I called the parish and was given the new address. As we drove up the parish was beautiful. We were excited to see what it looked like inside. We attended the 12:30pm mass in Spanish and we loved it. The design was amazing. The priest was great. Everyone was friendly. All around a good experience. So happy to have found a great parish our first time around. Now to book kids for catechism classes. Well, when you're in the process of moving to a new community, clothes are literally going to be "between homes". My wife was pretty hurt by this. Also, the establishment referred to me as "Jim" on the day that we visited, even though he and I had exchanged e-mails the previous night where my name "John" was clearly specified. Finally, the establishment thought that it was laughable when I had trouble remembering my anniversary date. My advice? Shop around for a true Christian environment.

Visiting St. Anthony's Monastery in Arizona truly feels like being transported to Greece. One of the most surreal and meaningful experiences was visiting the tomb of Agios Ephraim and having the opportunity to pray next to him. It was incredibly moving and something I'll never forget. Be sure to plan ahead for the dress code. Men must wear long pants, long-sleeve shirts, and fully covered feet. Women should wear a head scarf covering their hair, long skirts or dresses, long sleeves, and nothing too tight or form-fitting. If you don't have the appropriate clothing, the monastery has garments available to borrow, which is very helpful. The grounds are gorgeous, and there are so many special touches throughout the property. Be sure to stop for a refreshing Greek vegan freddo cappuccino and their fresh ginger lemonade! The monastery store also has beautiful icons, along with freshly picked and dried fruits and nuts from the trees grown right on the property. A truly peaceful, beautiful, and unforgettable experience. If you're in Arizona, this is absolutely worth visiting.

Since I had an…read moreamazing experience visiting several Orthodox monasteries overseas, I was interested in visiting one in the U.S. Visitor hours are from 10:30am to 2:30pm everyday. Dress code is strictly enforced. If you do not have one, they will ask you wear one of their clothes. I heard monks speak English, that's when I remember I was in the United States, not overseas somewhere. That's how this place made me feel, I felt like I was visiting a foreign country. It's beautiful inside and outside. I recommend visiting in a cooler month. I was pretty hot walking outside in a long dress and scarf around my hair. Feeling I get once I stepped inside was something I cannot describe. I went with a group of friends but I think I want to go alone next time to fully feel what this place has to offer.

Friendly people and I attended until one Sunday when I was very disturbed by a particular sermon that I viewed in a series about touchy subjects. At the end of the sermon the pastor claimed that the Bible never said that homosexuality was a sin. Semantics, because the act is clearly described in the Old and New Testaments and punishment resulted. In an age where inclusiveness is considered progress, Paul's advice for believers to stand their ground regarding the Gospel seems much more appropriate...Peaceful coexistence yes, approval no. One must identify a sin in order to repent of it and be righteous and holy. A basic Christian doctrine.
