I would not get caught up in the acronyms and marketing hype with these guys. All talk about being rebels of wall street and really little in the proof. For all the effort and check ins the results were less than what the bigger and established financial companies were able to do. Update 2/16: I want to share that the owner of Stash Wealth reached out to me and shared her appreciation for my feedback. She also addressed some key concerns I had and expressed how feedback helps them evolve and stay competitive. After this, I do feel more confident in recommending this service to friends knowing how seriously they take their feedback and I'm excited to consider revisiting this service at a later date. ------------ I purchased the individual stash plan. Here are some of my notes that may help you make a decision if Stash Wealth is right for you. Summary: I think SW could be a good starting place for some people. If you aren't sure what accounts to setup, how much you can afford a month on expenses, or how to save for retirement or a home then this could be helpful. Things I liked: -Small team / personalized experience -Professional and nice staff -They have "experts" in various areas of the financial world which is nice if you like having one place to go to for your money questions. -A fiduciary - meaning they aren't suppose to sell you investments that aren't in your best interest -They seemed happy to let me email follow up questions after I went through the stash plan process - pretty quick responses -The online experience / website / portal was great. They used Zoom for the meetings. -good to have gotten another perspective on my financial plan. I now know I was checking the right boxes. Things I didn't like: - Having a small team means time is money meaning you may not get virtual time you need to get your "financial shit together". Leaving holes in your final plan or areas you wish they had looked at. -I noticed the advisor wasn't aware of some of the features in some of the products he was recommending. Wasn't aware of new savings features, along with the Ally Investment Platform (he thought they only let you buy stocks), wasn't aware of Wealthfront's minimum balance. If you're a money nerd you should keep up with this stuff so you know the latest and greatest to help your customers. -The overall Stash Plan was pretty basic in my opinion. They basically look at your income, budget, and do a little basic math to tell you where to flow your money to reach your goals. I expected more. Give me multiple approaches to killing my financial outlook i.e. show me various conservative and aggressive options to reach my goals faster (increase your 401k matching by x percent after paying off x debt, or sell vested stock on x date to do x thing which could give you x returns by x date allowing you to retire x number of years earlier). I felt a little bit like a number to them - after they get your basic money flow they try to upsell you on ongoing money management. -They ask you to upload your bank, credit card statements, employer benefits, paystub, etc... however they never gave me any insights into my spending or to my knowledge, used my statements in my stash plan. -I only met twice with the advisor - around an hour each time and it felt a lil rushed towards the end. -After my first meeting, I sent some updated debt numbers to my advisor, but he forgot to update our plan by the 2nd meeting. This fudged my final plan. This was a little off putting. -The advisor really didn't go into strategies on how to pay off debt faster, other than consider consolidating it. For example, one of my debts is a balance transfer and has 0%$ APR for 12 months. I feel like the advisor should have offered some insights on how i should prioritize that debt above other areas. There was no mentions or discussions around this. -Personally I did not like the style of the plan. At first I liked it, but later I found it difficult to find information, interpret it, etc.. the format, the way it was written and flow of it got on my nerves later. At the end they put a cliff notes slide - however in my mind, a good plan shouldn't need cliff notes. The plan should BE the cliff notes. -I have unvested stocks at the company I work for - I expected to see more forecasting around how and when to use the unvested company stocks. -I initially didn't provided accurate budgeting numbers - (on me) I would have given them brownie points if they had allowed me to redo my plan with the correct numbers instead they just told me some things to tweak over email or if they had caught this via the monthly statements - i.e. Cam based on the statement it looks like you spent $800 on food and not $200 a month like you said in our first meeting. Overall, they just take what you give them, create a money flow plan and get you on your merry way and try to get you in their Stash mgmt service. They aren't looking at your situation comprehensively - IMO. I don't trust the numbers or the plan provided so i'm no better then I was before dishing out $1300 bucks. Ultimately, I've learned that no one is going to care as much about your money and your life as you do. read more

I think this is a great service for someone or a couple with little to no understanding of money management. My husband and I were a bit underwhelmed by the recommendations and found that they were biased towards handing more of your $$ over to Stash Wealth for ongoing management. If you don't plan to work with Stash Wealth long term (ongoing % fee shaved off the top of your investments), you may find that the Stash Plan (1-time fixed price) is not effective or in your best interest. That said, everyone we spoke to along the way were incredibly nice, personable, and very enjoyable to work with. However, my husband and I did feel after the 3rd meeting that the Stash Plan designed for us didn't necessarily make the most sense. We also never heard from Stash Wealth again after that meeting, so we did not feel there was an opportunity to ask questions or make edits to our plan unless we signed on for the ongoing service. You're given 3 video conference meetings for the Stash Plan and that's it. read more

A couple years ago I realized how LITTLE I knew about money. I had the basics (savings, budgeting, etc.) and understood the end game (retirement). But what about all those decisions in the middle? It's hard to talk about, because everyone comes from a unique place: $ saved, debt accrued, etc. For example, my biz school friends went straight into jobs that made money from the get. I dropped out, waited tables, and worked for free. I was ready to make the biggest decisions of my life, but had no help to answer questions like: - If I want to buy a house in 3 years, how much money do I need? - Am I buying a house for the right reasons? - If I'm ready to start a family, when do I start saving? I started working with StashWealth as a financial advisor and it's been amazing. I got: - Personalized, actionable advice. 100% customized plan - Told me exactly how to reallocate my money. Then helped me open and close the right accounts. - Crazy good response rate. Anytime I've had a question, Rob (a co-founders) answered it in a few hours. Caveats: - SW is not right for everyone. IMO, get a baseline edu of personal finance first. - SW is NOT a "budget" option. They have a fee, more than Wealthfront or Betterment. All options are good, it depends on your needs. I've given so many shoutouts to Stash Wealth to my friends and family, but wanted to also publicly laud my amazing, caring financial advisors at Stash Wealth, who just *get* me (partly because they Facebook stalk me to keep up on what's happening in my life, which I *fully* support). On reviewing with them where I'm at with my goals and how I'm tracking in 2018 - and with them knowing all the recent upheavals in my life, including a recent breakup - I noticed an addition to my previously outlined savings plan for a (hypothetical) 2020 wedding. Instead of just "wedding," it now read: "2020: Wedding/awesome dance party." I started laughing. They explained: "Yeah, we just figured: screw it! Even if she doesn't get married, Alida's just gonna have an epic dance party - like, nothing but '90s hip-hop. And yes, we just invited ourselves." I told them they were, without question, first on the list. Can't sing their praises enough, especially right now with all the unknowns I'm facing with a recent layoff, potential career change... They've reassured me that yes, I have some breathing room to figure out what I want to do next, and that they're with me along the way through all of this to ensure that not only am I staying on track to meet my goals, but more importantly, that my goals are not judged based on what will be the best financial investment, but instead based on what will make me happiest - they'll work around that and take care of the rest. Oof, yeah. I needed that criteria reminder. Happiness is my compass right now, not horse sense. Can't recommend Stash Wealth enough. Just a little background on myself to give some perspective. I am 26 and live in Southern California as a Mechanical Engineer. I've been working with Stash for a few years now, and my only regret is not starting sooner. There is so much more I could have to my name if I started in my early 20's, but I always shied away thinking "I don't have enough to invest." What they were great at: - Breaking down your current financial situation - Laying down an approach that forced you to look at your own goals so they could asses how these matched up with your finances - Clearing up a lot of my questions (and I had plenty) - Telling me where to put my money, instead of just having it sit in a regular checking account earning close to nothing. What they could have done better: - As a report, the Stash Plan was a little messy. It made sense as they walked you through it, but it was confusing to follow when you reviewed it on your own. It could use an improvement in flow and design. - In my first phone call with Priya (when I was deciding whether to sign up for their service), I was told that their team was equipped to advise on my business structure. They connected me with a couple of advisors on their team, but neither were actually able to give me the guidance I needed. One of them seemed to be confused when we first got on the phone, asking who I was and what I needed, despite already having exchanged a few emails on the topic and setting up this phone call ahead of time. The other advisor gave me advice that ended up being contrary to what I was supposed to do. - She also assured me that their team was familiar with Canadian finances (RRSPs, etc.). But when they presented the Stash Plan, they provided recommendations without having knowledge on the tax implications of what they were advising me to do (with respect to Canadian retirement accounts). Following their advice on this front would have had negative tax implications. - And the big one: when I asked them about why they recommended the retirement savings plan that they did (including the amount), I was told that this amount was enough to keep me on track for retirement targets. But when I inserted these amounts into the retirement calculator they later included in one of their emails, turns out this amount only gets me to 38% of my goal. TLDR: Overall, a friendly and helpful team. I'm glad I worked with them, but the service was not as thorough as advertised. read more
