My husband and I attended a church that left me feeling down. The people were wonderful, but I…read morewasn't learning from the sermon and felt like the message became so focused on "eternal life" that I was gaining no insight on how to handle what we faced each day. We tried a couple local churches--each with very nice people, but we chose to stay at South Haven ... here's what we experienced: First visit impression: We were greeted at the entry door by Tim, who held the door for us. He asked if he could help us, and then took the time to show us what adult Sunday school classes were available and where. We tried a class he recommended after attending the 9am "Traditional" worship service. Additional visits: We came back! Upon entering the building, we again were greeted by Tim, who recommended 9 am Sunday School classes (several are geared to specific age-groups) as we wanted to try the 10:30 "Contemporary" worship service. Additionally, the church had collected and was delivering "Bags of Blessings" to local families to provide for a nice Thanksgiving meal. We really liked the idea that the church was giving directly to the local community. On our 3rd visit, we found a 9 am Sunday School class where we have breakfast-type snacks, share our prayer requests and praises, learn and have fun fellowship activities. The diversity of people and their life experiences along with the teacher make for a very interesting and informative class. We enjoyed the music in the 10:30 contemporary service, and appreciate that traditional hymns are occasionally included. There are many reasons we chose to stay. The pastoral staff is knowledgeable and reachable. I feel comfortable meeting with any of them to share a concern. We found the majority of the congregation warm and welcoming, and the few who seemed distant warmed up very quickly with a pleasant greeting. The sermons teach Biblical solutions to everyday problems. If you're looking for a church home, this is a great church to try. Just let someone at the door know you're new or it's your first visit and you'll be well taken care of! I needed to find someplace that was uplifting and reminded me to have hope. The first banner I saw inside was "HOPE," a major focus of the ministry. We're really happy to make South Haven Church our home! One more thing...while the recording quality isn't perfect, we LOVE that we can watch our church service live via Facebook when we can't be there. We've watched while on vacation and can watch at a later time or date when needed. Since the sermons are often sequential, this is an excellent service!

I want to make this review as fair as possible. This church, as a whole, made us feel so…read moreuncomfortable we had to leave during worship. A couple of people greeted us and were so sweet. We really appreciated that. The side looks and stares we got was a first from a church for us. It was as if all eyes were on us as soon as we walked in the door and people literally just lingered and stared, some with not-so-nice expressions on their face. Did I mention we are a mixed race couple? I hate to say that's why, but I know it is. There was absolutely no diversity in the entire church (everyone is white). That issue aside, we stood and worshiped along with the off beat, off key songs that were being performed from the stage. I told my husband later I felt embarrassed for the men on stage because they were so bad...HOWEVER we know that's not the point of worship and would never rate a church based on their ability to sing and play instruments. This is just something to expect if you're looking for a church where you can sing out loud, clap to a beat, or get lost in a loud worship (this isn't the place for those things). I believe there was mainly good hearted people there. Several people looked as if they were recovering from a drug or alcohol addiction, so good for them for being there. (I overheard a couple talking about it in a group of friends who was recovering himself so this isn't an assumption) My rating mainly reflects 1) lack of diversity 2) the horrible uncomfortable feeling we had the entire time we were there due to several people of the congregation shooting us glares/stares and 3) it was small, but not the cleanest place *again, we did not hear the message because of the events leading up to the sermon. So this in no way reflects their teachings. KIDS: We walked through the Kids place first and it looked so clean and spacious. We don't have kids to put there but the young men working helped us find the right door and if I checked it out more I may have been comfortable leaving my child for an hour just based on the way it was set up (:
