Extremely horrible experience please go anywhere else. They are rude and have terrible service. They close their doors way earlier than closing time. Been coming here over 40 years. Good place to go when you need groceries or fishing supplies. Used to it was really your only choice in town. Now you have more options in town and it is over priced but it works if you need a few items quickly. You can get licenses for the beach and fishing here, as well as the mentioned fishing supplies. They have expanded over the years and have clothes and it looks like they took over the old post office and you can get food to eat there. They sell shirts that misidentify the Gulf of Mexico which is sad to a long time resident of the gulf area but the staff was really friendly. Came to the Matagorda, TX area for a little family vacay staying at a cousin's quiet getaway. He suggested coming to Stanley's for a meal but this place is a full blown store and eatery. Lots of stuff to buy down their aisles from souvenirs, minor groceries and fishing gear. Local wines for sale but unfortunately the staff on duty could not tell me how it was but I bought a bottle anyway. Gorda's Grill is located inside and let me tell you if you wanted a place like McDonalds go to Bay City. Otherwise be prepared to wait and I'm telling you good food is worth the wait. For a little over $30 I bought 3 burgers, 3 drinks (no refills), 2 fries and 1 onion rings. Everyone was happy with their food and completely satisfied. I gave four stars because I'm a stickler about people knowing what their products are like that they are selling. More items such as local goods would sell better especially to tourists. read more

bought a gallon of milk and a few onions both were rotten.. I am staying about 5 mins from stanleys.. I called about the 8$ gallon of milk. Was accused of leaving it out but in the end they gave me another gallon.. the onions went in the trash. Good for a fishing license or a beach pass... Don't ever buy groceries there.. Third time to eat at the grille but this time I ate there instead of carry out . I ordered multiple shrimp basket all were short 3 shrimp each . This time I ate there and counted before I ate . I brought to their attn and they said they thought I was getting a po-boy . I was curious where the bread was and better yet I didn't know you got a po-boy with tails on the shrimp . Man, I just had the best ever chicken tender lunch I think I've ever eaten. The general store has a little restaurant in the back. I was deciding between the 1/2 lb cheese burger that looked awesome as it was grilling or the chicken tenders. Oh my gosh they were honestly the best. The French fries were delicious and hot. Stopped to eat at the restaurant, waited for 45 minutes. When I asked if are food was going to be ready soon the girl proceeded to tell me that they are busy and what do I want her to do. I told her, I'm just asking because we have been waiting for 45 minutes, she then very rudely said fine I will just give you a refund. I have been shopping at this store for 25 years. Warning....there may not be a restroom available. Here is the rest of the story. We went to eat at The Grill on a Saturday at 7pm due to their claim the "best burgers around". So while waiting ~30 minutes for our food I needed to go to the restroom. I went into Stanley's and there were 4 cashiers and only one was working. I asked the kid leaned over on the counter watching tik tok if the restrooms were actually closed. I let him know we were eating next door. He confirmed they were closed (reminder 4 cashiers and only one working). I asked him how long they will be closed and he replied until tomorrow. I asked the guys at the grill what they do when they have to go and explained the issue. The only one that would talk said he "holds it until he gets home". I laughed - so you mean to tell me that all 10ish employees on a Saturday night have to "hold it until they get home"? They have a little bit of everything, snacks, drinks, souvenirs, fishing and camping gear as well as beach permits. They also sell gas but you will need to go inside to pay as the pumps aren't set up for credit cards. Stanley's is a Matagorda institution. I've been coming into this store for 51 years with each visit to Matagorda. Since my dad is from Matagorda, I come here several times each year. It is amazing how much stuff they have crammed tightly in every corner. If you need something for the beach or for fishing, there is a good chance you can find it here. They have one small shelf dedicated to produce, I can't say that it is real appealing. Acceptable, but not great. I suppose for being at the end of the road (literally), they can't do a lot better with freshness. They cook fresh fried chicken and a few other goodies behind the counter, delicious and recommended. Sometimes the checkers at the counter are super friendly, other times they seem unhappy to be there. It changes day by day. If you come to Matagorda, stop in here and look around. Burgers are huge! They are also fresh and go down as the best burger I've had in awhile. My kid had the chicken strips and those were pretty good too. The place is busy but they had enough staff on hand to get people in and out pretty quickly. The only downside is the parking, definitely not enough and no place to park a truck and trailer combo. read more

I've been coming to Stanley's since i was a little girl and they have always been the one stop shop in Matagorda. But, since they added a hot deli it has been life changing. The burgers are so delicious I'm sorry i waited so long to try them. They're a 1/2 lb and i stuff myself eating the whole thing every time. I recommend calling in ahead because it can take 15-25 minutes especially on the weekends. My only complaint is that the fries are just meh. Make your own at home and get just a burger.
