Mekong Thai is pretty great - none of the syrupy, tasteless, oily stuff you might get at mediocre Thai restaurants. The frontage is quite distinctive - gated off by an curlicued iron gate. There is outdoor seating, a nice tiled pergola section with wooden seating and then the indoor area. The decor itself is a little old - nothing special. The service is very friendly and not too invasive. And if you're not eating socially, there is a great big pile of magazines - National Geographics and woman's mags. You can get takeaway here - it isn't super fast - but it is very cheap at lunch time. Eating in is just as good, but a little bit more expensive, especially at dinner. Some of my favourite dishes: tom yum soup (tangy and fresh), beef rendang, massamun (not too sweet, which I hate), and the chicken larb salad. If you're vegetarian, they offer an equally delicious and extensive vegetarian menu - I'd recommend the pad thai.

My friend and I ordered the seafood laksa and my other friend had the pad thai. For a Wednesday night it was fairly busy, there were groups still in work gear, couples and tourists staying at nearby accommodation. You can choose to sit alfresco style in the outdoor area or sit inside and watch the chefs cook your meal through the open view screen. Just a note that if you choose to sit in the outdoor area, yes you can enjoy some people watching but beware the colourful characters down Hindley street might heckle a innocent restaurant patron! We weren't in any particular hurry but it did seem to take an awful long time before our meals arrived. One of my pet peeves is when meals do not come out together and you urge your friends to start their meal while you awkwardly watch them eat. My friend had half eaten her pad thai when our seafood laksa came out, it looked tasty enough but that was the only good thing to report. The taste just wasn't up to scratch. It was way too sweet, there was more beansprouts then noodles, the soup was thin and wait - where was my seafood? I fished around and only scooped out some chicken pieces. My companion returned her laksa back to add some seafood but I ate mine as I had already waited long enough and I was hungry. To be fair, the owner was very apologetic, he explained they had a new chef in training and throughout our dining experience and he was very attentive to our table. However the total service and food experience wasn't the best I've experienced but maybe that just wasn't a good night for them.

It's better than most, if not all eateries on south Hutt. It's not cheap but is very tasty.

Best Thai outside of Thailand…read more I live in the US and was in Adelaide recently. In Portland, Oregon, USA, we have a Thai restaurant almost on every block. There are so many. However, American Thai is designed for the American palate and therefore not subtle. Kin Kin was delectable food presented artfully and no nonsense. The pork belly dish was particularly delectable. If you are in Adelaide and like Thai food, go here!

The only two other customers inside on Wednesday afternoon was a wealthy-looking businessman in a fly suit, and a gorgeous lady wearing a beautiful colourful dress and adored jewellery. So it seems dressy at first, but the next customers that sat outside were just wearing casual jeans and shirt. So l chose: Chicken Cashew Nuts with white rice, and an Oishi Green Tea? All for $12! That was so YUM! Very nice. Very very nice. Everything was perfectly cooked. But please add more chicken next time. I couldn't get enough of it! Thanks! :P

Thai Lucky Bell's chef certainly has his own take on each of the classics, so don't expect the standard Pad Thai or Green Curry. It's a classy establishment with a nice setting and very friendly staff. I love how attentive the waiters were to our needs. It was very refreshing. The food, whilst i had my doubts initially, was to die for. I got the papaya salad for entrée which was just spicy enough to open up my palette and get my taste buds going. For mains i got the Grandma's pork, which were crispy and tastefully fried strips of pork with a gorgeous sweet hoison like dipping sauce. Heaven. Prices were very reasonable as well. The pad thai is an obvious choice, but is simple and delicious. Laksa is also a great option in the cold weather, but I can eat the stuff in any sort of weather. As some of the others have said, the service is a little bit ruthless. This is especially so when the restaurant gets crowded, but they are really friendly if the conditions permit. Of course, good service should be a constant in the hospitality industry, so they may have to work on that.
