    Beans with garlic

There are always a few restaurants around town that you mean to check out, but for some reason or another there is not a massive calling. So, they get forgotten. Star House was one of those restaurants for me. Star House has been around forever. So, they must be doing something right. There are always massive lines of people waiting to get in, which usually means that the food is pretty good. But, my thought is that it is just a Yum Cha thing. People love Yum Cha, even if it is just a-ok. My only problem is that the food is just average. The dumpling skins are too thick and the filling is not that flavoursome. The BBQ Pork had too much honey on it, overpowering the taste of the pork. I was really disappointed with that. I love the taste of pork!! But, I must say that the green beans and garlic stirfry was really good. Great flavour and cooked right so it was a little crisp. However, if that is all that I really enjoyed here, well... yeah... everywhere does green beans. The price was good, service was good. Everything was just good. I don't think I will be back in a hurry. Maybe I ordered the wrong dishes, but I can think of three places that surround this place that do better Yum Cha.

Went in for family Yum Cha Lunch on a Sunday and the place was PACKED. Dumplings were delish but service was pretty average - very difficult to get a drink or any additional condiments etc but it's probably worth suffering through as this is generally the trend for service most yum cha sessions. The pork and prawn parcels of goodness were a highlight for me.

A bit of a let down from other reviews on line. The food was average, price was fair. I have eaten better.

Food is yummy but too many people on weekends. I find it very noisy. Price is reasonable, try visiting on weekdays.

Review Highlights - Star House Chinese Restaurant

Star House seems to offer a tiny bit more than the other (admittedly good) yum cha places on Gouger St.

Mekong Thai is pretty great - none of the syrupy, tasteless, oily stuff you might get at mediocre Thai restaurants. The frontage is quite distinctive - gated off by an curlicued iron gate. There is outdoor seating, a nice tiled pergola section with wooden seating and then the indoor area. The decor itself is a little old - nothing special. The service is very friendly and not too invasive. And if you're not eating socially, there is a great big pile of magazines - National Geographics and woman's mags. You can get takeaway here - it isn't super fast - but it is very cheap at lunch time. Eating in is just as good, but a little bit more expensive, especially at dinner. Some of my favourite dishes: tom yum soup (tangy and fresh), beef rendang, massamun (not too sweet, which I hate), and the chicken larb salad. If you're vegetarian, they offer an equally delicious and extensive vegetarian menu - I'd recommend the pad thai.

My friends set me a challenge, find somewhere near Hindley street - not too heavy on price and another friend had a craving for laksa. So then I thought, why not try Mekong Thai, it seem to tick all the right boxes? So after work, my colleagues and I journeyed into town and sat down to peruse the menu, it had your typical Malaysian/Thai dishes but I already knew what I wanted. My friend and I ordered the seafood laksa and my other friend had the pad thai. For a Wednesday night it was fairly busy, there were groups still in work gear, couples and tourists staying at nearby accommodation. You can choose to sit alfresco style in the outdoor area or sit inside and watch the chefs cook your meal through the open view screen. Just a note that if you choose to sit in the outdoor area, yes you can enjoy some people watching but beware the colourful characters down Hindley street might heckle a innocent restaurant patron! We weren't in any particular hurry but it did seem to take an awful long time before our meals arrived. One of my pet peeves is when meals do not come out together and you urge your friends to start their meal while you awkwardly watch them eat. My friend had half eaten her pad thai when our seafood laksa came out, it looked tasty enough but that was the only good thing to report. The taste just wasn't up to scratch. It was way too sweet, there was more beansprouts then noodles, the soup was thin and wait - where was my seafood? I fished around and only scooped out some chicken pieces. My companion returned her laksa back to add some seafood but I ate mine as I had already waited long enough and I was hungry. To be fair, the owner was very apologetic, he explained they had a new chef in training and throughout our dining experience and he was very attentive to our table. However the total service and food experience wasn't the best I've experienced but maybe that just wasn't a good night for them.

It's pretty obvious at night if you were driving to the city. And so, when we passed by it again tonight, we decided to give it a try. U-turn it is. The restaurant walls are painted dark red(both interior and exterior), and the dim lighting makes the ambiance pretty romantic/warm if there's few customers(however, it's not likely, as the place was soon crowded with people). Also ,the place is furnished with lots of Buddhas statues, paintings and mirrors. Tonight we ordered Kow Dom(or boiled rice), Golden wings, spring rolls and Four flavour fish. The fish is basically deep fried breaded fish mixed with broccoli, long bean, capsicum and smothered with the creamy and tangy 4 flavour sauce. Let me see... umm.. I can taste sweet, sour, spicy, and salty! Yum! Overall my experience would be a 3 star because I waited like 20-25 mins for my mains after the entries were served. But for the good cooking and taste of the four flavour fish, it's a 4 star for Tongue Thai'd. YUM. Will return. Edit: Pardon for the lack of pictures, as everything snapped there turns out to be soooo red that I decided not to post it.
