I went to this school at the end of the Seventies and graduated in 1980. I made many friends. I…read morewould say it was better than other schools nearby at the time I went there for academics but also because of the unique landscape and architecture that was destroyed in a teardown and rebuild project which came ten years after I graduated. We had a domed arena that was in the style of Finnish architect Ero Saarinen and was great to play sports in. The principal was pretty good: Dr. Jerome Marco-he served a long time and had the current Football field named after him. He didn't like underage drinking so he got rid of the Rugby team which was a club sport-not varsity. That team became the Maryland Exiles thanks to Dan Soso who kept it going. I did academics with great teachers like Bari Bergman for English, Speech and Drama but sports was really what I was into at the time. We had arguably the best football team in the history of the school. I played each season. We were not undefeated in the regular season but 9-1 then lost the state AA Championship-our QB got injured in the semifinal. The 2003 team went 10-0 but lost their first playoff game that makes us better in my opinion. Our coach, Rich Cameron was good. He had us in the wishbone offense that just could not be stopped. Our rugby team won tournaments-the coach was John Haberman. I also wrestled. That was more fun than anything. Many of the students have gone on to great careers and spread out across the country nowadays. We had great colors and a great mascot but I do not agree with the gender equity changes made to our mascot. Our Colors were Black, White and Columbia Blue. We were the Vikings and we had a great Viking but nowadays any depiction of our Viking must be accompanied by a Lady Viking. I went to our reunion and saw Lady Viking drawings which we did not have. If you want to have Lady Viking Drawings in 2013 O.K. but we did not have them in 1980 so don't go back and try to re-write history. Cafeteria food was good. We even had a salad bar which I used in wrestling season. We always had a weight room open after school. Other notable teachers were Mr. Cleary-English and Yearbook, Jack Freeman-JV Football and Al Patini-Driver's Education, Mr. Peters and Mr. Debone-gym, Hugh Hammet-Tennis Coach, Ms. Linda Niedbalski and Melanie Sorg-Biology, Mrs. Trebor-Home Economics, Ms. Guiterrez-English, Ms. Cummings-English. Some great teachers have names I forgot-sorry. This was a high school you would want to go to. 4 stars.

I love this place for being my chrysalis at a time when D.C. was the murder capital of the world and my life and my academic advancement felt so precarious. Carroll saved me by providing loving guidance in my journey to walk with God and academically over preparing me for college and law school. Generations of my family have graced the halls at great financial sacrifice for our working class parents and grandparents. I found God and myself at Carroll. I made lifelong friends and fantastic memories that lift me up when I feel down. I still get goosebumps when I walk onto that football field just like I did when I strapped up that gold helmet in high school. I owe Carroll much more than I could ever hope to repay. Carroll students reflect the light of Jesus Christ in all of their undertakings. Founded in 1951, Carroll was one of the first racially integrated schools in D.C. to defy the de facto racial segregation that was the law of the land in those pre Brown v. Board days in America. Did a college tour with my Daughter,wife and the one who is choosing where he will continue his…read moreeducation my grandson. The campus is huge 1,347 acres and I felt like I walked every inch. It is an impressive campus with a diverse community of students and faculty. Our campus guide was a sophomore,she was an adequate enough guide. We were able to see the Terps baseball team practicing and getting ready for next season. This is a Division 1 (D1) school, the top echelon of school sports. The football stadium ranks up there with a few NFL stadiums. The stadium seats 46,185 and if you're into college football you know that doesn't include standing room. As we traveled from building to building there were so many students encounters going about their daily routines, students in classes, students studying in lounge areas students lifting weights, students working out and students just relaxing in the lawn. Once again I was impressed with the 8 libraries on campus. The school is in the process a building new dorm buildings and the few they have already finished look very impressive. Now the older ones not so much. A lot of the older ones had window ac's and again a lot didn't. This tour was very informative and my grandson was impressed however he's still weighing his options. He had already toured 2 other universities. Also the ride from NY to College park Md. is 4 1/2 hours so not too bad of a drive.

I looked forward to being around people who enjoyed teaching English, and meeting students from all around the world. If I ever came across a family member or friend who needed English support, I would definitely send them here as well. From a volunteer perspective, the Center provides so much support and training for its teachers (who do not need to be professional teachers, so this helps), including a ready-made curriculum and textbooks. Though I've been an ESL tutor in the past, having this institutional support was important for me as I wanted to be well-prepared for my students. The teaching set-up also requires each class to be taught by two teachers, which is very helpful! The students come from all around the world and have many different reasons for being in the program. I loved laughing with them, learning from them (as well as my co-teachers!!), and even learning a few things about the English language myself.

Needless to say, you can call me a francophile. The only time when "-phile" sounds positive. The charming home was the place for learning French language and the host of all kinds of francophile events. It was nice to learn about the organization and the events. I met the friendly management team Didier, Thomas and Marie at the event hosted by the Belgium Tourist Office in New York. They were promoting the 2012 Year of Gastronomy in Brussels. We were treated to St Feuillien beer, cheeses made from Chimay beer and a speech by the executive chef of the Belgium embassy about Belgium cuisine. He is a fan of seasonal food especially the game season in Belgium. How lovely. Then last Friday we were invited back to Alliance Française de Washington for a chocolate tasting event hosted by Neuhaus Chocolatier. They gave us a history of chocolate making that started in Belgium. Neuhaus is the inventor of praline and ballotine. We tried their handmade chocolates ranging from Tentation (traditional nougatine: toffee filled with coffee ganache) to Jean (ganache of intense dark Peruvian chocolate (64% cocoa mass)) to Truffe au Marc de Champagne to Marzipans. I was in chocolate heaven mmmmm......!!! It was yet another awesome event at Alliance Française de Washington. I am definitely heading to the Neuhaus store at the Union Station : P
