It's a nice church to look at as well, although as with all churches it does get cold. The car park is right next door and there are no steps so it's easy to get wheelchairs and prams in and out.

The building & grounds have been refurbished as part of the George Street Cultural Quarter initiative. The Foundation Stone of Holy Cross Church, was laid in 1860 and the Solemn Opening of the church took place on Thursday 1st May 1862. The church is pretty big and well looked after inside. Mass times are Sunday at 9.30am and weekdays at 12.15pm.

It gets very busy at Sunday service; it's a 9am mass so it's quite popular. There is no choir or folk group but the service is still uplifting and the congregation very welcoming.

The only drawback to this church would be if you wanted to get married it doesn't have a centre aisle so can look at bit strange with the bride walking down one side of the church. Residents would quite often find notes on their cars reprimanding them if we dared to park on the churches land, even if there wasn't a service on or another car in sight! No give and take or community spirit. People living in the area of St Austins Parish and it's adjoining school have had to put up with much disruption from all the construction work being carried out for St Austins school next door. We've had double yellow lines imposed on us that only the residents of Heath Street seemed to have adhered to as the vast majority of the Parishoners, construction workers and HGV wagons etc. ignore the DOUBLE YELLOW LINES and park on them Also the parishioners and construction vehicles also seem to think they have the right to drive down Heath Street which was conveniently made into a one way street, the wrong way! to access the Church and the construction site. And now with what seems a very mean spirited and uncaring attitude, after many, many years of people and children in the community around Thatto Heath using the grassed land off Govett Road to play on, walk their dogs on, use as a short cut through to other areas of Thatto Heath and also people using it to gain as access to get to their allotments have now had this taken away from them -A very large chunk of this field has been completely blocked off and taken for a school field that will probably get used 2 - 3 times a year. Where was the community spirit? As small walk way for people to still cut through the exisiting land to still play on, access allotments and walk their dogs on what is left, would have been much appreciated by many people. I am sorry but after living 6 years by this church, I will be glad to move when I can.

Usually the only musical instruments used are organ and piano, although occasionally there are guests musicians with other instruments. The service is kind of melding of formal and informal, and there is often a children's talk at the beginning of the sermon. Dress is semi casual, but most older people dress up. They also house the Wirral Chinese Church. Some further information that may be of interest to some: --The Church runs a youth Club on a Saturday evening ( 6.30 - 9.00pm) for teens aged 13-19yrs old. --The church also runs a drop-in-centre for the homeless and people with drug and alcohol dependency on Wednesday afternoon (12-3.00pm.) --Bible Study discussion groups/ prayer groups meet Tuesday evenings and Wednesday mornings. -- Age Concern meet in the church building five days a week providing activities for hundreds of the over 50's. --Slimers world also meet every Tuesday

As population increased, so did the size of the church, with additions to the fabric in 1853 and 1913. The church still stands proud and looks very impressive. There are Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday services. Tuesday is the drop in session and Wednesday is Holy Communion. Sunday is a busier day with Holy Communion starting at 8am (not sure I would make that time!) and Family Communion at the later time of 10.15am. The children's and young group takes place at 10.15am also. There is plenty of room for parking, a regular choir, beautiful stained glass, and a organ that certainly pumps out the music.

St Winefride's Well often referred to as the 'Welsh…read moreLourdes' is reputed to be Britain's oldest continuously visited pilgrimage site. The unique well-head and St Winefride's Chapel above constitute some of Wales's best 15th century architecture. History Shrouded in legend, the site is said to date from the 7th century, when Winefride, daughter of a local nobleman and a devout Christian, was decapitated by the local Chieftain Caradog for resisting his advances. Through the prayers of her Uncle, Saint Beuno, her head was restored with only a faint scar, and a spring flowed from the spot where her head had fallen. Whatever the legend, the historic Winefride became a nun and ultimately abbess of the foundation at Gwytherin, and died there in 660AD. The well has since been a popular pilgrimage site, especially through the middle ages. Royal visitors have included Richard I, Henry V, Edward IV, and Richard III. James II and his second wife, Mary of Modena, visited in 1686 and it is said their prayers for a child were answered by the birth of their son, James Stuart. The present well-head and chapel were built in the early 1500s, although the shrine of St Winefride was destroyed in the reformation. Despite the best efforts of the authorities, the well continued to be a popular place of pilgrimage and was associated with the Catholic recusancy. The well was rented by the Jesuits in 1873 and is now in the care of the Catholic Diocese of Wrexham. St Winefride's Chapel is in the care of Cadw. The well and chapel The well complex includes a modern entrance building, museum and shop, with attractive lawns fronting the well-head. There is a large modern pool beside the well, where bathing is still permitted at certain times. The well-head itself (effectively forming the crypt of the chapel above) is an intricate structure, the stone-lined pool covered with an elaborate octagonal late Perpendicular vault. A profusion of elaborately carved bosses include depictions of St Winefride's legend, the likely patron of the building, Lady Margaret Beaufort, and scenes of healing. Nearby is a modern statue of St Winefride, complete with neck scar. The Chapel above is a delightful example of Perpendicular architecture, with a fine wooden roof and wide windows filled with clear glass. Corbels and bosses abound with yet more carving, depicting saints and angels, heraldic devices, beasts, dragons, hunting scenes and grotesque faces. The Chapel hosts occasional festival services.

Visited April 2015: "For Pilgrims suffering from aches and pains"…read more We were not sure where to park, since we did not see a parking lot adjacent to the buildings. We went through the gift shop, and paid 1 pound to get in. We were able to see several pilgrims swimming in the waters of the well. There is a garden and small cemetery attached to the buildings. My friend lit a candle and we were on our way.

Well, this is my parish. Over the years I have experienced: little church; first holy communions;…read moreconfirmations; midnight masses and christmas choir recitals; easter celebrations with homemade palms and creme eggs, and countless services. The local congregation many of whom went to my primary and secondary school are all friendly locals who are charitable and compassionate joining in wholeheartedly with community fundraisers and appeals. The parish holds close ties with it's local namesake St Edmund's School which stands beside it. The large brick building connected to the lower school is the parish hall where lots of local clubs such as dance groups meet.
