I had a major surgery, about 8 hours long. I will try to avoid having surgery in the future there. Neither do the doctors or nurses commun icate with the patient. I was given high does of pain medication via IV for several days. The doctors changed my auto refill to on demand refill of my pain meds. I spent days in agony because I was supposed to ask for my pain meds. The only problem is no one told me. Today is my 11th day and over the days time and again I have suffered unnecessarily because my nurse felt they should try using less pain meds !! Again with out telling me. It has just happened again. I was wondering why my pain was growing. I made the choice to stop taking my tylenol # 2 every 6 hours and just take my every dilauded 4 mg every 4 hours. The nurse thought I should only get 2 mg. She did on her own. I had a piece bone removed in my rt leg to replace a apart of my lower jaw bone ( destroyed during radiation therapy, many years ago) I was told today I will not be able to leave the hospital until I can walk in a walking boot. The nurse told me it was in file. They have put it on for me 4 times and every time it cause me excruciating pain, because it puts pressure on my unhealed wound. I have order a knee cart so I can more easily get around; especially in public. This will be my 10th surgery in my life and I am over 70 years old. today I had a heated argument with a nurse. I said after a while lets agree to disagree. She NO your are going to hear me out. I asked 1) please my room she just kept talking and after asking her to leave my room 3 times. she still kept talking so I picked up my phone and told her I was going to call security she finally left. IF I NEED TO GET AN IMPORTANT SURGERY, I WOULD NEVR COME HEAR AGAIN. Now I find out the reason I only got 2mg of dilauded is because they now altered my file from 4 mg to 2-4 mg of dilauded. with out telling me and at the nurse whim and I again had no input. I unfortunately was forced to visit the St. Joseph's Hospital emergency department on December 26, 2012 due to an emergency in the car on the way home from a family event. I will first say that the triage nurse we initially spoke with was generally friendly and helpful. Also, as it was a holiday, it's understandable that the hospital was short-staffed and so a long wait was expected. However, what we found shocking and incredibly disappointing were the numerous cases of meanness and bullying we witnessed during our visit: Example 1: As we waited in the triage area, a man in the waiting area fell out of his wheelchair. The nurse who came to lift him up berated him for trying to get up, and was just oddly rude--as he was essentially unresponsive. Example 2: When we first ran into the emergency department in a panic asking if we were in the correct location, the paramedics were completely disinterested; they grunted an affirmative and went back to their conversation. Example 3: The most concerning event occurred after two paramedics wheeled a man into the waiting room on a gurney. The man was clearly in pain, moaning and clutching his chest; however, the paramedics assigned to care for him paid him practically no attention. He complained about not being able to breath three times before one of the paramedics brought over an oxygen tank. When he asked how much longer it would be until he could see a doctor, the paramedics dismissed his question with a rude "there are no beds, what do you expect me to do?" As this man writhed and moaned in pain the two paramedics sat in the waiting room playing solitaire and checking Facebook on their phones. It was surreal. We then approached a triage nurse to see if she could provide him with some care. Without checking on him, she told us "He's fine" and "I work with these paramedics frequently and I can guarantee you they are not playing solitaire." She then exited the triage station and complained to the paramedics that people should mind their own business! When one of the other nurses finally came to look at this man she condescendingly said to the sick man: "Looks like you've got your friend all riled up--haven't these people seen someone with the flu before?" The man hadn't even seen the doctor yet! In the end, our family member had to check out of the hospital at 2:00 am (roughly eight hours after arriving) after her doctor failed to reappear (or even send word) at 1:00 am as she had promised. Not only that, but we then discovered on her ECG forms that she may have had a heart attack--no one had mentioned this to any of us. She's since visited another hospital and thankfully appears to be on the mend. Though seeing such poor care is terrible when its for someone you love, my concerns with the hospital also extend beyond my personal experience. Generally, the health care workers we encountered in the emergency department (with a few exceptions) did not seem to understand the care portion of their job description. Many were mean, bullying, and showed little interest in the patient's well-being--no amount of short-staffing or long hours can justify this. read more
