My father-in-law grew up in this neighborhood and attended this church since birth. He built his home across the street and attended mass every morning before he started his work day as a roofer. For many years, when the church struggled financially he did all their roofing repairs for free and did so gladly. When they ran a financial campaign to raise funds for big improvements they gave the roofing job to a big roofing company, which I thought was sad, but he never gave that a thought. He just really loved his church and his faith. I was not raised catholic but when we married I chose to offer having a priest come to my church to help cement our marriage vowels and to respect my husband's parents. Despite swearing I would never have a family member sign a form stating I had never been married previously and having to attend those useless marriage classes, I was forced to do so and I agreed. The Sunday before my wedding my mother-in-law told me that the bulletin announced the priest who was to officiate at our wedding the next weekend was moved to another church. I spent 4 days trying to get the Diocese tell me who was going to take our vovels and finally I spoke with a priest who made it clear he did not want to do our wedding but was doing so under duress. He came to the church, never spoke to us, and left without a word. I guess it served me right for thinking I was being respectful to my in-laws since their faith was so very important to them, but very disappointing that the church and the Diocese thought so little of us that they couldn't even be bothered to notify us of this important change. We still attend the bizarre every year despite how the Diocese screwed over the church and the community by forcing them to take on a stupid name and then stealing all the funds they had raised to keep their school operating for the families and the neighborhood. The church still tries to be strong despite the lack of positive support by the Diocese. They even moved the church office out of the neighborhood. Makes me glad I never chose to change my faith when I married. But, again, the church is a lovely building in a beautiful neighborhood filled with kind, faithful parishioners. read more
