I found the Sunshine Cafe several months after moving to Dun Laoghaire, and it quickly became one…read moreof my favourite places for a late breakfast or lunch on a weekend. On Sundays they have a guitar duo performing live (and not loudly, which is nice), and at other times the background music ranges from a local radio station to Van Morrison to jazz. The staff are cheerful, seem to have genuine smiles, and know that I always like a glass of water with my lunch. One of my favourite meals here is the seafood chowder; it's lightly creamy, and full of large chunks of fish and vegetables. On the side, two pieces of soda bread. Delicious! I think I've also sampled most of the items on the menu, and while there are a few that aren't really to my taste or done in a style I like, if I was an octopus with thumbs I'd give the cafe 8 thumbs up.

There's seating at a few tables out front on the sidewalk, inside on both levels, and on the back patio. The service was friendly and quick. I ordered the seafood chowder, which has mussels, salmon, and other fish in a tomato broth with various vegetables. I'm not as used to the Mediterranean version of the dish, but it's hearty and delicious. I was too full for any dessert, but an array of pies and cakes sit up at the counter for anyone with a sweet tooth.

Been here on a few occasions and for example, my most recent visit... It was a super cold winters day and I was looking forward to getting inside but they didn't really have much heat going on, many people still sitting with jackets and scarfs on, take the hint..!!! Also, it was 3pm and they had no sandwiches on display people had to ask for them and the lady seemed troubled to go out the back and bring a few options out... Plus for a great little cafe building and area, they have only pre-made sandwiches, ye know the kind in cardboard/plastic sleeves. They don't have any option to toast them and also pretty sad, they cut it into quarters and serve it on a plate... Eh, we all known I've just bought a cardboard sandwich, serving it to me in triangles doesn't make it any more gourmet. Also, 3pm... Cold winters day and they had ran out of soup, yep, no soup... Was half expecting her to say they had no hot water for my cup of tea, but it's ok, hot water was in stock :-) Service wise, they really could do with putting on a smile... There's little or no pleasantries from the staff which is such a shame and as a tourist hub, they don't give off that renowned Irish Charm.
