I bought quite a few little stocking fillers like a growing penguin, a little man that my toddler can bend bubbles, a Kazoo (that you blow) all for under £1 each. This shop will take you back to your childhood. The service is also really good as I asked if they sold a certain type of item and the lady said they used to and went to their store room to see if they had any of the items left. Unfortuantely they did not but she went out of her way to help me.

But since the Post office has moved there seems to be alot less people in the shop as the location isnt the best as its set away from the rest of the shops. But its a great shop stocking all newspapers, magazines, drinks snacks and cigarettes of course which not many places in town stock. One of the largest markets in the South East it's so popular that they actually run coach trips here! The market is mixed and contains stalls ranging from clothing through meat, vegetables through CDs. Some stalls, such as the CD stall outside Debenhams or Peter the Pleater's blind stall have been there for years. Others are newer. The market stands on a cobbled area and is fringed by the shops and, more recently, some living accommodation. The ancient St Edwards church provides a focal point and gives the whole area a rather historic feel. Market days are Wednesday, Friday and Saturday with the market place being used for car parking outside these times. Expect the market to be operational before 9am and to close up around 4pm or later if trade is good. There's an Eastend buzz about the place but it's not what it used to be!

Although it is not possible to buy porn here, Hamdy's has a huge selection of other types of magazines, from fashion to fishing and everything in between. It's almost as if they are trying to encourage non porn related hobbies and I think it's all very refreshing. They also stock everything else a porn free newsagent should have: cigarettes, sweeties and Ebony cards. These are my favourite cards, they feature ebony beauties in all sorts of situations (playing pool, going to church, etc.) and say things like "You are a strong, good man, a man that doesn't walk away, Happy Birthday brother." What more could you ask from a paper shop? If your answer is porn than go buy it in Soho, because in Stoke Newington, we like to keep things nice and clean.

It has been run by an extremely helpful and friendly family for many years. The shop is very handy to those living in the Heybridge community but remains a little hidden to those passing through the village. It is primarily a Newsagent but stocks many basic food items and is very handy if you just need a pint of milk. If regulars request something the owners will endeavour to get it within a few days. The prices of goods are more expensive than supermarkets but not terribly over priced. A handy little newsagent if you are in the area by a lovely couple.

The sales staff was absolutely top-notch, and while the staff person was busy identifying several of the books by John Berger that were available, he and I had a nice conversation about Berger. As it turns out, London Review was involved in the publication of one of Berger's recent books, so of course they had it in stock. A truly superb bookshop, for new books, stocked with a highly discerning eye.

My friend Sharon brought me here and she is an avid reader. If you love interesting books, this is a treasure trove with books covering a whole multitude of subjects. We snagged one of the little tables and went for alternatives to the disappointingly absent carrot cake. We chose the intriguing courgette and lemon curd cake as well as the mixed berry cheesecake The courgette and lemon curd cake was great - a subtle hint of courgette so as not to be too vegetabley but lovely and moist with more dominant lemon flavour. The mixed berry cheesecake was nice but more conventional Sharon was intrigued enough to try and recreate the courgette cake at home, always a sign of a good dish.
