Katherine is so informed and encouraging but never pushy. She is low-supply informed. I have primary lactation insufficiency. I had an IBCLC previously that made me feel like I wasn't working hard enough and Katherine never made me feel like it was my fault. She encouraged me that I am doing everything (and more) I can to produce for my baby. We first met Katherine when our daughter was born in 2013. She came to our house immediately and helped me with huge obstacles I was dealing with. Katherine is super knowledgeable, helpful and practical. My son had some health issues and she came in to help plump him up, reduce gas and fussiness and give me breastfeeding tips. All of her info and guidance was helpful and she really stressed good practices for both baby and mom. With her guidance and advice, my son is now on a better weight trajectory and I was able to shorten feeding times and make him more comfortable during feeds. I can't speak highly enough about Katherine! After seeing 4 different lactation consultants (4!) with no answers or solutions to our difficulties breastfeeding, we were desperate for help. I found Katherine online and immediately booked a home visit with her. During the home visit, she was extremely thorough in looking at our baby, and empathetic to the struggles were we having. She was able to identify the issue during the first visit and wrote out an extremely detailed plan for helping address what was wrong. She texted and followed up with us after each visit, and continued to offer support until my baby was exclusively breastfeeding with no issues! I credit my nine month-old's excellent health (he's never been sick and only had a fever once) to Katherine's amazing lactation skills. Although he seemed to latch on properly at the hospital, about one week after coming home I had extremely sore nipples, so much so that the thought of nursing made me cry. I had gotten a ton of breastfeeding information prior to giving birth and for months had applied lanolin to prevent nipple soreness but it didn't work. Before giving up and just opening one of those cans of unsolicited formula samples manufacturers had sent us, I called a certain well known local lactation group for help. When the person called back the next day, she simply told me to keep trying to breastfeed and call again in a few days if I continued to have issues. Really early the next morning, after crying once again when nursing my baby, I recall being very discouraged and sad. I'm a firm believer in the benefits of breastfeeding but felt I was failing miserably. A friend who had met Katherine five years earlier referred me to her and I was pleasantly surprised to get a call back almost immediately after leaving her a voicemail. She came to my house that same day, asked important questions to get to know us, watched me nurse the baby and weighed him. She also provided us with a nursing kit, which gave my sore nipples some much needed relief, while making sure my baby no longer needed to be spoon fed the breast milk I was pumping (to avoid using a bottle and creating nipple confusion). She also recommended herbal supplements to help maintain milk supply and continued to check in on us in the following weeks. For additional background, neither my grandma nor my mom were able to breastfeed and I would have likely gone down the same path had it not been by Katherine's professionalism and kindness. Katherine is amazing and I cannot speak highly enough about my experience with her. Not only is she incredibly knowledgeable, she also about the best cheerleader a new nursing mom could ask for. Helping me through a tongue tie revision, a baby that wasn't nursing efficiently enough to gain weight, and several other obstacles, Katherine was so supportive. My eleven month old is happy, healthy, and still nursing. Katherine was highly recommended to us by our doula. The first few days after our 9-month-old baby was born, he had jaundice and we had give him formula. Because my milk had not come in, I was 'breastfeeding' him 15 minutes on each side, supplementing with formula, then using a breast pump for another 20 minutes. The whole process took 1.5 hours and my son fed every 2 hours. I was left exhausted and in desperate need of help with breastfeeding. During her first visit, Katherine brought her scale and asked us detailed questions about our goals, breastfeeding challenges, and our son's health and weight issues. She also took the time to explained her evaluation process to us, which included weighing my baby before and after breastfeeding. After her evaluation, she worked with us to come up with a treatment plan. She also sent us an email with a written version of the treatment plan, which we truly appreciated. Our brain power during those first few weeks were very limited. We were immediate able to exclusively breastfeed without having to worry if the baby was getting enough. Katherine checked in on us the next day with a phone call and was available to us via phone, text, and email. She made a return visit to make sure that our son was gaining sufficient weight and addressed any additional questions we may have. What I love about Katherine is her professionalism and customer service after the initial consultations, even months after! I have reached out to her several times over the last 9 months with a variety of breastfeeding questions. And each time, she would take the time to understand our issues and help design a treatment plan that would work for us. We hired Katherine when my baby was about a week old since she lost too much of her birth weight and was small to begin with. Katherine came to our house and I felt comfortable with her instantly. She was very professional and nurturing. She helped me with different breastfeeding positions, latching and gave good recommendations for pumping. She also provided a wellness review after our first visit. She also wanted me to keep her updated on my daughter regarding her weight after she was seen by her pediatrician. She went out of her way to ease all of my concerns. She was also available for advise for pumping and going back to work. Katherine deserves more than 5 stars and if I could give her more I would! A little bit backstory about me - I exclusively pumped and bottle fed my first born due to tongue tie and preference of bottle over breast and my second babe instinctively latched on easily at the hospital. I was amazed and happy that there would be no more pumping and was excited to breastfeed. But it was not as easy as it looked and in about a week I was injured with sore nipples, bleeding and excruciating pain while breastfeeding. I was determined not to give up and had several appointments with lactation consultants at the hospital and every one ended with tears at home as they ultimately said 'this is something you have to get used to as we have shown you everything we can'. I was heartbroken as even with nipple trauma, injury and Mastisis I wanted to give it my 110% before I thought of quitting. Someone on the FB support group for breastfeeding moms in Tri Valley recommended Katherine to me. She could make house visits and I could not be happier about that especially when you have a 2 week old. She came, listened to all my questions patiently, showed me the breastfeeding position that worked best for me in the comfort of my home and answered endless questions that I had in person and over texts over the next few days. After every visit I felt more confident that I could do this. Her constant encouragement, positive vibes, motherly advice and patient attitude without judgement made me very comfortable and I looked forward to her visit and appreciated all her honest advice. Over the next few weeks I had problems with recurrent clogged ducts and she was always available to chat whenever required. She provided a customized care plan after the first visit which recommended a tongue tie evaluation by a pediatric dental specialist and some bodywork for the baby both of which helped the breastfeeding experience in the long run.
