fantastic, and their approach to managing the kids is kind and respectful, while also being structured. She has never been able to nap without snuggling me, nursing, or in the car: she naps every day at school and now knows how to put herself down for a nap. They are really helpful with accidents and potty training so don't be afraid! They play in this really cool play structure in the back, they have fun field trips to the PD and FD. They do performances! We were invited to a Christmas celebration potluck where the kids performed English and Spanish songs and it was so sweet! They make some really cute art every day. They celebrate each other's birthdays. It is truly the sweetest little school. I've NEVER had a problem with my little girl not wanting to go to school because she has so much fun every day. The communication is incredible. They have a really great app where you can message the teachers throughout the day, they share photos, and check the kids in and out. They have a good system and are really organized. They speak Spanish to the kids, which is great. (I wish they only spoke in Spanish to help the kids become bilingual!) The teacher Liliana is incredible and my daughter LOVES her. We all do. Mila is also SO kind! We love all of the helpers as well! If you're looking around and not sure where to go- rest assured that your little one will have a great experience here. I want to skip TK this year so that she can continue to go to Mila's - that's how good it is!

Children are introduced to sounds and words of the French language through song, nursery rhymes, stories and general everyday interactions. As children are exceptional language learners by nature, this total immersion environment enables them to quickly become familiar with French and begin to know how to use it for themselves. Our days here at preschool are rooted in the idea that a child learns through play and exploration! We lead children each day through a fun variety of arts and crafts, story time, classical dance (ballet), cooking, science actives, music, outdoor and free play time. These experiences are guided completely in French to familiarize children with numbers, letters, colors, shapes, and other early vocabulary. We recognize that each child has unique talents, learning style and personality. LPJ is committed to ensure optimal social, emotional and linguistic growth. They…read moreare like a private school where they have small classes and amazing teachers, as well as the principal and Mrs. Sonia in the office, they are the cherry on top. I've asked the new parents what made them join us at YES and they reported that "in addition to all the amazing benefits of the school [they] joined because of the principal and the staff. They really are one-of-a-kind. They work with each child one-on-one, which really helped my son who can be a handful at times. My daughter came in reading at grade level and by the time she finished she was reading at college level and reading Charles dickens!!!! She even enjoyed reading, I don't know what the school did but they goodness for them. The school utilizes project-based learning just like new tech hiand they provide one on one coaching to the kids so that each kid reaches their highest potential. What I love most about the school is the parent involvement. We've got to several schools and been a part of many PTAs our last school had almost 500 kids in it and the state threatened to shut down the PTA because we only had three volunteers. The school has like 50% involvement rate! End it isn't a requirement to help out it's just happens to be such a cool environment that people naturally chip in and help out. This is also the only school that I have ever been to where the principal helps out as much as she does. She and Sonia, the office admin are the heart of the school. They know everything that's going on and they are happy to help. The other schools we have been to the secretaries are too busy that don't involve themselves in the schools activities. It really makes a difference that anytime I have a question I can go to the office and they help me find the answer. They are also at every school event, supporting everything that we do. The school is like a family! Even the PTA has called family club. You should check it out! Even if you live in Napa you're able to go to this awesome school with open enrollment.
