As I was sitting this morning knitting, I got to thinking about how far I've come. I've been…read moreknitting for about 25 years and crocheting since I was 11 years old--my sister-in-law taught me how to crochet. For years, I stuck with the basics--blankets, scarves, and simple patterns. I would look at all the beautiful sweaters, socks, and tops, read through the patterns, and then skip right over them if I saw stitches like intarsia, short rows, or knit one below. Then it hit me--if you don't jump in and try new techniques, you're never going to make those beautiful things. I realized I was limiting myself by being afraid of what I didn't know. So I decided to go for it. I signed up for the sweater and sock class at Hank's, learning two new things at the same time--yep, I was like, "let's do this!" The support there has been amazing. The staff and other knitters are so encouraging. Even when I made the same mistake ten times, no one ever got frustrated--they were always there to help. And guess what... I DID IT! I made a hoodie for my son, and he loved it. Seeing how happy he was made me so proud--and now I need to make one for my other son! And if I need help, I know they'll be there with open arms. I have grown so much in my knitting because of the encouragement from Hank's staff and the community there. I've also made so many knitting friends through their events--especially Fiber Night, which they hold the last Friday of every month. It's so much fun, along with their trunk shows and just spending time in the shop knitting and talking. It means so much to have a place where you can go, be yourself, and be surrounded by people who love the same craft you do. The support and welcoming atmosphere at my local yarn store truly make all the difference. So if you're like me--skipping over beautiful patterns because of one "dreaded" stitch you think you can't do--jump. Take that next step. YOU CAN DO IT! This place is great: a huge selection of vibrant cotton fabrics all perfectly arranged by color value and theme. There's even a special little room where everything is discounted! This place is packed from front to back with some of the most gorgeous colors/designs you've ever seen and likely won't see elsewhere. On top of the amazing fabrics are the services: they will use a long-arm to quilt your sandwich (that makes perfect sense to quilters)! For a nominal fee based on size, you can flip through a BINDER filled with options, and the turn around time is great. If you need something quicker, just pay an extra fee to get bumped to the front of the line. These ladies have your back I've been there when it's slow )and just enjoyed chatting about my projects and perusing fabrics), and I've been there when it's jumping (they teach classes and have a lovely group of older ladies who giggle the place up as they work). The place is covered with amazing quilted projects/tapestries on the walls, and every time I visit I spend more than I should. I'm heading back out there this weekend to pick up a few quilting projects, so I'll be sure to attach pictures soon. In the meanwhile, treat yourself to a relaxing afternoon )whether you're a quilter or not), and just wander around this place so you can oooo and ahhhhh at all the pretty colors. Pro tip: Stitches is in the Glendale Pavilion, which is a series of quaint little shops and eateries. Build time in your schedule to wander around after visiting Stitches. Grab a lemon bar at the bakery around the corner (delicious), sip a glass of rosé at the wine bar (great service), or my personal favorite...stop in at Meritage for some of the most delectable food you've ever had. I'd recommend the scallops. P.S. if you were a Joann's devotee, you'll likely notice the prices are a touch higher here at Stitches, BUT keep in mind this is not a chain, it is independently owned, and these ladies sources their own fabrics quite deliberately.

True to form, they offer much of the same kitchy nick-nacks many of the locals might try and sell you in Arusha except at better prices! The shoes as soon as you walk in are probably the one exception to this which I found to be more expensive. In Tanzania these same shoes cost about $3.00 with bartering. However, they are unique and one of kind so spending a little extra might be worth it. The clothes selection in the back has quite an array. Sadly, most of them are not truly authentic. The ones that are truly Aftrican style will cost you upwards of $80-100 but they are beautiful, yet not well made. Overall, the gifts are unique and truly from Tanzania or Kenya. You can easily find something for anyone you might be shopping for, including yourself. If nothing else, its fun just to walk around and look at the stuff.
