I have only ever had to be admitted into a hospital like this one time, I will never forget how badly you are treated, the nurses where so mean to you, you would think that I was being sick on purpose, I had come off some medication I was on to fast and it caused problems with the way my brain functioned, the dirty most grotesque looks I used to get of the nurses, they take your possessions away without even explaining to you why they are being taken. I am sure a criminal would get much more respect than a person who is sick in a hospital like this. They say the stigma around mental health has to be tackled, it first has to be tackled in places like this. Those nurses where the most ignorant and most uncompassionate people I have ever met, I went and made a complaint to the manager of St Vincent's Hospital, and I asked him that I would like to ask the nurses that when they went for the job, did they not realise they were going to be working in a mental hospital as they were so disgusted by the unusual behaviour, he said to me, that there was no excuse for unusual behaviour, regardless of a mental health problem, seriously how do these people get the job, its so shocking. The Dr that I had one of the top Drs that works in St Vincent's was slagged me off about my past history years before and insulted me so bad, but at the time I couldn't function to well so I wasn't in a position to be able to complain. Please never put a family member in a place like this, I am well now and working full time, but have the worst memories about what I experienced, i try to warn people to look after their mental health or they will end up in a hell hole like this place. I was in there with Heroin addicts who absolutely terrified me at the time, I have nothing against Heroin addicts honestly, but to put a sick person in with them is very cruel, they really frightened me. My story was an absolute horror story, I have never felt suicidal, the only time I have thought about suicide is when I came out of that horrible place and started to get well and realized where I had been and how badly I had been treated. There is a DCU report on the Amnesty Website, and 58.4% report being mistreated by mental health professionals, I would say that figure is so much higher, as a lot of people are not in a position to complain....here is the link....https://www.amnesty.ie/sites/default/files/file/MentalHealth/Final%20DCU%20discrimination%20report%20Dec%202010.pdf read more
