Husband had the Starboard Burger which was a decent burger. Did not come with any sides. We decided to try the smoked pork poutine. We liked it okay, but we are new to poutine. Not the most healthy though. I had the tofu and peanut bowl, which was not what I expected at all. I thought it would be a kind of salad type bowl. Instead, It was more of a soggy stir fry with an overall sweet sauce, served with rice and a few pieces of nan bread. The tofu was deep fried. Not a good dish. In terms of atmosphere and service Starboard is excellent. The waitresses are attentive, quick and friendly. Nice waterfront view and clean dining area. In terms of food I ordered the chicken hotpot. Wish I ordered something else. Although it didn't taste bad it wasn't very impressive or flavorful or spicy. Maybe their specialities are their burgers? Perhaps I can give it another try. read more

Cruise ship stopped here. Spent the day just wandering around town. Saw reviews, and locals confirmed, that the salmon chowder here is really good. So we came here for lunch. We ordered salmon chowder, coconut onion rings, calamari. As promised, the salmon chowder was really good. The onion rings also are really good. The calamari was cooked properly (tender, not like chewing on a piece of rubber). But the flavor was just "OK", and the dipping sauce was forgettable (and I mostly didn't use it...just didn't really like it). Portion size was reasonable. Service was friendly. View of the water was nice. Really I'd place them at 3.5 stars, but YELP still doesn't let me do that. I am going to round-up for the service, portion, and view. They served my wife rancid guacamole with her quesadillas, and made no apology for that. However, the guacamole provided a worthy compliment to the quesadillas themselves, which were not only bland, but dry and unappealing in every way. I ordered the ribs and chicken. The ribs were OK but the portion was tiny, while the chicken was OK overcooked and more or less tasteless. We will not be back. read more

I walked here from my Airbnb in Port Alberni on Thanksgiving. I had the whole outdoor deck to myself. I ordered the veggie burger as it was the only hearty think that was plant based. I also order 1/2 litre of wine so that made everything better. A first glance it's a nice cost restaurant. The staff are sincere and kind hearted. My waitress was delightful to have small talk with. I enjoyed my burger. It was insanely flavourful. I sipped my wine while I watched the sun disappear behind the mountains. We went to Starboard Grill twice during our stay in Port Alberni (something I rarely do), but their salmon soup was that good (and also dinner options in town after 9 pm are quite limited). I highly recommend their candied salmon chowder, it's delicious! I was less impressed with my main entree, the rack of lamb. I ordered it medium rare but it came out medium/medium-well, and was generally underwhelming, especially given the price. My rating is because the soup was amazing, the views of the water are beautiful, and the servers were very friendly. However, if I'm ever back I'll probably stop in just for a drink and soup/appetizers on the porch. read more

Absolutely the best view restaurant in Port Alberni. Even on a blustery day, you can enjoy eating outside. The protective glass is set up in such a way that you can enjoy the view and still stay warm. Of course have a cup of their delicious vegetable soup is a great plus as well. We enjoyed everything about our visit, from the amazing view, to the very polite and efficient wait staff - I'm talking about you Kiara! Where to start... the Fish and Chips were flavorable and not too breaded or greasy. The Beet Salad had plenty of fresh beets, pumpkin seeds, goat cheese on a bed of greens. Just a slight tough of balsamic vinaigrette made it even more fresh. Of course a glass a glass of one of the local beers made it a plus. A must visit next time you are in Port Alberni! read more

Portion size is just right. Service is super friendly and the decor/ambiance/location are all pretty great. Yes, the onion rings are quite good. Over breaded for my taste, but good crunch with a delicious aoli Cons: waitress was NOT very knowledgable, and had to keep running to the kitchen to ask questions - she said she doesn't eat seafood - hello, what? We are on Vancouver island. Also, my food - while cooked perfectly and beautifully presented - was not seasoned well. No salt underneath the sauce (got the baked cod - which was very tasty - the mango Bbq sauce really packs nice heat and flavor). Also maybe like 20% overpriced. I think the bad ratings are due to the price but I rather recommend this place for out-of-towners searching arduously for great food while going through port Alberni after everything closes around 7:30-8. read more

Coconut onion rings to start were decent. I ordered a burger with their soup of the day--tomato soup which was fantastic...it was the only thing that I really enjoyed. My burger came with a very wet soggy bun and the sauce overwhelmed the whole burger. When asked how everything was and I told them burger was soggy and sauce overwhelmed the taste they offered to remake the burger...I had already scraped off the sauce and discarded the bun but had only had 2 small bites of the burger, I just wanted it over so I said no...I will say if they had offered me the option of changing my order To something else, I would have jumped at it. I left hungry after paying high price and basically getting a meat patty....full price too as no discount offered. That burger repeated on me for hours. My mom got the roast lamb which was over cooked and chewy we took it home for the dog. A couple hours after dinner my mom started getting terrible pains in her stomach and got sick. View was beautiful, and staff was very nice and kept our beverages full...but the food....Definitely would NOT recommend! read more

Spending $350 on a meal that sucks will do that to you. The bill would have been much lower but we needed to pound back a number of bottles of red wine to calm ourselves. Great Food, Great Atmosphere, Good Pricing From the outside you would not guess the quality of this place. We stopped in for an early dinner, about 4:30 in the afternoon on Saturday of the Family Day long weekend. Walking in, you can tell that the owners take time to ensure the dining area looks good. There were three other customers inside the dining room when we arrived, and there was one person working as wait staff. His name was Scott, and was extremely outgoing and friendly. We were told to sit wherever we chose and we found a great spot in the sun with an incredible view of the water (Alberni Inlet). The atmosphere inside the dining area was exceptional, music was playing just loud enough that you couldn't eaves drop on surrounding diners, but quiet enough that you could easily hold a conversation with your table mates. I am not sure if they have a play list for the music but it was classical instrumental music and not your typical random country or easy listening radio station. Scott presented us with a few choices for the soup of the day, and both sounded very good, however my wife and I both opted for the fish and chips, made with Ling Cod. The speed of the food was exceptional, and was presented very well. The fish was cooked perfectly and had great taste. It was not the typical overly fried, greasy fish you would get with fish and chips, and was delicious. I highly recommend. The fish and chips came with one piece of perfectly deep fried Ling Cod, a healthy serving of chips (french fries) and a small portion of Coleslaw. Prices were fantastic, in my opinion. For two people to eat and have a non-alcoholic beverage it cost just under $40.00CAD, which included a $10.00 tip for out outstanding wait staff. All in all, I would give the food and food service and 5/5, however from the outside this restaurant could use some work and could benefit from some better advertising on the exterior of the building. If you are traveling through Port Alberni and looking for a great place for a pit stop or if you're a resident looking for a great date night, I highly recommend this location. read more

i know a lot of people like this place. I've tried it 3 times and every time have been disappointed. Last time tried the BBQ ribs...over cooked on the outside, hard and salty BBQ sauce....potatoes that came with it were also overcooked and veggies cold. My husband had the cod and said it was nothing special...also cold veggies and flavorless rice with it. Expensive and over done with too many trendy flourishes...Keep it simple is better. one time at lunch I had the hamburger to try it...there was so much stuff on it the whole thing was a mess...i needed 10 napkins to deal with it...Good Luck !!! Went for lunch and ordered the fish taco. Came out hot and soggy and inedible I promptly returned and declined a replacement as the rest of my table was half finished. What a perfect setting on the harbor to enjoy our lunch. The seafood chowder my husband had was outstanding, and I had the soup special which was Roasted Red Pepper and Mushroom. So yummy. Also shared the sandwich special of the day. Our waitress was kind, friendly and soft spoken, checking in with us frequently. The harbor view was an added bonus. We sat on the deck which is protected from the elements by a glass enclosure, and roof over the tables. You are still outside, enjoying the warmth of the sunshine, no matter the temperatures. We really enjoyed our lunch here. The setting is great ... right on the water. The service was excellent. Our server treated our two young kids (4 & 1) really well, so that makes a big difference. She said she's a grandmother, so she knows how to entertain young kids! The food was really good. The soft fish taco was delicious. The beet salad is also a real winner.
