The food was fine. I had a pie. It wasnt be best or worst I had. I had hoped for fish and chips but it wasnt on the daily menu. They did have fried halloumi, which covers a multitude of sins. My drink was also good. They seemed fine with people lingering to visit or whatever. Im not sure I would seek it out, but it was perfectly acceptable. Id eat there again.

Service is quick and friendly. I really enjoyed my raven ale pie with the raven ale gravey and extra veggies. The perfect meal! Also enjoyed the free ranger pie, though I'd recommend the raven ale over it. Do not skip the sticky toffee pudding with honeycomb ice cream! It was perfect and my favorite of many sticky toffee puddings that I had in England. Highly recommend if you're in Bath or the surrounding area!

Upon entering the establishment, we were greeted by a young lady who showed us to the table we had booked for dinner. She apparently functioned as a hostess and waitress - but she seemed to seamlessly integrate these two distinct roles. The decor of the pub is pleasant. Subtle interludes of it's long history are ever present - it appears the building itself used to function in an agrarian role. Despite this, though, modern features have been brought in to aid in the comfort of patrons. My wife said the woman's bathrooms had been recently renovated. New benches adorn the front lawn - I'm sure these will be seldom unoccupied during the later summer months. As for the interior, it shows much in the way of recent improvement. A beautiful stone floor is present in the bar area. The dining room is quite simply stunning. An ornate display of various china pieces covers one wall. The floor of the room, an elegantly varnished solid wood affair, makes it feel more a court from many generations past than a dining room of the present. The chairs were remarkably comfortable, and highchairs seemed in no short supply. On to my favorite part - the food. Our waitress, the girl that had welcomed us, came to take our order. I started with the crab cakes and my wife with the smoked salmon and avocado salad. My crab cakes were simply mouth-watering. The chili dressing perfectly complemented the subtle herb essences in the cakes. My wife's salad was also superb - especially if her refusal to give me more than one bite before devouring the rest is any indicator. For our main courses, we had the roast tomato, mascarpone, and rocket pasta and the rabbit pie. The pasta was again to the high degree of culinary excellence we had come to expect from our starters. The pasta itself was well cooked - as were the other fresh ingredients. The rabbit pie, though, was something else. Never have I experienced such gastrointestinal euphoria. The rabbit meat was cooked to a perfect tenderness, and the airy pastry that was layered on top was delicious. The vegetables and potatoes that accompanied both meals were fresh and well prepared - an unbeatable combination. We opted for the chocolate torte for dessert. The rich chocolaty flavors of the middle layer, accompanied by the creaminess of the sandwich layers, was heavenly. To put it simply, it rivaled many of the tortes I have sampled in continental Europe, including Sacher Torte in Vienna and Gateau St. Honore in Paris. In all, I would rate this pub very highly. The decor, combined with the history of the building and the superb nature of the food are everything a pub could hope to be. A variety of beers and ales are served in addition to the Wadsworth range, ensuring that even patrons with the most astute preferences can be easily pleased. I have encouraged friends and family who leave nearby to visit - I know we will next time we're over.

Although we were in a late lunch sitting and the roast beef had just run out (not through the door!), we were substituted with equally delicious thick slices of beef with all the trimmings. The potatoes were crispy and delicious and the homemade horseraddish sauce was the creamiest I'd ever tasted. The landlady, Britt, popped over several times to the table to talk to us about the food and was more than willing to accomodate a couple of food allergies amongst the diners on our table (coeliac and nut allergy). The atmosphere inside is just as lovely as the rolling country landscapes outside and the roaring open fire was perfect on the frosty day we visited. The rustic oak style is more country farmhouse than dark dingy pub and the owner's spaniel could even been seen in the corner chewing on a bone. For a table of 4 people (without wine) it was £120 for 2 courses and drinks. It's really off the beaten track but definitely worth tapping into the satnav for a visit any day of the week as I'm sure their other offerings are just as good as the Sunday lunch offer.

There was barely anyone in there by the time we arrived. It was 3 PM. The bar area is the first thing you see, but I asked where the coolest place to sit was. The bartender told us to go to the back room, where it was reasonably comfortable with ceiling fans. If we wanted to order, we had to order at the bar. I guess that was because it was between lunch and dinner. No biggie. The food was good, and the beer was great. I wanted something cold and dry. I was recommended a Japanese beer called Asahi. Wow! So good for a hot day!!! I have to find this in the US. I ordered the Cod Goujon Sandwich. Very crispy, and it came with some chips/fries, and onion rings. I thought I saw a group of women at another table order steak fries/chips, but I must have been mistaken. I so wanted steak fries! Mine were skinny. In hindsight, I should have just gotten the fish & chips because the bun was a bit much. Basically, the same meal but without the bun. I had to ask for extra tartar sauce because the sandwich was too dry without the amount they put on. Overall, I loved this place. Quirky, old, and the bathrooms are a must-see, with the old pipes and faucets. I asked the bartender how old the building was, but he had no clue.

I love small, ambient, out-of-the-way places frequented by locals, and the Coeur De Lion fit the bill perfectly. Although we sat outside in the (unseasonably warm and sunny) April air, with a light breeze gusting through the rather narrow alleyway, my traveling companion and I became absorbed in the delicious flavors of our dishes, our engaging conversation, and the pleasant warmth of a perfect spring afternoon, tuning out the foot traffic (and most of the rest of the world) behind us. The best Shepherd's Pie I had the privilege to enjoy during my stay in the UK, and don't kid yourself, I ate a lot of Shepherd's Pie. Looking a bit like an over-sized, savory cupcake, resting on a nest of mashed potatoes and drizzled in gravy, I couldn't have been more satisfied with its crisp, flaky crust and tender, lean cuts of meat. The Coeur De Lion is small enough that you could blink and miss it, when walking by. Do yourself a favor, and keep your eyes open.
