The Stanley Theatre is designated by the City of Vancouver as a heritage building. It's been around 1931, and has been used for movies as well as live theatre. These days you find it putting on productions for the Arts Club Theatre company. Usually some pretty good stuff. However, the architecture is the highlight here. Amazing domed ceiling, seashell lights, geometric patterns. Very fun to catch all the hidden details in here! And I love to catch the sign lit up at night! It has a great street presence.

I've seen some great shows here (ex. Les Miserables, Glengarry Glen Ross, etc) with very talented actors. The stage is set in a way that almost any seat has a good view. I also like the size of the Theatre because it has an intimate feel to it. Last night I saw Angels in America, which did not disappoint. It was a fabulous performance. My only issue is that the tickets seem quite pricey. $49 each for our seats. If you're able to get hold of $29 tickets, it would be more ideal.

I don't know the entire history of the theatre, but apparently it was built in 1938. The Rio is known for screening cult classic movies and live shows, and in 2012, it fought the outdated BC Liquor board so that movie theatres could serve alcohol -- a big win! In the past, I have gone to a handful of shows (mostly movies showing at the Vancouver International Film Festival), but I didn't go often for two reasons: many of the movies I was interested in started way too late for me (such as at 9:30pm or 11pm), and years ago, I had a really negative experience. I don't recall when the incident happened -- perhaps it was after they had acquired a liquor licence -- but you had to be 19+ to go (that's the legal drinking age here), and while I was much older than 19, apparently I looked young, so I used to get so much shit for my appearance. Shortly before the event, my ID had expired and I was waiting for a new one to come in the mail. In the meantime, I was using my passport as ID. The person at the door was extremely rude and aggressive and made a big deal of specifically asking ME for ID -- from his tone, I think he didn't expect me to be of age. I pulled out my wallet from my purse to grab my ID, then remembered that I didn't have it as it was being renewed, so put it back into my purse and reached for my passport. As I was reaching for my passport, the rude and aggressive employee sneered, "Oh, you forgot your ID, I see, huh?" Yes, even thought this was nearly 15 years ago, I still remember this incident, and it always upset me. The guy was so fucking rude. Also, they used to insist on stamping your hand, and I hate having the inside of my wrist stamped because the ink rubs off on the side of my shirt, so prefer to have the top of my hand stamped. This guy was also rude about this. Anyway, due to events not working with my schedule and my encounter with the rude employee, I had little interest in going to the Rio unless it was for the film festival. However, recently, there have been several events I have been interested in: a screening of The Shawshank Redemption with a Q&A with Gil Bellows in July; a screening of The Room presented by Greg Sestero in August; a screening of Clue in October; a screening of the original Carrie presented by Mike Flanagan in October; and a film festival movie in October. And each time I had a great experience -- no more rude and aggressive employees! The most recent event I went to was John Waters live on December 3. My husband is a huge John Waters fan, so I bought tickets for his show. However, I had only bought the regular tickets, and my husband then told me he would have liked the VIP tickets (better seats, a signed poster, a post-show Q&A). On the Rio website, they clearly state that all sales are final and that tickets cannot be returned or exchanged. So what did I do? Emailed them asking if I could exchange the regular tickets for the more expensive VIP tickets, despite their policy. Their answer was an enthusiastic "absolutely!" and it was easy to exchange the tickets. Amazing customer service! I am a fan of the Rio and I look forward to seeing more shows and events! I loved how they made the classic in to a radio show, it was the perfect choice, I really enjoyed being taken back to an era gone by. The other one was great too, truthful and well preformed. The theatre space sees the audiences seperated into two sides (about 50 seats on each), with the play's action take placing a a comparatively small aisle space in between. The result of this set-up is a heightened awareness of the work's theatricality (one is looking at other audience members, after all), but also a greater sense of involvement, as there is no proscenium or great divide separating audience from actor. The plays presented each season are very well-chosen. The programming always possesses insightful societal relevance or a fascinating explorations of human experience, and almost always manages to do so without sacrificing the humour and delight so crucial to good theatre.

She falls in love with the wealthy handsome owner of the department store where she works. The quality of "It" is being attractive and confident. I can't believe it was released almost a hundred years ago. There was a pre-show jazz performance by the Gatsby Strutters Jazz Band and a lecture about the roaring 20s and Clara Bow's life given by Vancouver Film School's Keith Blackmore. The lecture gave us historical context for the film. This is the first black and white silent movie we have ever watched and it was more entertaining than expected. It's a comedy and the entire audience was laughing out loud. The soundtrack to the film was performed by organist Michael Dirk on the the Orpheum's original 1927 Wurlitzer organ. The music they picked paired very well with the film and added a lot of entertainment value. After the show, there was a fashion show and talk held by fashion historian Ivan Sayers. They brought out a few models decked in flapper era clothing such as loose dresses with a low waistline, tight fitting hats, feathers, sequinned gowns, fans and capes. It was a very unique and educational experience. Definitely an event I would go to again. I have seen other Silent Movie Mondays have more instruments playing, like the violin, cello, oboe, saxophone. That would have enhanced the experience.

Those taps in the bathroom does remind one of British influences. Bar area is efficient and snack choices are perfectly non offensive in terms of scents, esp for intermission noshings. Would love to see decaf coffee on the menu as most shows are mid afternoon or evenings. Makes no sense to not have decaf as an option. Also, enforce no metal water bottles in the music hall. There is always one (or more) getting dropped or accidentally kicked in the middle of a work. There are ways to prevent it and I would respect more venues having a stricter code.

It is *not* a review of The Arts…read moreClub or of the Stanley Theatre.** Roald Dahl is one of my favourite authors, and Matilda is my favourite Roald Dahl book (I've probably read it at least a dozen times), so OF COURSE I had to see Matilda - The Musical. However, I honestly have to say that I didn't care for the musical. The actors and dancers were FANTASTIC - wow, those children have so much talent, it's mind blowing - and Georgia Acken, who played Matilda, was wonderful. Zero criticism on the acting, costumes, or music. But, as a huge fan of the book (and the movie was pretty good too), I was disappointed. I understand adaptions of books can't include every detail, and I'm alright with modifying things for creative or practical reasons, but I didn't feel as if the musical was true to the book (I think the movie did a pretty good job). If I didn't know the story so well, I would have been a little confused and missed out on a lot (my mom, who surprisingly had no idea what the story was about, was confused and didn't care for the musical, either), as I filled in a lot of the blanks from my knowledge of the story. Also, being a musical, singing is the focus, with the story line being secondary, and I felt like they missed out on a lot of the story because they had to fit in so many songs (they just glossed over Matilda's telekinetic powers). I think it would have been better as a play, rather than a musical. One thing that they did do well, and put a lot of emphasis on, was the character of Miss Trunchbull. If you're familiar with Matilda, you know who I'm talking about, and if you aren't, you're missing out - Miss Trunchbull is probably one of the best villains in a novel. The depiction of Miss Trunchbull in the movie was fantastic (amazing acting), and very true to the description in the book, and the depiction of Miss Trunchbull in the musical was spot on as well. Miss Trunchbull was played by John Ullyatt, and OMG, I laughed so hard. The costumes, the acting - it was nothing short of fantastic. Perhaps if Matilda weren't one of my favourite books (children's or adults'), I would have enjoyed the musical more. I would give it two stars, but because of the wonderful acting and the depiction of Miss Trunchbull (which really was the best part of the musical), I'm giving it three stars. I recommend the movie over the musical. [Yelp collections: Plays, Shows, and Musicals]
