My 85-year-old mother was taken to this hospital because she was experiencing severe hip pain. We repeatedly informed the medical staff that she had recently undergone a hip replacement. Instead of identifying the cause of her condition, the doctors determined she was losing blood and administered blood transfusions, but only after heavily medicating and sedating her. Over the course of four separate emergency visits, one every week, she received four blood transfusions. Despite this, no one thoroughly investigated why she was losing blood or why she continued to be in such pain. Each visit followed the same pattern: treat the symptoms with narcotic pain medication, give a transfusion, and discharge her without finding the underlying problem. Only after we repeatedly pleaded with the medical staff did they finally discover she was suffering from an internal bleed. She was then transferred to Long Island Jewish Hospital, where the medical team immediately evaluated her, administered another blood transfusion, identified the source of the bleeding, and successfully stopped it. Had the underlying cause been investigated during her first visit, my mother could have been spared weeks of unnecessary pain, repeated hospitalizations, and multiple blood transfusions. In my family's experience, this hospital focused on treating the immediate symptoms rather than diagnosing the root cause. They put me in a position where I had to sign out ama and they made up an excuse not to give discharge paperwork. Not only am I a psychologist but I'm a mandated reporter and I documented every episode of bad behaviors of the staff. They went around telling the patient how I'm on illegal substances and I was psychiatric. I'm going to go to criminal court and shut down this make believe hospital. Went to emergency care late evening, in the rain. I was logged in taken to a room about 8 x 8 . a curtain down the middle seperating myself Problem with this? Recent surgery with highly low immune system that could put me back in the hospital again. I was given a wrist ban, blood pressure taken after sitting there for an hour. Finally had a doctor come in to speak to me just to tell me he was trying to get in touch with my Mt. Sinai doctor. I actually had to call mt. sinai myself to get the covering doctor on the phone. Gave the phone to St. John doctor and still nothing happen, I sat there for yet another hour with a woman with two children, one running around and the other crying its head off. Meanwhile this enviroment could have caused me more serious illness as my immune system was low. I decided after four hours to leave. Next problem was my ride home. Apparently my driver /relative was told that I was staying overnight so they could come back in the morning to pick me up. So here I was, in a strange town, strange hospital, not taken care of and pouring rain and my driver gone because someone gave them wrong information. The next worst thing is they send me a BILL!!!!!!! FOR DOING NOTHING!!! THREE HUNDRED SOMETHING DOLLARS FOR WHAT? I am so sorry I did not choose to take the longer drive to Mt. Sinai Oceanside. But then sent me a bill for nearly Four Times More...and at the visit, the Dr only walked in, looked down at my foot from a distance, prescribed something I later found out I could BUY OVER THE COUNTER, told me there's nothing wrong and I need to wait till the nail grows out ..and that was it! He NEVER EVEN TOUCHED MY TOE, yet a month later, I got A BILL from St. Johns saying I owe them nearly four times more than I already paid at my visit!...JUST FOR DR. I was going to write my full review here, but I'll leave it here and write the details elsewhere like google or Facebook. They have overall 2 stars, I don't need to say much more. When I was there, I felt I was rushed, it didn't seem like the patient care was priority but servicing as many people as fast as possible is the objective. Rushing miss diagnosis and can also lead to being misdiagnosed. Maybe because I am brown was the cause. The hospital is beautiful, the nurses are wonderful. I encountered one staff member, Kendria Pilgrim, clinical assistant- very rude for no reason. This woman should not be around patients nor in the healthcare field period. She was so disrespectful to my sick adult child, but when the housekeeping male staff came around... she got all excited and talkative. The experience was weird and she single-handedly could be the reason why people talk bad about this hospital. My adult child asked for a glass of water, Ms Pilgrim said ok and then preceded to sit down at her desk... if you're unable to get water for patients say that or direct the patient to the right person that can help. How is this person allowed to be around humans? Not a nice look for St John's! My child was born at this hospital, we live in this neighborhood, there are good things going on at St John's, but she is definitely in need of a customer service inservice! read more

Going to keep this real short because I could go on and on, believe me..got rushed here last weekend and, while the doctors( aside from the arrogant,cocky,condescending resident on duty in the ER who was actually going to discharge me after not finding anything on my CT scan, and lo and behold,20 minutes later said"you do know, you had a minor heart attack so we're going to admit you ") were very good (Maybe because I was in CCU) the nurses in the ER were adequate at best ,but the nurses upstairs in CCU were excellent...Then I had to get transferred to Mount Sinai South Nassau for an angiogram which was clear thank goodness but while waiting for transport to come,witnessed an extremely upsetting experience So,all in all, with all the $$$ that's been poured into this facility it's like putting lipstick on a pig Hopefully I will never have to go here ever again!! read more

I hate writing a negative review esp. because all the staff involved in my husband's surgical biopsy were wonderful. It is the administration that we are reviewing. To set the stage, my husband is facing a life-threatening illness and after all the surgical prep he was asked to take off his rings which included his gold wedding ring. He hadn't taken it off because in a prior surgery at another hospital he had been able to keep the rings on. When he came out of anesthesia the rings were missing. He was in a stupor and didn't realize right away. When we reported it, we were shunted from office to office, no one would take the report. Finally, we complained to the doctor who did the surgery, he got some attention and we got a call from the administration saying they would look into it. Crickets! Our next step was to get a lawyer to contact them. From that, we got another call from the administration accusing us of lying "You can't prove you had the ring with you that day." For the record he never took it off unless absolutely necessary. We have received a letter from the administration (finally!) saying they will take up the issue at their next meeting but with all the delay and calling us liars we are not hopeful. We imagine they are lawyering up. We figure they know the diagnosis and the prognosis and if they delay long enough, we won't have the wherewithal to fight them. They might be right. Two weeks after this surgery we celebrated our 42nd anniversary. Not having the ring hurts. read more

I rarely give a 5 star review but this Hospital deserves it. I fractured my ankle and tibia a few days ago but thought I had twisted it.....again. I'm a klutz and have always been one Anyway I had gone to an Urgent Care center and radiological.......that's how I know my ankle and tibia were really fractured. Anyway I was given a referral to another place that has liars and unprofessional managers working there. I can't post the name of the place but did leave a review I went to another really horrible hospital (again I can't name it but left a review) before coming to this wonderful hospital. I should have come here first because it's close to my home but honestly it's not in the best neighborhood and that's what's prompted me to go elsewhere. I won't make that mistake again. From the second I walked into this extremely clean, updated beautiful reception area.....All of the ladies were extremely kind, supportive and helpful. They immediately got a wheelchair for me to sit in. I explained from the beginning of everything that I had been through that day, they immediately processed the paperwork quickly and efficiently for me. I was wheeled into a ER room and a few attending doctors along with Dr. Amy Lee was there within minutes. I was taken to have X-Rays done to confirm my leg was fractured in two places. When I was brought back to the Er room, they said I would need a splint an crutches. They carefully and gingerly wrapped my leg with white fluffy gauze then molded the splint and wrapped with several brown gauze wrap. They gave me information on how to care for my leg and bandages and when to make an appointment for another X-ray in 5 days. I will come to this WONDERFUL Hospital from now on, I feel so bad for judging this hospital based on its location but I learned a valuable lesson that I will never forget I highly recommend St. John's Episcopal Hospital for all of your medical needs read more

I received daily updates from the nurses and doctors who were looking after my mom. Worst experience ever! Brought my brother in law here as an emergency due to a fall and hitting his head. No one was concerned for him they were too focused on why was he so drowsy? After several times explaining to them what had happened they still had their own assumptions, as if they were there pushing the theory of him being high?!!! How dare you judge a patient when their exactly telling you what happened because they where there not to mention I was there too! No medications were given to him (he complained about head and neck pain all day) no check ups or follows ups with him were done. So sleeping the pain off seemed accurate on why he was feeling so sleepy or as what they would say "Drowsy". 8hrs went by and all we got was "his fine" yet the doctor still proceeds in asking us why is he still drowsy? (Your the doctor, you drew blood and scanned his head . So you tell us why!? ) Smh unbelievable, I was so patient and understanding from the start but as soon as they started being unprofessional with the questions, super negligence and pressuring my brother in law to say something that didn't happen was not right. Update : my brother in law was suppose to be discharged 45 min ago, doctor or nurse no where in site. Update : found the Doctor in the nurse station on his phone using the social media instead of filling out the paper work or instructing the nursery to do it, I had to remind them . I agree with most of the other reviews that said this place is dirty. It's dirty and it shouldn't be; it's a hospital. Brought out my urine sample, covered, gave it to the nurse who then proceeded to open it up on my bed, took two samples from it, spilling some on the bed in the process and LEFT IT! I can't. With so many people saying the same thing, why is this allowed? I know why, because most of the patients are poor and minority. read more

The hospital overall is completely dirty and they're understaffed so it makes it very overwhelming and overstimulating for the good employees. But on the other hand, there's about 2 hand full of employees that went above and beyond when I went there to get my gallbladder removed. If I could make a rating just on the nurses, pcts, and Dr. Dmitriy Kims surgery team i'd give a PERFECT rating because of these specific individuals who attended to me and helped me out immensely!! But unfortunately the hospital overall wasn't as good as the care from these specific individuals and sadly a lot of the staff pick and choose who they want to give good care to which is very sad. Again, Dr. Kims surgery team was AMAZING, Dr. Kim helped me a ton by performing my surgery and doing a great job at that, so grateful for him and his team and all the hospital staff that were a pleasure to be around and did their jobs amazing on top of being overstimulated! My review is strictly based on how *sarcasm begins* great the security of the hospital is. My grandmother was admitted for a fracture, I walked right in no questions asked. Knew her room number took the elevator up, without encountering any questions or comments. Walked right into her room to see her leaning against the wall. Seems as though the nurse forgot to come back for her after she used the rest room. The low rating is for the dangerous people that can walk right in, without signing in. Anything can happen and this scares me. What if there was a serial-grandparent-murderer? I'm sure my grandmother would kick some buttocks. I should actually be worried for the intruders... Why three starts? Why indeed. Three things happened that made my time less stressful: 1) Parking was 7$ by the time we arrived at 7pm. They let us park without paying because visiting hours was ending at 8pm 2) no one knew we were in the room with my grams, to our luck we were able to stay until 9:15 before someone noticed us. 3) Security didn't directly ask us to leave just mentioned visiting ended at 8pm. I'm highly upset right now due to covid I chose to let my wife go with my 18 year old daughter whose had a long battle with [RA] rheumatoid arthritis and so they read her chart I'm assuming and injected her with steroids and discharged her feeling the same way she went in 6 hours later she's still in pain vomiting so they go back they run CT, MRI and say she has bad (RA) in her back admit her different doctor's telling my wife different things then boom without checking if she's able to eat or drink and hold it down they discharge her with a script and nurse says here's your script but st. John's pharmacy and CVS don't carry it so my wife goes to cvs and boom they have the meds but it's a fake script so she go to st.john hospital pharmacy and hands the script the pharmacist says there's a problem we have the meds but this script isn't real so he calls nurse and explains 30 minutes later she walks in pharmacy hand a new script and he said it's not filled out correctly doctor's numbers aren't on script she makes calls, text and 30 minuets later she fills code in script hands it to pharmacist and wala she got my daughters meds so they gave her a fake script and said don't go to the 2 closest pharmacy due to them not carrying the meds but in reality they knew they gave her a fake script and now she been home in pain and vomiting bio due to not being able to hold anything down if I take her I'm going to end up in jail with or without covid-19 going on it's no excuse to treat a human like this oh my wife ask the nurse so you know you gave me a bogus script she said I didn't know and flipped her I'd badge over like my wife didn't get her name already even pharmacist said to her how can you give this to someone as a script she was speechless think I'm b.s.ing here's the script read more

I can't say enough how grateful I am of the amazing work and dedication I have experienced I this hospital. I had a high risk pregnancy but always felt at ease with the support from my OBGYN team. When the day came, the labor and delivery department department went above and beyond to make sure both the baby and I were safe. When my little one came into the world, the maternity department was always ready to address all my questions and concerns. Overall I would recommend this hospital every single time. read more

I must give credit when credit is due. I've been to the ER at this hospital before and it wasn't the best experience; had a long wait and staff was rude. I've been to several emergency rooms for work purposes throughout all NYC and let me tell you it's about the same. They have a long wait, it smells, rude staff and shady characters. This isn't any different. Had to come in for stitches for my toddler after urgent care told me liquid stitches wouldn't help. I was so upset and was considering driving to Brooklyn or even long island for care but I had to act fast so I came here hoping they wouldn't butcher my baby's face. When I got there I was registered quickly and waited about an hour to actually get inside to triage. Met with the assistant who was a lovely older woman who was so sweet. She put my son at ease and made him feel comfortable. I then met with the PA. I wish I didn't forget his name but he was great. He was alone at the ER when I was there and he held it together with the help of his assistant. He spoke to my son and let me tell you he did an amazing job . He required three stitches and I was afraid it would leave a strange mark on his face but so far it's looking good. I don't have the stomach for blood and all that stuff but because it's my child I wanted to know what was going on. He was quick yet careful and did a clean job! My son didn't cry and we were in and out within less than 2 hours. read more

I always dreaded the day when I would have to go here. But I had a bad allergic reaction and it was getting out of control so I went here. I went to the ED (emergency department) and honestly it wasn't the bad. It was a Monday holiday night and so you could imagine the things I saw. However, triage was quick and painless. Once I was in the ED, however it felt like a free-for all. I don't know, maybe I'm used to a different emergency room feel but this was crazy. I was dodging stretchers and people left and right. I felt like there was no room for people and it was just a shit show. I waited hours after arriving and taking a cocktail of pills, which I get as they were assessing me condition. However, the bedside manner was rare, most of the staff seemed overly stressed and impersonal. I did like my provider...Aslam I think was her name, she was really nice but I don't know. They seem to need more staffing, room space and some staff are rude asf. Coming from the emergency field it was obvious that some providers have no bedside manners. I won't rant but we all have a job and we need to provide the best care especially if we put into perspective that we could find ourselves in that situation. Overall? If you need to go here then go. an emergency cannot wait but if you aren't dying and need to go somewhere else then by all means. read more

Do not use for diagnostic purposes! I was sent by my doctor for a CT Scan of my neck. The report came back that everything is normal. My thyroid lobe is normal (I had a total thyroidectomy). It also stated that my larynx is normal and no masses found. If it wasn't for a second opinion I would have died from cancer of the vocal cord which existed during the CT scan but totally missed.
