We made reservations online. Upon entry, you'll check in and pay at the gift shop in the rear of the estate. Lindsay was very helpful. Inside the gift shop, there's wonderful items for serving tea and historical books on area mansions. Our wonderful docent was Faith. She was so passionate and highly knowledgeable of all the estate decor and family history. Think Faith is one of the best docents ever! The tour group starts out in a very low-keyed way. During that time, you're learning about the history of the estate in a fun way. Out of nowhere, the Gilded Age Opulence appears. YOU'RE WOWED! Unfortunately, Staatsburgh doesn't receive the accolades like the other well known area mansions. If you're going to see one estate in the area, make it Staatsburgh!

There is a smaller unpaved road that leads to the carriage house and around to several gardens and eventually up to the front entry way of the mansion. Unfortunately, I have recently felt uncomfortable there…read more Whenever I walk in, the same person at the front desk is always complaining to a colleague about another colleague (this is every time I walk in) while still wearing gloves and a mask. It just isn't the most welcome place that it used to be. It's almost like your intruding on their (inappropriate) colleague conversations, instead of the warm welcome I used to get when I entered.

I was welcomed to town and received a helpful Welcome Bag. I was able to quickly sign up for my card and then I was easily able to use the e-catalog (after a brief tutorial from the staff). The library is clean, well maintained and felt very "community minded". Though the range of books is small anything you are looking for can easily be requested from their library system. Coming from a very large library system where no one ever looked me in the eye much less greeted me by name - this library rocks! As a bonus, they were having a book sale in their basement and it was a great place to pick up a few books I had been looking for while supporting this great community resource. Bravo Beekman Library!

It's a…read moretwo-lane bridge, with a speed limit of 35 carrying a decent amount of scenery, which is enjoyable. Traffic isn't too bad at all, unlike the Mid Hudson Bridge. Here in there, traffic will occur. In my experience, going eastward, the stop light at 9G can be backed up. It moves along pretty well, causing no concerns. The electronic tolling definitely brings speed, which is a huge plus. For great travel convenience, this is the bridge to take.

Back then it was a good half-hour drive in either direction to find a bridge, so this was definitely a useful addition. A small toll of $1.50 to cross ($1.25 with E-Z Pass), but only if you're going eastbound. We were westbound today so no toll! Woot, woot! Though officially the Kingston-Rhinecliff bridge, it is actually named after George Clinton, New York's first Governor, fourth Vice President of the United States and a resident of the Hudson Valley. I have to say that the Elting Memorial Library, New Paltz's town library, is perhaps the best library we've visited in New York to date! The building looks unassuming from the outside, with the dainty white exterior blending perfectly into the quaint downtown setting that would fit seamlessly into a set for a community theatre production of "The Music Man". But step inside, and you'll find shelves upon shelves of a vast selection of fiction and nonfiction, plus ample seating on cozy chairs and couches to curl up and read the day away! The folks that work at this library are some of the friendliest we've met in all our journeys, and be sure to snap a picture with the moose mascot before you leave! If you're anything like us and love the experience of visiting a great library, no trip to New Paltz is complete without a trip to the Elting!

This marker is located in the parking area of the Stormville Rest Area on I-84. I was at the…read morewestbound rest area so it's possible that there is a matching marker at the eastbound rest area across the way. The marker is a bit chipped and faded. The marker reads, "Fishkill was a center of civil and military operations during the American Revolution. New York State's first governing body met in the village's churches during 1776-77 and drew up the first state constitution. "South of Fishkill, centered in the Van Wyck homestead was the largest American army supply depot in the north. Relatively safe from British attack, the Fishkill supply depot included dozens of buildings, shops and warehouses. Its strategic location at the hub of transportation made possible the provisioning of American forces operating over a wide region. The depot also served as a staging area and winter encampment. Washington, Horatio Gates, and other important military leaders were associated with the supply depot and Enoch Crosby, the alleged model for the hero of James Fenimore Cooper's novel, The Spy, was interrogated at the Van Wyck house and imprisoned in a hatter's shop in Fishkill." The marker was erected in 1974 by the New York State Education Department, the New York State American Revolution Bicentennial Commission, and the New York State Department of Transportation. However, wireless speeds are very slow and the library is quite noisy. Better off buying a $2 cup of coffee and going to the Fishkill Starbucks. Edit: Bumped from three to four stars. WiFi speed seems to have improved somewhat (or maybe I'm more inured to the slowness), and I'm kind of used to the noise by now (plus, if BYO headphones and music are good enough for Starbucks, why not here?) [it should be noted that there are some loud day-trader-type assholes at times treating it like their own personal office] Heh, plus they have a Keurig machine where you can buy a cup of coffee/tea/cocoa, a nice touch.

The EF library is nice in that they have the newest paperbacks and hardcovers available, programs…read morefor adults & teens, storytime for the kids, and tables for tutoring. However, due to all of the above, its also the loudest library i've ever been to. Trying to sit and read or study is very difficult as the patrons AND the librarians speak at normal tones, often while on the phone or cellphones. The librarians are helpful and the size of the library is cute but the set-up leaves much to be desired as its impossible to find a quiet corner. I'm giving it 3 stars because of all the activities and programs that are available which make it a great community center; otherwise I'd give it 2 stars for its loud, un-library-like atmosphere.
