My German ancestors came over during the establishment of Nebraska, laid their roots here, and actually were one of the founding families of this church. Generations of my ancestors lay here to rest in the cemetery too. Waltke, Menninga, Aden, and Johnson are those among my late relatives. : I am adopted. I met my birth family 5 years ago, and when I met my birth mother, she told me about Nebraska and this particular church. She told me how her mother's family immigrated from Germany in 1869 and landed in Gage County, Nebraska. Considering I was born and raised in Tennessee, I had absolutely no clue I had roots in Nebraska. Learning all this was a bit of shock. A bigger shock was coming to this magnificent church in the middle of no where. It is so lovely, well preserved, and clearly still has an active congregation. When we visited the church, it was during the middle of a week day. It is 2 stories high with a lower level and then a balcony that over looks its grand sanctuary. The stained glass windows are absolutely stunning. I'm not sure if they're original to the 1874 construction, but they're very beautiful with Jesus on them. The front of the sanctuary is very ornate. It has the pastor pit that overlooks the congregation, and a pipe organ that has the pipes reaching up towards the ceiling. All is very well kept and maintained. After touring the church itself, my birth mother led me slightly down the road to their cemetery where many of my late relatives are buried. On the grave stones you'll notice a great portion of them are engraved with German. I really wish I knew German so I could have translated and understood what they said. The newer graves had English. With my ancestors that are laid to rest here, they mainly consisted of German. I really appreciated the grave yard visit. I was able to connect names with pictures that my birth mother had shown me. There are many names that were recycled from generation to generation in my family, so to see that 2 Marie's with different last names rested in the same place was interesting to me. I literally had 4 generations here from my mother's side. To think that at one point they attended this church. They were baptized, married, and had their funerals here. I truly felt a connection to my roots and hope to visit Zion Lutheran again soon. I'd love to come worship here one Sunday. Hopefully it will happen!

My father and mother were always very involved in Sunday School and confirmation here. Sadly 19 years ago my mother's funeral was held here and sadly on Saturday, so was my father's. That is the sign of a great church and one that I have been a part of for the Lord Jesus Christ and the people who are here are so inviting and welcoming and I have become very good friends with the people here... They don't look at me differently from themselves and that brings me so much comfort and confidence in the Lord and to help others to spread his message of love and acceptance!! I have been taught to embrace people and their differences and I am more likely to run towards the one that is in a wheelchair than the one who is standing on their own two feet... That is because I was born disabled and I have always looked at the world differently and I have never felt accepted by others, until last year.... I recently switched to Candlewood when my boyfriend proposed to me. My fiancé was committed to serving this church. Since we were engaged, I knew that we would be getting married and would both need the same church home, so I started going to Candlewood with him and felt very welcomed. The Candlewood website is absolutely amazing (my now husband is on the website development team for the church) http://www.candlewoodchurch.org/. He also plays the drums in one of the worship bands. I love watching him play Sunday morning and seeing his heart for God and the joy he has while serving. We then started premarital counseling with the pastor and his wife. It was a great time to get to know them since I was still pretty new to the church, and for them to get to know us better. Through marriage counseling, we didn't experience any surprises or things we didn't know about each other. Going through it was helpful because it reassured my fiancé and I that we were really meant to be. Some of the topics were, the meaning of marriage, in-laws, emotional temperament, children, finances, etc. In that time, we also joined a couples lifegroup, which is just a group of 5-8 couples who get together every other week outside of church. We have done numerous things with our lifegroup: bible study, BBQ, movie nights, Polish Festival, CWS, outreaching events, etc. In the transition to Candlewood, I have felt very welcomed. I know that this church is a Christ centered church dedicated to serving the Lord and doing His will. They have a solid children's ministry, talented praise bands, pastors who speak truth, friendly attendees, and Panera bagels and pastries served with coffee before every church service. I would recommend Candlewood to anyone in the Omaha-Metro area seeking a church home.

She barely wanted to give us food, saying that because we're from Iowa, from where we drive almost an hour once a month for this help, well, you see, it's things like this that make one disappointed in the church. We should help our neighbors no matter where they're from, so we felt very bad at this evangelical church today. Listen, God is watching what you do here on earth. The sermons are engaging and often contain many elements of humor, but at the same time are very scripturally-grounded and motivate spiritual growth. The live band consists of very talented musicians and does a fantastic job at providing an environment of worship. Disclaimer: if you're looking for a church that just sings Hymns and is more "traditional" in worship style, this may not be the Church for you, and that's OK! I personally prefer having a band and singing songs in more "modern" language that I can better relate to in worshipping God, but I certainly recognize there are people who prefer it differently. One of the best parts of this church is the fantastic kids' program called "StoneBridge Hollow." Available at all service times, it allows for parents to securely check in their children and take them to a class that will provide age-appropriate (and fun!) learning resources while parents can attend the service. Some parents still choose to take their children to the services with them, and they are more than welcome to do so. But for those that want to utilize the kids' program, it is a fantastic way for your children to learn and grow in a safe environment. (All volunteers in SB Hollow are background-checked.) In my opinion, this is a church for all different kinds of people: for those who have been Christ-followers for a long time, for those who haven't been to Church in a long time, for those who maybe have never stepped foot in church, and probably just about any other situation. People here will welcome you, no matter your background. I'd encourage you to check it out, and if it doesn't seem like a good match, there are a lot of other great churches in the Omaha area so hopefully you will find one that is a match for you!
