This is a lovely congregation in South Minneapolis. They are friendly and committed to social…read morejustice issues. They have an active and lively education program for children age 3 - senior high and also for adults (Sunday morning forum and other various Bible studies). Several years ago, they completed the process for becoming a Reconciling in Christ congregation which means that they have an intentional statement of welcome for LGBT people and their families. The pastor is a smart and funny woman named Pastor Susan. Her sermons are always thought provoking and intelligent, but they aren't so esoteric that you have to be a theology major to understand the message. Baptisms are really cool, here. The children of the congregation are invited to come forward and stand near the font so that they are up close to what is happening and can feel the splash of water on themselves, reminding them of their own baptism. Once a month they collect "Change to Change the World" and some visiting kids have called them the "Change Church" --- the little stray coins in the bottom of pockets and purses multiply to do good works in the neighborhood and the world. The children of the congregation go up and down the aisles during the offering with brightly colored cans, and the clinking of the coins is loud and joyous. The sanctuary is a beautiful, traditional "tiny gothic cathedral" style. Most of the music is traditional, too. The order of worship is printed on bulletins (rather than projected in a PowerPoint). The organist and the musicians are first rate, and the congregational singing is awesome, too. There are two worship services during the school year: 8:30 and 10:30 AM on Sundays, with the education hour (for kids and adults) at 9:15. Coffee and treats and a time for gathering and fellowship is offered after worship, which is really nice if you want to catch up with a friend. I highly recommend visiting this congregation --- you will be welcomed! From the outside, it reminds me of an old tv repair shop with stain-glass windows and a small parking lot adjacent to the building. It stands on the corner of Chicago and 38th Street, two very busy and infamous intersections, that have their own stories to tell. The inside of the church is small; two level. When you walk into the double door, there's a small entryway and then a room of many chairs and a pulpit that takes up the majority of the west wall. It's a modest church, with a congregation that is warm, inviting and friendly. Your greeted by ushers and provided with a bulletin of what's going on within the church weekly and for the month and sheet to give any prayer requests that you may have. Service: You're coming for the message, but I suppose the combination factor are the people as well, who help make up the congregation or who visit. The Pastor, Curtis Farrar, preaches a message that has passion and heart and knowledge, but he has an approach that makes him relatable and real. He seems to really care if you have a relationship with God and wants to teach you how to. They have prayer on Monday at 7pm, Bible Study on Wed at 7pm, Friday night service at 7pm, Sunday services at 9 & 11am. I'll be back!

On the outside we see the quaint architecture of laid carved stone with magnificent features. Their website states the church started in 1922. The chapel area has been modernized as have other churches to remove all signs of stuffiness to welcoming with open arms. The beautiful stain glass is in all windowed areas but especially in the chapel as the multi-colored light streams forms a backdrop halo effect on those leading mass. The community church has many free functions including concerts, dinners and other events.

The Fish Fry is in the cafeteria which is in the basement of the school. The meal price included a beer or wine and a lot of good food. I tried everything they offered except for the vegables (which were steamed green beans and carrots.) You could choose fried and/or baked fish. I tried both, the baked was more meaty than the fried, both good. The sides, for me, baked potato, french fries, coleslaw, a cheese filled bread stick and a cookie. I really like he baked potato and fries. The coleslaw was fine. The cookie was a nice way to end a good Fish Fry. If you're into Fish Fries, mark you calendar for Nativity of our Lord. They aren't every week, check the website for the Mens Club Fish Fry.
