To get there by roads, you must pass through Asharoken, a locals-only kinda town, known for its radar detectors and speed trap-police force. I'll just say it makes for a nice bike ride. To see the lighthouse over the Sound, look just west of the four LILCO towers (It has a fixed Fresnel lens that doesn't blink or rotate). There is also an active Coast Guard station on-site here which, though closed to the public, can be arranged for groups and private tours. The T Bayles Minuse Mill Pond and Park (referred from this point on as…read moreThe Mill Pond) is where nature and history unite.    I have visited the Mill Pond and seen it from Christian Avenue several times over going all the way back to the Jimmy Carter Administration when I attended Minnesauke Elementary School. When I a little child, my mother brought me here to feed the ducks. Over 43 years from my first visits here in the 1970s, I returned here when visiting my Dad this summer.    This is a beautiful and charming postcard worthy spot where pristine Long Island lives. When I looked west, my eyes took in a forested hillside beside a pictorial pond. When I looked north I saw a small bridge carrying Harbor Drive over the stream feeding the pond from the Long Island Sound and the historic Stony Brook Grist Mill to the right. The wide shoreline that is interspersed with flowers and mature trees provides sufficient room for waterfowl and people. In this pictorial postcard scenery; the geese, birds, and squirrels were the stars.    There are signs along the pond that educate guests about the ducks and wildlife that live here. The sign said the ducks include mallard ducks, Peking ducks, gadwall, and wood ducks. On my last visit, I saw primarily geese.  The Mill Pond is the Gateway to the Avalon Park Trail, which travels through the forested hillside that I described. This is where my brother and I started off before hiking on the Avalon Park Trail. Following the hike, we'd sit by my dad who had been relaxing on a rock overlooking the pond.    The amount of historic sites surrounding the pond is commendable. We parked at the Stony Brook Village Center, which could be the oldest shopping center in America. On the way, we stopped at the Hercules Figurehead. After passing the Stony Brook Grist Mill, we made our way to the pond. If we kept walking past the pond we'd arrive at the Carriage House Museum. So, the Mill Pond can be an attraction in a day filled with historic attractions and taking in the Long Island Sound.    I am a fan of what I have always called the Stony Brook Mill Pond. In contrast to several of the Long Island forests, the Mill Pond shoreline  was not  a victim of the wrecking ball. On the contrary it only got better with land purchases that helped create the adjacent Avalon Park Trail. With that said, I would love to return to it again several times over.

Day 2 at Retro Church I arrived early and walked into a pre-service meeting which I did not know…read moreoccurred. As I tip toed in and almost shriveled with embarrassment of how early I was, my initial expectation was to have someone in the congregation tell me to wait outside until service time but that didn't happen. I was waved in by smiling faces and as I walked in to a seat I see a perky face telling me "Come sit here with me". The woman introduced herself as Theresa. When I say the "welcome" poured out from her I mean it. Once again it felt like home. As I continued to listen to their meeting, here comes Pastor Mike shouting me out for a google post I submitted (Yes, I'm now in Yelp posting...sue me). Although it was unexpected, the congregation made me feel like I have known them forever!. As service was about to begin here come Mary Ellen with her big smile and warm hug and right behind her is my Allie with another hug. Another warm welcome and a hug from Kelly who felt familiar and Jordan with her sweet smile also welcomed us. My daughter was with me and she looked at me like "what is going on?" this was her 1st church experience since she was younger so this threw her off but she later confessed it was nice. The service and the worship team were amazing and the message once again hit (there's that word again) home! Pastor Mike is blessed and highly anointed! This is his calling! The delivery of God's message was simple and resonates with everyone. Pastor Mike and his wife have created a very unique community. The worship music is a gift that fills your heart as you sing but the people are filled with the holy spirit. There is nothing fake about this church. I have to say I remembered a verse that came to mind as I prayed "Matthew 11:28-30: Jesus invites people who are weary and burdened to come to him, and he will give them rest" this church lives up to that because they welcome EVERYONE! There is no side eye or gossip about what you are wearing, no judgements just "Come as you are". If you want to visit and be a part of a holy Spirit filled church this is your HOME (can I get an Amen!). This is what different feels and looks like and Retro Church is definitely different. So umm, why are you still debating? Join us every Saturday at 10 a.m. you can hug me later.

My father has been a member of this church for 20+ years. Always going to the 7:30am Mass. sitting the same seat every Sunday. Always donating the same thing. You would think that if someone who has been so consistent over the years, is missing for three months, someone from the parish would call. To check on him. My 95 year old father has taken ill and not one person from the church has reached out. What kind of parish is this? While it's not on the scale of what has been happening around the World it's still ver disappointing and my family has lost what faith we have had in the church.

B4 even talked about you know 2 fix renovate damage... which back then which was either late 1984 early 90's David usually run out and ask people to donate do stuff. My younger sister got a coffee can and will put her allowance any change you found and actually got people to donate money and she offered it to the church. Even though we grew up in East Islip went to St Mary's Church in Saint Mary's School.... then all girls Catholic High School the Academy of Saint Joseph. All religious institutions regardless of the religion are beautiful structures. It's always best to restore them to the original beauty the best you can. I love antiques of everything whether it's architecture, meaning houses buildings, landmarks to artwork furniture. I've been there before and after and the after was phenomenal.
