This is a review of the 2023 Tax Season. I just had my taxes done by a professional local firm in…read more2026 and it reminded me to leave this review. The story: I had been a dyed in the wool HR Block Premium customer for decades. But their customer service has gotten SO bad over the years that I refused to do it one more time. I did my research on local businesses and heard good things about Helms and they were literally in my neighborhood. I also liked going to a family-owned, local small business. I thought I would get more accountability and access to help. I actually got the opposite. The worst was that my taxes were not filed on time. And I had to deal with this troublesome return for a full year afterwards and fines kept coming in from feds and state. I couldn't get them on the phone or via email before the deadline and finally out of desperation I went to their offices in person on April 15 and asked them what was going on. The son came out in a mood and basically told me that they were not going to be done on time in a very rude manner. I looked at him and said "You can make me eat a shit sandwich, but you can't make me like it. This is very unprofessional." Later on I heard from friends of friends that they were really in the weeds and sent some customers a notice saying that they were doing their best but that they had more customers than they could handle that year. I never got a phone call or email myself. After my taxes were done, I met with the father and he didn't seem to get why I was upset. He barely apologized. I washed my hands of it after that. Never again. Signs of a professional, reputable business: - Admit when you're wrong sooner rather than later. - Don't blame the customer for your own shortcomings. - Do everything you can to fix the problem with grace and dignity instead of foot dragging and whining. - Turn away clients if you don't have the bandwidth to help. Or hire more help. - Don't hire family members if they can't do the job responsibly and be accountable. - Do call your customer when there's a problem or you're missing info. - Communicate, communicate, communicate - And for Godssake, if you're an accountant's office, be organized!
