The great sense of community is one of the main reasons we love this school. If you are looking for an education rooted in spiritual growth in addition to academic and social growth, this is the school. My oldest mentioned the other day how happy he was that he graduated from here and he really appreciated his experience. He loved the public speaking opportunities and creative projects. Having grown up attending Catholic school, I knew I wanted my kids to have the same faith-based education. After looking at various Catholic schools in the area, St. Mary's was a stand out due to its amazing community and the class sizes that allow for true personalized learning. The teachers are tapped into the uniqueness of each of their students and help foster their desire to learn. They support not only their students, but also their families along the way. My daughter is in first grade and has had so many wonderful opportunities, thanks to her teachers. She's been able to practice public speaking at morning assemblies, enjoys spending time with students in all grade levels in the after school program, and has been able to participate in so many fun and exciting activities that have helped her grow as an individual. St. Mary's also has an incredible parent and parish community that supports and volunteers at the school. Our family has 2 children attending St Mary's. We live in Los Gatos and have access to wonderful public schools and an incredible community, and hadn't really considered a Catholic education due to the amazing schools surrounding us. The tight-knit community is really incredible at St Mary. It's so special that all kids across all grades know each other and care for each other. You get to know all the families, all the siblings, and that's so important. They say it takes a village to raise a child and I believe our village now goes so far beyond the teachers and classmates but truly extends to the families and parish. We are so happy with our decision to join the St Mary community - so many fun events for the whole family including the Country Fair, pep rallies, spirit days, sports, and other fundraisers. Not only have my children formed friendships, but we have become wonderful friends with many parents as well. read more

Rick is a local hometown hero priest and does a great job of relating with kids. The school has an endowment of over $1 million and the school continues to fund raise. The campus is nice because it straddles the Los Gatos downtown and the residential areas. Parent involvement is great. read more

We moved to Los Gatos three years ago from overseas, and although we were certainly impressed with what Dave's and Van Meter had to offer (honestly, I can't think of a bad thing to say about either of those elementary schools), once we visited St. Mary school we felt like it had the best shot at being our daughter's home for the next 9 years. The principal, administration, Father Rick, and the parish office were a pleasure to work with. Catholic education aside (we are not particularly religious, but we wanted to expose our daughter and give her the choice), the downtown location is rock solid, with easy trips to Main Street Burgers and just about anywhere else downtown. And we love the idea of school uniforms to take the drama out of it all. The teachers are devoted and caring. The current 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Pratt, is a godsend. She is the perfect balance of strict and friendly. Just like I don't do my own dentistry, I don't manage my child's education so I have very little knowledge regarding whether the curriculum is ahead of or behind other schools, so I will leave that to others to judge. On the positive side of things, at St. Mary school they really do turn children in to more polite, caring children than I presume happens at other schools. Yes there are over-hyper, and impolite children here, but regardless of your child's personality, I can say without a doubt they will become more well-mannered and empathetic. That is certainly a strong focus of the school. They do have a few too many half-days off, but the on-site after school care program (called "Cougars Corner" which is a little hard to say without chuckling) is very good and run by two excellent, caring women. The school lunch program is a bit of a hot mess- which is understandable with only 300 or so students to feed, many of whom bring their lunches. There are 3 days of hot lunch (very healthy but not too tasty), and two days a week of other fundraiser meals, and then milk and ice cream through the school. It is all done through different vendors and it got confusing enough so that we just kind of threw in the towel and now pack lunch daily. What we absolutely LOVE about the school though is the community of the parents. Other schools cannot hold a candle to the tight-knit parental community of St. Mary school. Yes, we are asked to volunteer a certain amount, but about 20% of the parents go well, well beyond the bare minimum and I have been lucky enough to spend a lot of time with them and consider many of them to be among our best friends. That leads to weekends together and even tighter bonding with the kids. If you can make the time to invest in getting to know the parents of your child's classmates, St. Mary's is the place to go. read more

St. Mary's is a fantastic school. I have two children that attend and they are both thriving academically. The new principal, Monica Hernandez, knows every student's name and is a great principal. I love how nurturing the staff is, and of course that they provide a religious foundation for the children. I am writing this review after being at St.Mary's and can honestly say it has been a great experience and would highly recommend the school to others. We have 4 kids, the 4th one will soon be at St.Mary's. When we started searching for a school for our kids, we went back and forth between public and private, then which private school. We looked for quiet sometime, attended various open houses, talked to many parents and teachers and finally made our decision on St.Mary's. What drew is initially to the school is the community and the environment that was fostered in the school and the families attending the schools. It really felt like the right community to have our kids grow up and learn in. After the initial draw what has kept us as the school is the great educational program. The teachers are very involved and pay attention to the needs of the kids. We feel like we are getting the best of all worlds at St.Mary's, between education, community and spirit! read more

I currently have one child that attends St Mary's with a second coming next year. My child was behind in reading coming into 1st grade. The school jumped on that and provided an excellent reading specialist and we are right back on track. All the teachers are very dedicated and hard working even though their salary may be less than at a public institution. I genuinely see the teachers are their for the right reasons. I rarely write these type of reviews however felt compelled after reading the absurd comments. The children at St Mary's are NOT bullies nor spoiled. When you here "it takes a village to raise a child" well that is what you get at St Mary's. All the parents look after each other children. But you do have to put the effort in to be involved. With busy schedules it is hard to be involved, however if you are involved your child and your family will benefit with life long friends. The kids are taught respect and discipline, still say the pledge of allegiance, and are taught hard work. Those people that I have heard complain about the school it's been about very minor things that are far worse in the public schools. The others that complain, like the commenter, are probably jaded and have other things going on in their lives that have nothing to do with the school. Overall I would highly recommend this school!! Love St. Mary School in Los Gatos! We have been a part of this community for over 6 years. We really appreciate the faith based education our son received here. Students begin the day with prayer and the pledge of allegiance, love this part of the 'old school' tradition. The classrooms and teaching model are not 'old school' at all. The classrooms have ipads for the students and in Junior High all students used laptops extensively along with current classroom technology. Our experience with the teachers was amazing, they really cared about student progress both academically and socially. The classes also do several outreach projects, allowing the kids to grow their social responsibility. During our time at St. Mary the community funded and built a new state of the art Junior High and library building, definitely another plus. The science lab is fantastic and doubles as the robotics lab as well. Also offered are no-cut sports for grades 5 plus. read more

I have been a member of the ST MARY'S community for 20 years. Recently a new leader of the leader of the school has come around. He and the staff of the school have made it a bitter experience to send my child there. I have had 3 other kids go K-9. The oldest one was not affected by recent said changes but my second was pinned down by administration as a "bad kid" I do not recommend this school. I have poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into this place and I wish daily I could receive every penny back. It was a waist of my kids education. My eldest is struggling in high school because of the poor math and science programs. Not to mention attending catholic high school is not a given after attending SM as it was promised when we first joined. I cannot believe the place I once called home is now my Hell. Church is not something I look forward too. I really mean this from the bottom of my heart, Los Gatos has better schools, please attend them. Don't come here, save yourselves while you still can. Another important factor of this horrible place is the parental drama. It is a rich lady overload. Cars and purses control everyones minds.. its TOO much. Honestly my kids to this day refer to this place as a bubble. Where everyone is white, well off and perfect. Not a good environment for a child to learn about the world. Donors are preferred over those with economic disadvantages. St Mary's has become a train wreck so please save yourself and don't attend. read more
