Both colleagues were then talking to each in German while myself and my mother figured out the order ourselves. With the only tiny surface available which is inconveniently placed before the card machine, my mother tried to put a lid on her coffee and a rude insensitive customer pushed into her to pay and the coffee spilled all over her hand. The person behind the counter said nothing and only thing she did was hand over a dirty cloth. It was the worst service I have ever had in a cafe, which is a pity because the goods they sell are of high quality.

There appeared to be 2 fairly large tables inside, but since it was so nice outside, these were not used while I was there. It was also fairly stuffy inside since it was summer. Pulpo is self-service; you go inside to order and then take your food/drinks out to the tables. There were coffees, teas, alcohol, and hot chocolate on the menu. It appeared they made their own iced tea as well, although I didn't get to try it. There wasn't really a food menu, but you could see the food offerings in the display case inside. When I was there, they had a selection of sandwiches, salads, and yogurts. They also had a few slices of cake and some croissants. There was a good selection of gelatos, which could be served in a cup or a cone. I got a latte macchiato for 5.50 CHF, which sounds expensive but is about the price of a latte macchiato everywhere else in Basel. It came in a tall glass and with a small amaretto biscotti. Note that there is a 2 CHF deposit that is returned to you when you bring back your dishes; they give you a little token that you return for your deposit as well. They only accept cash. There was wifi; the password was prominently displayed by the cash register. The lady manning the café was friendly and spoke English well. The café is located right along the Rhine and has a great view. There's also a foosball table that's good for families. Not a bad place to stop for a break when you're walking along the Rhine.

I had an exquisite fresh pain au chocolat that was filled with luscious, artisan Swiss dark chocolate. The croissant itself was also covered in a light sugar glaze. I've eaten a lot of fresh French pain au chocolat in my life and none compares to this because of the higher quality chocolate. The orange juice is freshly squeezed. The coffee is quintessential European-doesn't taste like burnt beans nor is it like high octane diesel (is it clear I detest American coffee?) Everyone loved their breakfasts. One friend had an egg salad sandwich that looked like it was fluffy, deviled with lots of paprika. Another had a pain au raisin. Service was excellent, too. This is worth your visit if in the area.

If you're not familiar with it, it's a golden gooseberry. To be exact, it's liquor-infused golden gooseberry dipped in a superb, no preservative dark chocolate. I swear I thought I died a little eating these decadent nuggets of chocolate fantasy. If Americans think chocolate covered strawberry is the bomb, wait till you taste these. Cost be damned, these taste so orgasmic that after sampling two, we returned and bought a dozen. I kid you not! The sales lady was super nice (when she's not frazzled). We asked about longevity and she replied honestly, no more than 5 days. We also bought a selection from their truffles and a truffle bar (red wine). All the truffles are completely preservative free. Some of their bar types are truffles which are also preservative free. Other bars do have some preservatives. In case you don't know, the vast majority of chocolates in the market have preservatives; that's how they last longer than 3 months. No preservatives chocolates typically have a shelf life of 6 to 12 weeks only. EVERYTHING was consumed in less than 3 days. SO GOOD! Be aware it's not cheap. The guy ahead of us in line bought a big box of 750 gram and paid about US$90 for it. That is love! LOL

Unfortunately, the person behind the counter, and our server, did not speak any English...and we didn't speak German. And the menu was in German. So we really struggled to order our breakfast. But they were friendly, and we did manage to order something that we were okay with. However, in hind sight, we should have just stood at the counter and pointed to something in the display case to get the pastry or egg dish we wanted. Oh well, maybe next time!

They also make Basler läckerli, a specialty in the area, which are small, rather hard spice biscuits with candied fruits.
