300th review. A…read moreBeautiful Old Church St. Anne's Church first opened up in 1904. The exterior is light grey brick and you can notice it's steeple from miles away. On the inside the pitched ceiling with the stained glass windows and a beautiful altar make an awe inspiring view. They also have an old fashioned pipe organ which is still in use today. The congregation has definitely changed over the years since I have been living in the area as has the neighborhood. Since 1997 the parish has held a festival every July. It is the third weekend in July and occurs during the Novena to St. Anne. All ethnicities of the parishioners are reflected in the festival from Italian ( you have to try Sister Alberta's zeppoles), Filipino dishes, Spanish and of course the good old American hotdog which you can chase down with ice cold beer. They also run a 50/50 and have some games of chance in Centennial Hall. Even though the school has closed this grand old church serves as a beacon to the neighborhood that I call home.

I have attended other ceremonies in different churches around Jersey City but none offer the sacraments the way St. Anne's does. No cellphones were allowed that night which made everyone really pay attention to what was being done/said. The lights were off and we only had our candles lit. It was stunning. I did all 3 in one ceremony by attending the Sunday classes before mass. The church has this lovely historical elegance to it. Even though the Parish staff has changed, they are all still kind. I don't attend church as much as I should but when I do go I prefer the Sunday mass at 10:30. They also offer a Spanish Mass, which is held on Saturdays at 7:00 p.m.

What attracted me to become a parishioner at St. Mary's over other Catholic churches in the neighborhood was the incredibly diverse community. At Mass, there are so many different types of people attending, and I have always thought the parishioners really represent the neighborhood in a wonderful way. In December 2014, St. Mary's celebrated its 160th anniversary. From what I've experienced in the past three years since being a parishioner, the church has gone through an evolution and is continuing to do so in a good way. It was previously a part of the "Resurrection Parish" that comprised of five different churches downtown. Most recently it has become a standalone church due to the others closing or separating. Despite the changes, I think our pastor Fr. Helber, parochial vicar Fr. Eustace, deacons, and parish staff are doing a wonderful job bringing the community together and being extremely welcoming to those who are seeking to be closer to their Catholic faith. St. Mary's has English(8am, 12pm) and Spanish(10am) Masses on Sunday and throughout the week, as well as a Tagalog(9am) Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month. I usually attend Sunday's 12:00pm English mass, which has an awesome contemporary choir. In addition to the services, there are devotional groups to join and religious education classes for children. For the past few months I've been attending a weekly adult education class to learn more about Catholicism which has been pretty great. They also host other events such as retreats, parties, and festivals as well. If you're looking for a new parish to attend, please come and check out St. Mary's... and if you see me there please feel free to say hello! I think their motto wraps up things nicely. "Come and join us and create a Christ-centered community where strangers become friends and friends become family."

I usually go to Sunday 12 pm mass and the Priests who run the mass are fantastic. Their homilies are always inspirational and non-political (which I find it hard to find sometimes now a days.) The music is good and the choir is a little off sometimes, but overall they are very warm and welcoming. They are going to be doing restorations soon, so it seems like they are putting the donations to good use. I enjoy going to Sunday mass and St. Mary's makes it even better.

From the…read moremoment I stepped inside, I was overwhelmed by a deep, calming peace, like I was finally somewhere truly touched by God's presence. Before attending, I knew some of the history and teachings of Orthodox Christianity, but actually being at the church moved me in a way I didn't expect. It genuinely made me want to cry tears of peace and happiness. This is my first time ever walking into an Orthodox Church, and honestly, I didn't know what to expect. But what I found was so much more than I imagined. The iconography inside is some of the most beautiful I've ever seen. Each image tells a story that draws you closer to God in a way words can't. Even coming alone, I never once felt out of place. I feel truly seen, loved, and accepted here, not just by the people, but in a way that feels like God is personally reaching out to me. Every service fills me with hope and comfort, and it's a peace I've been searching for my whole life. I also come to the Orthros service every Sunday, which has deepened my connection and understanding even more. Fr. Nick is amazing and very welcoming. His church feels like a home and he feels like a spiritual father to me. Becoming a catechumen soon means everything to me because I finally feel like I'm stepping into something real, something holy, something that's healing my soul. [In 1888 a letter was written to Bishop Wigger to establish a German Catholic Church in Bayonne.] St. Henry was established in 1889 with 50 families of Bavarian descent. The parish currently serves approximately 1,900 families. The church, of modified English Gothic design, began construction in 1912 and was completed in 1915. The beautiful and ornate interior and exterior of the 100 year old structure has been meticulously repaired and restored in recent years."

Everyone was so nice! Each priest approached us after the mass to chat. Many of the people there hung around after mass to chat with each other. It was evident that this church has a strong sense of community among its members and we loved that!!! We've joined the church, which was a simple process and are now going through the prewedding process. I will update my review after we have been regulary attending for awhile, to provide more feedback about the church and events! I did want to note that the parking here is great! There is a side parking lot and ample on street parking available too. The church is also very easy to navigate if you are handicapped/ in a wheelchair. I noticed ramps and the doorways are wide.
