Although the installation teams have been wonderful, the whole process working with Star Lumber has left a bad taste in my mouth. My husband and I have been working to get our basement finished in preparation for our new baby. Since Star Lumber did our upstairs (prior to us moving in) we figured we would use them again for continuity's sake. The quality, look, and feel of everything is high quality. However, working with them has been extremely trying. To start off, if you do a renovation, you have to go to 4 different departments to pick out everything. The departments do not communicate with one another at all and you end up telling everyone the same thing over and over again. This also causes problems with coordinating and facilitating installation. We ordered everything in January, but weren't finished with regular installation things until April. The only reason we got done as fast as we did was my semi-weekly phone call asking them how things were progressing and when we could proceed with installation. They were very unresponsive which felt unprofessional and made it hard to get the ball rolling. Although we asked for phone calls prior to people showing up (ie the 30 minute call ahead before the appointment), we had to ask for those calls many times and even still didn't get any communication. One day the countertop team came to install the countertops (not the day they were scheduled) and we were trying to run home from work and missed them. They did our carpet and doors, but the doors don't fit post carpet, even though they did the measuring of the doors and trim and everything. read more

After further discussions, they came back and exchanged the damaged boards for new boards. Jeff was very understanding and was diligent in getting things resolved. Would highly recommend. read more

Rating is purely for the staff on the floor, this time the "door department" or whatever. (Installers used thru Star have been excellent on past projects). This time we were shopping for a door. Apparently, this is too much to ask for as employees scattered like roaches to hide when we were obviously looking for assistance. One employee was obviously inebriated, or still loaded from the night before, or just permanently stupid. Made two trips back and forth and it was somewhat hilarious and mildly infuriating watching the C-level acting job these sorry, pathetic employees did pretending to be busy. I ended up going elsewhere to a business that doesn't have employees that part like the Red Sea on the chance a customer will ask a question or make a purchase. My bad, Star, it won't happen again. * STAR is questioning the validity of this review, and is doing far more work with regards to this review than my in-store visit. So I will double down with more detail. It was the week of Thanksgiving, Monday or Tuesday. 1pm or so. The first employee saw me come in and was fixated on a spot on the wall. I then proceeded down the main aisle and saw an employee discussing something with a customer. Okay, he's busy, no problem. Older guy. Then I saw is conversation was with another employee. Once I passed by them they broke up and went to hide (assuming). An older, middle aged, somewhat haggard woman was next as she scurried from her desk quickly to go look closely at one of the display doors until I was safely out of range. I had the business card of a person (I've long since thrown it away, don't remember the name) that my wife dealt with the prior week - after going thru this same, tired routine of trying to lasso an employee a week or two before. Finally, I headed back towards the front and asked the a) hung over b) still drunk or c) stupid guy if So and So was working. He was now fixated on something out the front window, 180 degrees away from me. "He's at lunch" and then "Sometimes he comes back on time". That was it. Done. Why ask anything else or even try at that point. read more

Stopped by this morning with my mother and initially was in awe at how nice things were displayed. Was a bit shocked at the lack of greetings as I had only seen one other customer in the building. Numerous employees crossed paths not as much as glancing up making eye contact no less to ask if we had questions. My mother commented this is the third or fourth time in and she bender has been approached or greeted. Went to leave and mother asked a few questions on doors she wants, guy answered but had this expression of annoyance. I'm helping her with remodel and steering mother away from this place, doesn't deserve the one star with that treatment. read more

Star Lumber KNOWS they have a corner on the "new housing" market in Wichita and surrounding areas and their customer service in "where the money is" reflects that. Their new construction department is pretty good, but their existing home and renovations departments are pretty bad - I've tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, I really have. However, if I build a new home again I will absolutely and unequivocally refuse to give them my business going forward because when I finished my basement myself, their "renovations" team has been rude, not followed up when they have said they would have, incomplete orders, wrong orders, and inventory they say they had, "your order is ready for pickup", when I showed up to pick it up, it was "out of stock" and sold to another customer that could pick it up on sight right away and no follow up when it was back in stock as promised by their warehouse manager. I'm a HUGE proponent of customer service and Star Lumber doesn't have it for the "small orders". Plain and simple, period. I have specific names if anybody wants them. GO ELSEWHERE, you've been warned by this and other reviews saying the same. read more

The Customer is expected to take the hit for any errors made by them. Installation prices are way over-priced "because they only hire the best and have to pay them accordingly". Installation does not include integration items such as repairing damaged drywall next to installation zones, etc. If a supplier quits carrying an item that you ordered from Star, you cannot return it to Star because they can't return it to the supplier, putting the cost all on us. Salesman was constantly pushing items that are way above the price point that we set. Salesman ordered wrong finishes, wrong quantity and wrong sizes for our shower drain and niches. He also never asked if we wanted a center drain or Left/Right drain basin. None of these items could be returned because their supplier didn't carry the brand any more, and no effort was made to satisfy our dilemma. If you are looking for service and integrity AFTER the sale, avoid Star. read more

Oh Star Lumber... you are the absolute WORST. How do you measure cabinets wrong in the first place? Then, how do you promise a week for new cabinets and take a month instead? Then, how do you remeasure one of the cabinets wrong a second time AND forget to make one cabinet? This is literally your job.... to work with Lumber... You are the ABSOLUTE WORST. This will be the last time I enter the facility. I work not to far from this location so I always run there for general repair needs, it is close and easy. I will now take the time to drive to another hardware store. I honestly think if you're not a general contractor or a major purchaser you don't matter. I'm in customer service and was reminded today of how NOT to treat my customers if I want them to return. I post reviews for good and bad experiences, this was a bad one. The last week of Feb. I ordered some tile from their excellent selection, paid for it and was told it should be here in about a week. Great. I called our sales man twice at the end of the first week and talked to him both times, said he was busy once and the second time he couldn't check because he had to many screens open on his computer, both times told us he would call us back, yea right! Talked to another sales man the next week and was told it was still on order. Went to customer pickup 2 and half weeks into this and they had no clue, even with the paperwork in hand. On march 19 I dropped in again to see if it had arrived, low and behold it was there so I picked it up. On the 20th the sales man called and said it was in!!! I've used Star twice before when I was building 2 separate houses and was very pleased, but they appear to not be able to handle small customer orders. read more

I have always rather support a local. I phone ordered a set: a deadbolt and door handle/lock. These were items on display. They required I pay by credit card. When I came and picked it up, I found that the set didn't match! When I asked the manager he said that I have to deal directly with the person I ordered from by phone. When I dealt with him, he says he has to ask his manager. O.O Update: After some time... we were refunded. read more

I recently ordered a new front door, screen door and all of the hardware to go with it from Star on West street. Dennis Vogt was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. When my first special order door came in damaged he immediately let me know and had a new one on the way. I was also extremely impressed with the installer they use and recommended. This company has a serious customer service issue. We just built a house and unfortunately we had no other choice but to deal with them as my builder only works with them (sad). The very first meeting went well as our designer was welcoming. However, everything later turned bad. I had many questions, especially about the measurements, after they admitted they made a mistake on one of the items, but I could never get an answer. I went to the store many time trying to talk to the designer we originally talked to but she was never available, she never called me back, and only replying to my emails once or twice. Tired of the situation, I went to the store, once again, trying to talk to the supervisor in charge of that department. Again, I left messages, emailed him, but I never got a response. In my opinion, this is not the way to take care of a customer. I truly hope we don't have to deal with this company again in the future. Went against our contractor's advice and got our flooring through Star due to a discount we received there. Redid every square inch of flooring in our house with them. Used their contractors to install the flooring and were disappointed with the results. We figured they would back up their work since it was their product so they were the safest bet to install it. They had to come out three times to fix it, damaging other parts of our remodel in the process, however. Chipped granite, dents in our newly painted walls, damaged handrail we had custom made, etc. were discovered after their work was done. If we would have gone through our contractor he would have had to repair damages but we feel that we just have to live with the damage done at this point. The flooring is finally ok, but definitely not perfect. Wood floors still squeak and move in spots and carpet is not laid correctly at edges in a couple of rooms. The manager was nice in talking to us and making sure they redid the flooring. It just wasn't a stellar experience with the subcontractors. The product they sell is nice so I would recommend using someone else to install it if you get it through them. Wouldn't use them to install again and would advise my friends and family not to either. read more

Do yourself a favor and do it yourself! You can't do a worse job than Star. I thought a tiny flooring job would be a simple project - not when dealing with a clueless and uncaring staff. One would think it is their first year in business. From start to finish, they screwed up, made excuses, didn't seem to understand how to operate a measuring tape, etc. They insist on full payment upfront, which should've been my first red flag. I had the floor in a very small landing area (the size of a large welcome mat) at my front door and the floor in a very small bathroom done with Star Flooring. This was done with floating floors - no tearing out of old flooring or grouting. Right at the estimate they forgot to include transition pieces, which would turn out to be a pain. We got that ordered, supposed to match the tiles exactly. Upon installation in the bathroom, the toilet removal left a valve leaking (not surprising as it is an older house), but because the plumber (they insist on using their own for which you prepay) was told the wrong day to reinstall toilet, I was left with a leaking valve. I was running back and forth for several hours trying to make sure my containers were emptied in time to save my new floor from water damage. I finally had to go in to Star and talk to someone to get the plumber to call directly. The plumber told me he was not aware there was a leak and would be right over (the Star supervisor informed me he made the plumber aware). Once that was taken care of, the next hurdle was the transition pieces. Supervisor gave me 3 different conflicting stories of why they couldn't use the pieces they got and would need to come out another time to finish with different ones. Contact person was rude, wouldn't shut up to listen to the situation, then made excuses rather than attempting to solve the problem. Finally she shut up and long story short: the transition pieces that were ordered do not work on floating floors. [This seems like Flooring 101 to me.] So the following week we rescheduled to have basic nickel transition pieces installed. Different installer (employee) came and was shocked at the poor and incompetent job the contractor installer did. He spent 2 hours on a 20 minute job trying to make it work. It's still not right and we ended up having to remove a door and cut 1/2" off the bottom so it would close in addition to adding caulk to fill an area insufficiently cut to fit. The landing area was done so poorly that there is potential for the tile to break over time as it isn't properly supported underneath. The last installer had 35 years of experience in the field and was very sympathetic and honest, but agreed they won't care or change their practices and this is standard. We ended up getting $200+ refunded on this $900+ job (way overpriced) due to all the mistakes. Truly it should be torn out and redone completely, but I'd rather eat a bag of angry worms than have them handle anything else in my home. read more

When it comes to lumber materials, Star Lumber is the place to go. Unlike many of their competitors, they stock a full line and are able to rip and cut your lumber to exact dimensions. The Star personnel are also friendly and very helpful. read more

Star Lumber reached out to me & my builder after my posting. They were very sorry & wanted to make it right. My builder did an excellent job in staining the trim & doors. Even though I didn't get exactly what my choice was, now that the trim, doors, & formica are on, I have to say it looks pretty good & pretty close to my vision that I can be happy with it. Thank you Star for caring & I am sorry & apologize for the grief I caused your cabinet Lady for now I have to say a wrong mistake turned out to be a good mistake at the end. I had high hopes for my bathroom remodel. I am now sure I will not use this company again. While their contractors have done a very nice job with the work, the people at Star are clueless. First of all, they gave me a five- to six-day timeline for completing the job. That was two months ago, and it's still not done. I would expect the project coordinator to keep me updated on what is happening, but I've had to make multiple phone calls and keep pushing him to get this thing done. About halfway through, I got a call from someone wanting my feedback "now that your bathroom is finished"...what? The floor hadn't even been started at that point. It's amazing how incompetent these people are. I had planned to have Star remodel my bar area next, but now there is no way I will use them again. read more
