In St. John's (in their current location on Water Street), I found the Newfoundland Crafts Council store and had the pleasure of visiting it a couple times during our stay here. The selection did not disappoint, as I came away with a nice forged letter opener from the Green Family Forge (Trinity) and a nice St. John's house magnet from Northeastern Folk Art. I could have easily done more "damage", but it was early in our trip and I needed to pace myself.

This, along with the colors, gives her pottery such a perfect earthy, coastal feel that I absolutely love. It's like I can feel Newfoundland :) She also was very accessible by email and answered all of my questions and gave extra information. She packaged my 5 plates perfectly as well, and they even arrived early. What a happy surprise! I will definitely continue to monitor her shop for more of her amazing pottery!

But here one can find handcrafted items with a St. John's theme, such as slate coasters, sun catches, wine stoppers and even switchplate covers. The St. John's townhouses are worked into many of these items. They also carry calendars and books about Newfoundland. There is also a selection of former independent Newfoundland postage stamps for stamp collectors. The shop is about one block up and two over from the cruise terminal.

We were charged a $40 delivery fee for only a few streets away, that is fine I guess. When we contacted the store only a couple of days after receiving the fridge, we were told we had to deal strictly through the warranty. This was unbelievable to us as we wanted to support local and bought it within our community only to find out this. We have been dealing with Frigidaire for over 10 days now of trying to lock in a service man in our area. We were subjected to a service company in Quebec, Les Ateliers Paquette Inc. I have never been subjected to such an ignorant and rude customer service in my life! We were treated poorly by her right out of the gate, given attitude, talked over constantly to the point we simply hung up! To say we will never make another purchase from our local Home Hardware, is an understatement. The fact that we were simply dismissed after spending over $1000.00 om a new fridge only to be tossed within days, that they can't help us, is pathetic! Poor service all around! My Mother has been stressed out all week and I have been constantly on the phone trying to get her a service man! We finally got one today and surprise, the door is faulty and needs replacing. It should have been taken back the same day we called HH and given a new one. No customer should be subjected to this kind of treatment or service! No one called us back to see if anything was resolved either. Not impressed at all and we will definitely pass this along to our friends, family and our neighbors so they don't make the same mistake.

I thought that the pricing was fair and transparent, even down to whether tax was included or not. I left the shop with a nice set of watercolor cards and a book featuring gorgeous Newfoundland scenery. Like the previous reviewer, I was impressed with the engaging artist/owner (?) who explained the various works of art in an welcoming and friendly manner. I also learned a lot about Newfoundland itself and how to better approach Gayle and my visit. In the end, she was right. Our memories of Newfoundland were the landscape, the people, and the charming towns - as opposed to specific attractions.

They have the requisite St. John's street scene paintings, along with a nice variety of still-life painting, soapstone sculpture, bronzes, etc. I was impressed with the art and even more impressed with the engaging and helpful artist who was on hand to answer questions.
