What a beautiful old church! Whenever I am in town for a Sunday Mass, this is my preferred church to attend it in. From the outside, it isn't much to look at. Kind of like many of the homes in the Quarter but walk inside and it's Oh My! Immaculate Conception looks just like the Old World Catholic churches in Europe. And as old as it looks and beautiful too it can also be very modern. For the first time in my life I saw a collection basket with an electronic credit card reader! Don't have cash, no problem! Forgot to bring your weekly envelope with a check inside, no problem! Just whip out that plastic, select your amount on the screen and tap! I about fell out of my pew when I saw that this past weekend. Amazing! An usher told me later that it has increased collections because people don't like to carry cash. What a novel idea! read more

Very happy that on our last day here (Thursday) we found that they open the door to the public. We walked by this church multiple times on our way back and fort to our hotel and French Quarter and was sad that it was closed to the public for viewing and prayers. This is where Madonna's Immaculate Collection was recorded, and I came in to buy some suits, I said, do you have suits, and the guy here said "Jes, suits" so I knew I was in the right place. Probably one of the most beautiful and classic and Euro looking buildings in the country. One of the most magnificent churches I have ever seen. I didn't even know it existed until the most recent trip to New Orleans, but now that I do, I am sure I will be coming back here on many occasions and recommending it to many others. It's stunning. Let the photos speak for themselves, and next time you are in New Orleans, come to the downtown area and see it for yourself. Only 2 minutes walk from Bourbon Street if the crosswalk says "walk." If not, don't get hit by a tram or anything silly. Especially while carrying open alcohol. Terrible waste of alcohol. read more

Love this church that blends so many architectural styles. The church was originally completed in 1857. In the 1920s, the church was significantly damaged due to the construction of the Pere Marquette building next door. The floor of the church actually split in half requiring the church to be disassembled due to safety reasons in 1928. The new church building which incorporated many elements from the original church was dedicated in 1930. The Jesuit Church uses design elements from Gothic Revival, Moorish Revival and Byzantine Revival architecture. Love the Moorish rosettes and arches. The nave is soaring and open. The Moorish domes on top of the altar as well as the miter-shaped arches are so reminiscent of European cathedrals built in this style. The stained-glass windows are so beautiful. Definitely walk around to enjoy the elements, statues and prayer chapels. The altar is stunning. It was handmade in France and is plated with 24 karat gold. The design, by James Freret of New Orleans, won first prize in the Paris Exposition of 1867. There are more than 600 pieces to it. The statue of St. Peter is a bronze replica of the statue in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Similar to the statue in Rome, St. Peter's foot is worn down due to so many people that have touched it. The mosaics are beautiful. One represents Our Lady of Prompt Succor to honor two miraculous interventions by Mary in New Orleans. The first miracle was to save the old Ursuline Convent from a fire that ravaged the city in 1788. The second was a plea to help the Americans soldiers in the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 against the British. Check to schedule to enjoy a tour of even a service. I was able to catch the end of a Sunday morning organ service. So lucky to able to listen to the beautiful organ and soloist in this historic Jesuit church. read more

The Immaculate Conception Jesuit Church is located in the central business district of New Orleans just off Canal Street. The church was originally built in the 1850s but suffered some foundational damage and had to be rebuilt in 1930. Interestingly, the second build was exactly the same as the first so what we saw here was what it looked like 150+ years ago. The interior was beautiful with stained glass windows all over and was very peaceful. When we stepped inside, we were the only ones there and it was so quiet. We were whispering while we were walking around because it felt weird to even talk in our normal voices and we didn't know if we were even supposed to be there. Even if you don't come here during mass, it is still nice to walk around and marvel at the beauty. read more

Beautiful church! Perfect venue for a wedding especially at Christmas time. The poinsettias are magnificent.

If you are interested in architecture this is a must see, nestled in the midst of taller buildings. Other reviews report what there is to see. The facade with the Moorish domes stand out. I loved the beautiful mosaic of the Virgin Mary and statues of St. Anthony and St. Patrick near the entrance. Yes, gold altar from Lyon is stunning. I did wonder why there were six-pointed (Jewish) stars on most of the columns. read more

As a lifelong Catholic, I would be hard pressed to find a fault major enough to render a bad rating to a church. Gratefully, this will not be the case either. Immaculate Conception Church, known locally as Jesuit Church, is a Roman Catholic church located in the New Orleans Central Business District just a few hundred feet off of world famous Canal Street. Lots of die hard Catholics working and/or living near the CBD attend one of the weekday masses at 7:30 AM and 12:00 noon. And once Lent arrives, the weekday masses gather even more people. It wasn't until quite recently that I learned that the current church, completed in 1930, is almost a duplicate of an older church bearing the same name that was built in 1859. Unfortunately, the original church suffered major structural damage to the foundation due to the construction of the Pere Marquette building. In fact, according to Wikipedia, the church's floor "split in half"! Immaculate Conception is a stunning church, perhaps one of the most beautiful in the city. It was built and designed in the Neo-Venetian Gothic style of Gothic Revival architecture, with Moorish Revival and Byzantine Revival elements. The church rises to towering heights, but its true splendor can only be appreciated once you enter. The nave is enormous and the stained glass windows are some of the most intricate I have ever seen. The pews are also something to marvel as they are all made of cast iron. But in my opinion, the true highlight of the church is the altar, which was handmade in France and is plated in 24K gold. It is absolutely stunning and worth the visit here. Go check it out, even if you are not a religious person and simply a fan of gorgeous buildings. read more

A beautiful church with a hospitable congregation! I visited NOLA for a research conference, and this church was a walk away from my hotel. I don't normally hang around after mass for fellowship at a parish I'm visiting, but a couple parishioners invited me to have coffee and donuts with them in the hall so I joined in. Everyone was so welcoming and lovely. The church was so beautiful as well! I'm very glad I attended service here. read more

Even with our priest not making the rehearsal, Julie and Lynn made sure everything went smoothly the day of the wedding. The church itself is absolutely breathtaking and the priest was amazing. As a wedding professional I would highly caution you about getting married here specifically and ONLY because of the woman coordinating the weddings, Julie. As mentioned in a previous review, she is brutal. I think the idea of a wedding day being about the bride and groom may not be in her thought process and it is more of a power trip on her end. Having worked in many churches I know there are rules which is no issue at all. Not allowing the bride and groom simple requests and being rude just for the fact of being rude, is not acceptable in this type of setting especially. Hustling a couple and/or guests on their wedding day, having extremely and frankly very unreasonable requests for vendors is absurd. The way she spoke to guests and the wedding professionals at the church was anything but friendly despite being fully receptive to all of her rules and requests. I was told by one of the wedding professionals working with me on the wedding day that she has seen Julie make brides cry ON THEIR WEDDING DAY. It is highly commendable that couples still get married in churches like this but after the experience I saw with my couple, I wouldn't be surprised if people turned away specifically because of her behavior. She needs to be in another profession but certainly not coordinating the happiest day of peoples lives. There should not have any added stress from a church coordinator on an already extremely high-stress and fast paced day. If you are planning to get married here I would suggest having a word with your priest and requesting to use your own coordinator with a list of obvious reasons why. read more

Another beautiful old Catholic church in New Orleans. The Immaculate Conception Jesuits church is located just off Canal Street on the American side (which is upriver to the French Quarter), across from the renovated Roosevelt Hotel. We were here for a wedding, which is how I usually get to discover the many unique churches that dot the old city areas. The interior ambiance did not disappoint for the wedding ceremony. I'm sure the bride had to schedule the church long in advance of the date. Very European with the multitudes of statues in their niches, candles burning, and the paintings/frescoes that adorn the walls. It is obvious there is a lot of care for the old building. read more

This is a beautiful old church right off of Canal Street. It has these wonderful pews made of wood and iron and impressive stained glass windows. There are several Mass times and refreshments after most Sunday services if you would like to grab coffee, touch bases with a priest, or chat up members and visitors. Besides its beauty, it has many needed ministries for the community. The Harry Tompson Center helps the poor and homeless (http://www.harrytompsoncenter.org/) with the basic needs we take for granted. They even help with mental and legal services. The church is involved with the St. Vincent de Paul Society which offers rental and utility assistance. It has its own tuition-free school for at-risk kids (http://thegoodshepherdschool.org/) and helps support Cafe Reconcile (http://reconcileneworleans.org/) founded by Father Tompson and others. It "is a nonprofit organization providing at-risk youth (16-22) with opportunities to learn life, interpersonal, and work skills for success." What a beautiful church. The architectural detail, artwork and statues are amazing. We came for the 11:00am and there was plenty of room. First let me start by saying this church is absolutely stunning and I'd get married here again and deal with the awful director just to get married in this church, my husband on the other would not. Julie Vanderbrook, the church's director was absolutely awful to work with. When booking this church know that if you are not a parishioner you will "need to find your own priest." Ok, understandable. They do many weddings and the priest would never catch a break, but being an out of town bride I asked Ms. Vanderbrook if she had a list of priests in the area that may be able to officiate our ceremony. Her response was "No, I guess you'll have to find someone who lives here to help you out." The night of the rehearsal I arrived 10 minutes late, yes I understand that was rude, but she told my mother "oh well, we are starting without her!" It was a stressful time with many moving parts and I apologized. She ran through the rehearsal one time and expected everyone to get it. We were out of there in 20 minutes. No one really knew what they were supposed to do. She didn't explain herself well and we all felt very rushed. The day of the wedding she was an absolute nightmare. Our wedding started at 7:00 and guests who arrived at 6:55 were told, by Ms. Vanderbrook, "You are late!". My husband wanted to escort his sister down the aisle and at 6:40 she started rushing him telling him to go go go, finally he had to look at her and say, no one is even here yet, I'm not walking her down. So she continued to nag and he ignored her. Now what really sent me over the edge was how I found out she treated my mother. It was 6:45 and because the church doesn't have a bridal room we had to get a room at the hotel across the street and since we were so rushed through the rehearsal and I was a nervous bride I didn't realize I was supposed to be there at 6:45 and to be completely honest, I didn't want to be standing around while people filed in and see me in my dress before I walked down the aisle. My bridesmaids and I arrived at 6:58. At 6:45 this woman had my mother in TEARS. She was incessantly asking my mother, "Where is your daughter?! Where is your daughter?! She is so rude!" There were many of instances that she was rude to guests and family members but I'd be writing for days. A wedding is already stressful enough and all Ms. Vanderbrook did was add to the stress and really, escalate it. I do understand that it is New Orleans and you deal with people who may not be considerate but no one in our party was rude, drunk, loud, etc. There was absolutely no reason for this woman to act the way she did. I honestly don't understand why she is the director of weddings at Immaculate Conception. We fully intend to write a letter to the priest and bishop to let them know how she is running the weddings at this church. For the amount of money you pay to get married there, you should not be treated like garbage. read more

During my visit to New Orleans, I was staying the the Roosevelt Hotel across the street. The first day I checked in I noticed the church and decided I would sneak a peak. I'm so glad I did. The facade itself is impressive and beautiful with its rising twin towers. Inside its a classic Roman Catholic church, statues, candles, serenity. I took a look around, took many pictures, and then just sat and enjoyed the peace and tranquillity of the space. Father Frank Reale is the Pastor and gives the best sermons I have heard in years. He brings his family and experiences to us and usually gets a laugh or two from the congregation . I have also encountered others [lay people] who are also very friendly and great to talk to. I am a local who has gone to the "Jesuit Church" on Baronne on and of for years but had strayed away from Sunday Mass on a regular basis but went back about 4 years to pray for a troubled friend but because of Father Frank and his sermons go every Sunday and even during the week when I can. read more

We were staying in a nearby hotel and saw this church. I am glad I ventured to look inside on a Saturday before the mass. It was so beautiful. I even found a statue of St. Francis Xavier, my patron saint! I took lots of pictures since this is the first time I saw his statue. St. Patrick and St. Anthony statues were also there. The pews were designed intricately and the interior was simply awesome. Do visit if you are staying in the central business district.
