What initially drew us in were the many young families who call this parish home. They offer "children's church" during the 11 a.m. Mass & have a Catholic school as part of the campus. I also love our cantor and the contemporary music played at the 11 a.m. service. Traditional hymns are played too, but I especially enjoy when we get to sing from the more modern "Voices" hymnal. If you're looking for a vibrant Catholic community to call home, I highly recommend St. Catherine of Siena!

St. Cletus is a lovely church that was renovated a few years back with new everything from floors to altar. They hold mass every morning at 9 am during the week and on Saturday evenings at 4. The church holds a yearly parish fair with entertainment and games and a flea market, as well as a yearly oyster festival. They also hold weekly spaghetti dinners and fish frys on Fridays during Lent. The staff and priests are very nice and welcoming to new parishioners.

The space becomes extremely crowded, making it difficult to move around and causing long delays getting in and out. The setup creates safety concerns in an emergency. Parts of the liturgy are recited and sung in English, which are unappealing and make it feel protestant. Shabbat meals are generally "kosher-style" rather than kosher, which is fine, but there have even been occasions where meat and dairy were served together. Children's programming is terrible. Saw kids being allowed to be disrespectful toward babysitters and teachers with no consequence, and there's very little emphasis on the kids actually learning. Children are regularly encouraged to do writing and crafts on Shabbat. They regularly alter their schedule to accommodate Christian holidays. For example, services may be canceled when Shabbat falls on Christmas, and Hanukkah programming almost never occur during Hanukkah when it's too near Christmas. They usually celebrate holidays on the shabbat closest instead of celebrating the actual holidays. Almost all programming is geared either toward families with young children or older adult. Communication can be difficult, and despite frequently describing itself as welcoming, that was not my personal experience.

The indoor space was kind of tight, so people ended up filing into random rooms and the catering staff had to navigate through to make sure food got to the back. I visited this church, for the first time, to view their St. Joseph's Altar. I had heard that their…read morealtar is spectacular, and it definitely didn't disappoint. The altar here is huge and gorgeous and decorated with everything from cakes and cookies to seafood and candles. I can see why people come from all over Louisiana come to see this altar. I tried to take some good pictures, but there was no way I could capture the majesty of this thing in one single frame. Needless, to say, the line was out the door. One thing I like about the way they do things here: they have two lines. The super long line is for people who not only want to view the altar, but also eat some of the food and there is another entrance for people who want to see the altar, but don't want to eat. There are also people selling prayer cards, candles, holy water, rosaries and other religious items, if that is something that might interest you. The outside of the church itself is amazing and lovely and is a beautiful addition to this quiet Gretna neighborhood. The grounds of the church courtyard are extremely spacious, and I liked that there is a nice area with benches, if you want to relax and say some prayers while enjoying the nice weather.
