I have spent time at a number of tennis academies throughout the country including a significant…read moreamount of time at the Junior Tennis Champions Center (JTCC) in College Park, Maryland - a USTA training base. I can say, without a doubt, that High Performance Tennis Academy (HPTA) is by far one of the best academies in the Northeast United States. HPTA has programs for all ages and levels - kids, teenagers and adults. Their programming for kids is known as Junior Circuit and is under the Direction of Kellen Thomas, a former collegiate tennis player at Drexel University. At the Junior Circuit level, programming starts at age 4 and goes from red ball through green ball. The Academy program which is made up of four programs - Future Champs, Super Squad, High Performance Development and High Performance. The High Performance programming is under the direction of co- owner, Dylan Comerford. Dylan played collegiate tennis at Winthrop University, at the #1 position, and was top-250 in ITF Juniors. He's one of the most highly-respected coaches in the area and has sent 100+ kids to college for tennis with nearly $1 million in scholarships. This years graduating class included players going to a number of D1 and D3 schools including UPenn, Presbyterian, Emory, Vassar, Franklin & Marshall and many others. A number of players, who went on to become professional, have trained at HPTA in the past including CiCi Bellis (former WTA #35 and ITF Junior #1) and Anna Mamalat (former WTA #900 and Texas A&M tennis player). Anna is now a coach at HPTA! The adult program is primarily run by Rob Isaacs, (HPTA's co-owner), Julio Toledo (former top-20 junior player in Mexico) and Harvey Becker (former British National Champion and ATP #400). Their adult program ranges for programming for 4.5+ NTRP players, 3.0-3.5 players and beginner players. HPTA was founded in 2009 by a South African coach Charles Wheeler (he has since returned to his native country), who coached Kevin Anderson when he was a junior. When HPTA was first founded, the academy was based entirely out of AFC Riverside (Bala Cynwyd, PA). While they continue to have programming there, they have expanded to the nearby Cynwyd Club, Radnor Valley Country Club and hold their renowned summer camp at Haverford College. Altogether, HPTA is the best tennis academy in the Philadelphia-area and one of the best in the Northeastern US. Highly recommend for all ages and levels!

I didn't know anything about Philadelphia or any of the programs for teens and I had to rely 100% on information I found on the internet. My daughter was an OK tennis player; she has taken tennis lessons at our local rec center over the years. But she is not a natural born athlete and she does not have experience in tournaments. Her goal was to make the tennis team at her high school in the fall. We signed up for the intermediate level camp. The first week she was probably the oldest one in her group--the younger boys were annoying--but she persisted and later there were older players in her group so she was able to make friends. Over the weeks that she participated in the program she worked very hard. She did not love every day of it, but both her game and her overall fitness level improved tremendously. She had a great sense of accomplishment when she finished. Although initially quite reluctant, in the end she was very happy that she had attended several weeks of the summer program, and she was able to make her goal of being on the tennis team in the fall. :) Other notes: My daughter liked the food they served. And Michelle was very kind and helpful. My daughter had a couple of private lessons with the owner, Charles. Initially I thought they were pretty expensive, but after seeing what she gained I came to believe they were well worth the expense. (In fact if he were here in California I would love to have her train with him weekly.)

The refs are young(hs age) for the younger soccer games but they seemed knowledgeable. The indoor fields are turf and the large field is split into 2smaller fields for games where the teams play literally wall to wall - def a bit different but a great opportunity for you to continue playing. There are also outdoor fields to be used we just were not signed up for those. Also has adult soccer and lacrosse. There are places to stand to watch the games with a little obstruction but it's not terrible. Very easy to get to but parking is crazy, very small lot and extremely busy. But I would recommend for anyone adults or kids

Scheduling is the real issue, they cram in all the games they can with games starting 2 minutes after the last game ends leaving almost no time to warm up. Players are often still walking off the pitch when the next game starts. This also makes parking tough. Not only are the games right on top of each other, but a lot of people hang around after their game socializing or waiting for another chance to play. Reffing can be hit or miss. There are some good refs, and some really bad ones that just linger around midfield rather than staying with the play. It's a great facility, and the only game in town!

The staff there was very friendly and interactive during the entire 3 hour event. Parking can be challenging since they don't have a dedicated lot. There should be street parking available------ be prepared to walk. When you arrive, you need to remove your shoes and put them into the small cubbie spaces. The downstairs area is where the kids can play with different toys and play equipment such as mini-trampoline etc. Bathrooms are downstairs and very clean. A child gate keeps kids from wandering away from the play area. Upstairs is where the food was set up. There are tables for gathering to eat as well as another area for the kids to dine. Space is limited so large parties could be challenging.

This pool, completely renovated in 2004, is large enough to have fun but small enough to be able to spot your young 'un from anywhere you sit. The entrance is through Vernon Young Park, another gem with a full kids' playground, basketball & tennis courts, a large playing field for baseball, flag football, soccer, etc. and the Ardmore Avenue Community Center. So, if the young un's don't want to swim, they can play too. When you enter, you pass through either the male or female changing areas complete with lockers and showers as well as restrooms. There are two pools - a good sized toddler pool with a zero step entry, water spouts and a water mushroom play feature. Maximum depth 18 inches. Then there is the 'larger' pool, also with a zero step entry, a water slide and maximum depth of 5'. Separating the two are a low fence, some bushes, and a shade awning over some grass. Surrounding both pools are picnic tables with umbrellas. Water toys are permitted in the baby pool area. The pools are staffed with lifeguards who change station regularly to stay alert. There is no snack bar, which is in some ways a blessing (no $9 fries!). Many of the local restaurants deliver 'to the pool', and if you want you can easily leave and walk to many of them too. Parking? Well, that's the one star off. It's street only, and it can be a bit of a challenge. I don't want them to make a parking lot by any means, but it does take away from the experience. Also, you bring your own chairs, blankets, etc, which can make for a haul. Maybe the Township will get wise and start a business to rent chairs on site (hint, hint). Now, the thing that makes this really GREAT. The cost to join? For a family of four, residents of the Township, about $70. For the season. Really. Over 65 year old residents are free. Yes, really. That is not a typo. It's under a hundred dollars. A year. Well, a summer. The pool is open Memorial Day - Labor Day. (Residents of Narberth Borough can join but at a higher rate as can a limited number of residents in Ardmore, Haverford Township, again at a higher rate.) Like I said, one of the Great Deals of the Century. Here in wonderful Ardmore.

After one of our group runs, we were all invited back for some open court time. Two courts are available for playing single or doubles. The rules are very similar to racquetball, if you've ever played or watched you'll have no problem picking things up quickly! The courts are open to the public and have open sessions on Wednesday and Friday nights. They also will be starting a league and have other times available if you'd like to rent out a court. Racket rentals are included! A half hour in the beating sun was enough for me however the time did fly. I think I'll give the league a shot...

I was there on Saturday November 10, 2018, for 2 football games…read more 1 game started at 1pm, the 2nd game at 3pm. Luckily my daughter and I went to the bathroom during the 1st game. Went to go back to the bathroom around 1:30pm to sit on the heater, very cold and windy, and the bathroom was locked. Why is that, game was not over until 3:30pm. Why are you locking the bathroom before all the people leave the field? This wasn't the first time either that bathrooms were locked. 2nd, I was just there last weekend for a game and the bleachers were there, this Saturday November 10th, 2018, bleachers were gone, WHY.

(A venmo account for the rink would go a long way here.) Pick up your skates, lace up, and go in! Everyone was great about masking while we were there, and staff were on hand if we had questions. For the newbies (especially the kids), they have big blue plastic things to push -- my kids were big fans. There are restrooms on site (gendered multi-stall). Note: Due to COVID, there's no eating on site, so if you have snacky kids like ours, plan to eat in the parking lot.

This rink has the worst open hockey culture out of any rink I've ever played at in the greater…read morePhiladelphia area; it boils down to a lack of organization, accountability, and severe tribalism. I've skated here three times, and every time, one player named Nick who seems to culturally lead the place, has ruined it. The first time I skated here, Nick was verbally upset and would not stop complaining about the teams. First he was upset because we suggested playing full ice to get better exercise, and then he was upset and insulted me by saying I'm just there because I "want to score 40 goals" because I was skating on a team with a friend of mine who is a good player. To stop him from complaining, my friend and I switched teams and once the teams were lopsided in the favor of Nick's team, he was content and less yappy. He clearly made snap judgments about me and I assume felt threatened because before anyone was playing, I tried to organize a game, but since I suggested playing full ice and with the teams as they were at the time, he thought I was trying to make teams unfair. I just wanted to skate and get good exercise; the last thing I wanted to do was argue with a stranger who thought he had me pegged as a sandbagger. Today I played again and things were even worse. Everyone there was on board with skating full ice, but right before we started playing, Nick started to complain. Again, had he any ability to conflict manage, he could have suggested why we play half ice and I'm sure we could have happily reached that conclusion. Instead, it became a tiresome verbal argument. While playing, I bumped helmets during a board battle with a player on his team and Nick immediately started verbally harassing me. A play or two later he tried tripping me along the boards and I said nothing. Later during the game, a beginner player on his team flagrantly tripped me and Nick started screaming about me and yelling at me for "going too hard." I was indignant because I was just flipped by a trip from behind and I was being screamed at for it, so I challenged Nick and yelled back. All the meanwhile, the guy who runs open hockey was on the rink. He tried to break it up, but because he has a relationship with Nick and not me, he said nothing to challenge Nick on his regular antics. While yelling back and forth with Nick, we both said mean things, and it escalated to him taking off his gloves and repeatedly punching my cage as everyone else tried to break it up. The game stopped then and we all decided to leave. In the locker room, Nick would not shut up and continued to talk bad about multiple people there while everyone was telling him to drop it. He then looked at me and screamed, "how do you know I do not have a gun or knife in my car?" The guy who runs the rink not only tolerated this, but said "weird transition, but would you guys want to play open hockey on Tuesday night?" To the credit of the guy who runs open hockey, he tries to make it fun for all and he seems like a really good person, but every effort is ruined by Nick, his tribalism, his immaturity, his rage, his anger, and his lack of an ability to compromise and work with other people. It's a shame: I would love to play here because it's a nice rink and a good price and I love the Sunday 9:30 to 11:00 timeslot, but if there is a culture that doesn't police itself or hold people accountable for acting the way that its regulars do, I have no interest in returning to such a horrible environment. I called the rink to give them this feedback after the incident and was told I'd be called back in 10 minutes. Still nothing over two hours later.
