    04.30.22 Disney's Magic Kingdom [7/14/19]
    May A.

Just Go (#25) I love Florida! My first time in Florida was in July 2019 and since it was our first visit and we weren't sure if we will get another chance to return to the Sunshine State we hit Disney World in Orlando first. Yes, like young kids we hit all four theme parks -- Magic Kingdom, Disney's Animal Kingdom, Disney's Hollywood Studios, and Epcot (in that order) for four consecutive days spending a full day at each of the parks PLUS shopping at Disney Springs. Our experience was fun and enjoyable and we were even caught in frequent rainstorms halting some of the rides but after our final Disney adventure I didn't want to see another mouse for a long time and I was all Disney'd out. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The next day we went to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure (there were only 2 parks back then)! Fun! Fun! Fun! We enjoyed this place more than the four Disney World resort parks. At the Universal CityWalk we sat on that kingly gastronomical seat outside of Voodoo Doughnuts. I learned that the donut chair is exclusive Orlando. In Miami we dined at a Cuban restaurant (Havana 1957) on Española Way, a charming old world pedestrian-only street. So cool. Then we checked out Miami Beach at sunset. In Cocoa Beach we saw the historical marker, a street sign that commemorated one of actress, Barbara Eden's, visit to the I Dream of Jeannie Lane, yes, it exists! Remember Jeannie and Major Nelson? In Cocoa Beach was where we had our first taste of Krispy Krunchy Chicken... yum! Drove a little over an hour from Cocoa Beach and we ended up in New Smyrna Beach, a touristy spot and where beach driving is allowed. We have similar beaches in Cali... Pismo Beach and Oceano Dunes. We noticed one thing when we drove around... no chain restaurants, everything seems to be locally owned. Cool! We went to Everglades National Park and we signed up for a boat tour... a pontoon boat with Captain Smitty LoL! and his "1st officer," Tyler. Oh man, all I can remember was bring sunscreen, sunglasses, hat and don't forget the bug spray! Saw egrets, water snake but not much gators. We had more excitement at the swamp tours in Louisiana. Wow... just wow! Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral was awesome! Most tours were self-guided but there were some guided tours we were able to join. The Rocket Garden was cool and seeing the Space Shuttle Atlantis and the Apollo/Saturn was impressive, historic and amazing. We learned that NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Mountain View CA was a huge part of the history of the Space Shuttle launch. I once worked for a contractor company inside the Onizuka Air Force Station in Moffett Field. On a separate trip to AL in 2020 we crossed state lines to Pensacola. We were hoping to visit Fort Barrancas but they didn't allow the public to enter the base at the time because of the recent Pensacola NAS shooting in early January. Our visit was in mid February that year. We did see some cool Blue Angels F/A-18 Hornets at the base entrance. Pensacola NAS is home to the Blue Angels. Lastly, MCO is huge!!! There's a Hyatt Regency Hotel inside the airport... they have flat screens showing wait times to get through the security check point (just like they do in Disney World when waiting in line for a ride) LoL! Thank you, Great State of Florida... hope to return to the Sunshine State again soon!! Review #2571

State of Florida My Elementary School Song was the.... Florida State Song I want to wake up in the morning, where the orange blossoms grow. Where the sun comes a peeping into where I'm a sleep'n and the songbirds sing hello. I love the fresh air and the sunshine, it's good for us you know. So I'll make my home in Florida, where the orange blossoms grow. I grew up in Florida and there's so many things I like about it I would bore you to death. The beaches are the most beautiful. There's different parts of the state with different cultures to enjoy and different climates. After my divorce I brought my daughter to Florida from Kentucky to raise her. She would never want to live there now but definitely has a soft spot in her heart for the state just like I do. The Parks are plentiful and well kept. The entertainment provided by the amusement parks like Disney World and Busch Gardens is great when you're growing up and as an adult! I lived in Florida off and on for a total of 40 years. I've been to all the tourist attractions and most of the parks and beaches around the whole state. I'd never run out of things to do in Florida if I had the money. My daughter and I are planning a trip in Winter 2023. It will be great to go back for a visit. My parents and grandparents are buried there. I may pay my respects. I've got lots of friends in Florida to see and family. If you like the warm humid climate you may want to consider retiring there. I hate heat and humidity! I prefer the change of seasons where I live in New York (when they change). I'll just visit Florida when it's not hurricane season. I've been through enough Florida Hurricanes.

It can get really hot and humid but we love Florida! I mean it's the beach, in the south. Perfection.

It's only accessible by boat, which becomes your "dry land" while you spend most of your time in the water. We did a 3 hour tour (there's longer tours if you'd like), which was perfect for our limited schedule, but I went in early April without realizing just how cold the water would be. Even so, the crystal clear water and overall experience made it worth it. It's a unique, fun spot with floating vendors, beautiful views, and a lively atmosphere, which I hear is amazing in the warmer months. Pros: * Unique experience * Beautiful, crystal-clear water * Fun and lively atmosphere (lots of boats around) * Floating vendors with food and drinks available * Great for photos * Flexible timing options Cons: * Water can be very cold depending on the season (early April was freezing) * You're in the water most of the time, limited "dry" space on the boat * Can be less enjoyable with young kids in colder weather (mine needed to be on floaters the whole time) * Requires some planning (bring sunscreen, towels, floaties, cash) * Likely gets very crowded/party-heavy during peak warmer months * Only accessible by boat, need to do tour or rent private boat

It was originally in January 2012, fiberglass sculptor Mark Cline received a phone call from an employee of George Barber, a billionaire art patron. "Mr. Barber," said the voice, "is interested in you building a fifty-foot woman." So it happened, a fiberglass floating woman was born, but it's essentially just her head and knees but this lady would be taller than the Statue of Liberty if she were a full standing figure. She began life as the "Lady in the Lake" in Leeds but was moved to Barber's Elberta property several ago and is now 10 years old. The good news is she's all repaired and will be returning to her watery home at Barber Marina any day now. So, what some other things to see while you're on your way to Barber Marina? Well, there's a fiberglass Stonehenge replica, which is located in the woods by the road, and an assortment of other artworks by Cline including four dinosaurs, a T-rex, brontosaurus, stegosaurus and triceratops. Those sculptures weren't damaged by the hurricane because they are located farther inland and sheltered by woods. There's a few other surprises like a beautiful marble fountain, a giant metal spider and more :-) There's not much else out there because this is way out in the woods BUT you're not far from Pirates Cove, home if THE cheeseburger in paradise (see that review for details) and it's a great place for a cold one and, of course, a darned good burger on the sandy beach by the bay, don't miss that! Directions: Drive US-98 either eight miles east of Foley, Alabama, or 21 miles west of downtown Pensacola, Florida. Turn south onto County Rd 95. Drive 5 miles. Turn right onto Fish Trap Rd. Drive a 1/2 mile. Turn left at the Barber Marina sign. Drive 2.5 miles to the Barber Marina. Drive halfway around the traffic circle, then park in the lot as close to the water as you can. You'll see the Lady floating out toward the end of the dock; you can walk out to her. Bottom line: It's not everyone's cup of tea, but I thin it's cool. https://facebook.com/ElbertaDinos/

Now I can see how they were going for a gimmick marketing play here but they missed some elements. The restaurants and businesses here offer nothing French I saw and nothing that resembles New Orleans French Quarter. Panani Pete's offers Italian Panani sandwiches so this seems more like the Italian Quarter. Now parts of the New Orleans French Quarter were known as Little Italy or Little Palermo during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries as so many Sicilian immigrants lived in the French Quarter so maybe the theme is back to that era? The HUGE missing elements here are that they have no ability to allow you to carry your booze about everywhere like properly civilized humans should and they force closing times without any 24/7 establishments serving libations as a joy focused culture should. So I just don't get any sort of French Quarter vibe or joie de vivre required for a place to claim French Quarter status. Perhaps I'm missing something?

Welcome to Fairhope's French Quarter. Ahh, this little slice of heaven is in the middle of the beautiful little town of Fairhope. Getting to it is just as nice as being there. It's a pretty drive up and down hilly tree lined streets where duck and geese crossings aren't uncommon. Parking was a little challenging since I wasn't familiar with the area (yet, trust me I came here multiple times on my visit, so I learned quickly) but once I found it, it was a breeze and there are plenty of places to park for free. Once you're inside there so much to see and do, not unlike the New Orleans FQ but on a much smaller and less smelly scale. Cute little shops with clothing, books, restaurants, novelties and art. It's totally worth a visit or twenty and I highly recommend checking it out for yourself. I know I'll be back!

Don't worry, though--there aren't any graphic or disturbing displays, so it's a family-friendly experience. Be sure to stop by the museum to cool off and check out the gift shop.
