Evertysingle billing cycle I get a message n from the Statesman Journal that my account information needs to be updated because they say my credit card declines payment. Every single billing cycle I call the Statesman Journal and they say they will submit the payment request by hand. My credit card says they are not receiving any requests for payment from the Statesman Journal. This has been going on for a year. The best thing about the Statesman Journal is to use yesterday's paper to start a fire in your wood stove. To expect anything more than that is folly. Over the years, the paper has decreased in size and increased in price. What little content you get is mostly stories off the AP or from USA Today, not surprising from an offspring of Gannett. And although delivery on our route is timely now, there was a time when we'd get no paper one day and two the next, or have our paper laying in the ditch next to the mailbox due to retaliation from complaining of bad delivery service. But the most egregious thing about this "newspaper" is what it does not contain. It is happy to print stories from the mainstream media which fuel a certain narrative. But woe to those who do not subscribe to one-sided journalism. Case in point: for several years, every Letter to the Editor I wrote was printed, with a couple of exceptions due to formatting. Mysteriously, when their new executive editor, Cherrill Crosby, took the helm a couple of years back, all my submissions were ignored. Is it because my writing suddenly became sub-standard, or does the Statesman Journal only believe in free speech when they agree with it? Some months ago, I wrote personal letters to Cherrill Crosby, and the editor of the editorial letters, Carol Currie, calling them both out for their hypocrisy. They had ignored a Letter to the Editor I wrote in response to an inflammatory letter from one of their local pets who frequently submits vitriolic rhetoric. Conversely, several months prior, the Statesman printed three letters on the same day attacking a letter I sent in. I never expect to get anything published at the Statesman Journal. But then again, I don't really consider it a newspaper anyway; it's just fuel to start a comfy wood fire in the morning. read more

Well, our paper person is fantastic and we've had them for about 5 years I think;; if you're having trouble w/delivery issues get a box like we did and they put it in it every day even though they have to go up by our garage door to do so; we also love the variety, color pictures, restaurants, and esp trails & travels around Oregon. The content is a little short sometimes and the fact that it is published in Eugene by 8pm means we don't get any updated scores but I can find those on line anyway and so can all these people complaining who are on their cell phones or computers all day long anyway...Keep up the good stories...rich 30+year subscriber/former Eugene Register-Guard subscriber for 30+ years, too. Their customer service sucks. I emailed them to cancel my subscription. The only thing I got was someone would contact me. NEVER HAPPENED. I assumed it had been stopped as we did not get a newspaper for two days. Then today there was one. I called and the first person I could not understand her due to her lack of good ENGLISH, asked to speak to her supervisor but they kept talking. Finally hung up. Called back and the next person wasn't that nice either. I was told that an email will not cancel the subscription (funny their website wants you to contact hem through email) that it has to be by a phone call. They tried selling me other subscriptions. I had to get snotty and tell them to CANCEL it. Then he wanted to know why and I replied I didn't have to I've a reason. I had not taken the paper in years and was surprised to see how small it was. It only contains stuff that interested them and not reported correctly. My advice: NEVER TAKE THIS NEWSPAPER. You can see from all the other comments its a bad one. read more

All I wanted was a back issue from decades ago. I had tried their 'Live Chat' unsuccessfully but was given a phone number in the Philippines, that lady gave me a number that couldn't 'receive calls'. Got a number I found online and after several useless prompts & getting disconnected I had to leave a message at the News Room. Wonder where people are?? So 5 phone calls, still no one to talk to other than a clueless woman in the Philippines. Think they are the most un-people friendly business I have ever contacted! The only reason I gave the Statesman one star is because I wasn't given the option of No stars. For what one pays to subscribe to this paper, very little is received, even if the paper is delivered, which it isn't 20-30% of the time. If one calls the paper about non-delivery the paper boy retaliates by throwing the paper under vehicles, behind shrubs, in the street, etc. If you're reliant on a newspaper for local news such as obituaries, meeting notices, etc you have a real problem if you live in Salem. read more

The Statesman Journal is the first newspaper publication I had ever read. I started off with the daily comics and later progressed to the other sections of the paper as my interests become more varied. I eventually wound up as a semi-contributor and subject of a couple of articles. I never knew of what a small town (ok, city) paper it was till I became a subscriber to the Oregonian. As the internet became all the rage, the SJ folks also launched up a website that is still as cluttered and as hard to navigate as ever. Advertisements crowd the page as well the actual paper, I figured I would save a few trees by reading the website exclusively, but now I find that I don't read either of them at all. Whenever I get a chance to pick up a copy of the SJ, I try to read through as much of it as I can. Only nowadays, the articles are a little more dull than I remember and the writing is not up to par. Not to discredit the staff and its writers by any means, but there is only so much they can do to keep the loyal readers in check. Content quality and interesting articles always depend on the news coverage, perhaps there just isn't enough going on nowadays. Regardless, the SJ will always have a fond place in my heart and I'll still read whenever I have a chance to peruse one. read more

Statesman Journal's customer service is all directed to the Philippines now. There is a Statesman Journal Office in South Salem but no one answers the door! There is no local person you speak with. Their billing is the absolute worst. They deduct payments from your account without notice and increase monthly rates without notice. Then, you place a call to their Customer Service you speak to someone in the Philippines. Our neighbor who lives across the street from us has been paying $11.00 a month for a 7 day subscription. Explain that! As much as we enjoy reading our morning paper with our coffee, we will no longer subscribe to this newspaper. This is a big disappointment. read more

Best of mid valley awards... SCAM!! After winning they want us to pay almost $900 in order to use the logo stating that we won. After advertising with them previously, there is no way we'd spend another penny with them! They made us sign up with their website designers who can't design to save their lives! We went through 2 designers & eventually ended up with the "head designer" who still didn't create anything spectacular. We spent thousands of dollars & had to constantly remind them for changes, edits, & just making the site look presentable was like pulling teeth! We may as well have created the site ourselves & saved the money since we had to draw a layout on paper for them. All they did was input it into the computer! After confronting them about the poor website designing, Nicole then got defensive and attacked our business instead of just admitting what was very clear.. that their web designers sucked! Now, we were voted a winning spot in the Best Of Mid Valley contest just to find out that in order to advertise being a winner they want $900?! Just sad.. read more

Not only does this paper have nothing to interest me but on top of that when I went to cancel my subscription I was told I would get a free month if I gave them a chance...then I get my bill with NO free month. I also received spotty delivery, missing around 6 papers out of the 24 I should have received. To top it all off I NEVER was able to log on to their stupid online subscription, tried a million times and the lady of the other line was computer illiterate and unable to assist. This is awful, I didn't know they continued to charge me for MONTHS after I stopped receiving the paper, I asked for a refund since I didn't get the paper and they still charged me for it and they are going to "investigate" it. Statesman Journal has the worst delivery drivers I have EVER encountered. I have asked three times for them to stop throwing the paper out onto the wet parking lot, and yet they continue to do so, even though we have a huge awning next to the door under which the papers can be put. Our paper is SOAKING WET almost every day now and is unreadable/unusable. This isn't even at my home, this is at a very large law firm where our clients read the newspaper while sitting in the lobby. Thanks to the Statesman Journal's horrific customer service (not to mention the overseas call center employees every time I call to complain who say they will fix the problem but who never do), we receive soaking wet Statesman Journals and soaking wet Wall Street Journals on a regular basis. If I could give a "0" I would. We had a wonderful experience until our newspaper delivery person left. Then the replacement person not so good. The worst part trying to reach customer service. So when they don't answer their customer service phone, then you as a customer go online and tell them via email what the issue is. Simple however when you get a reply with a code and in that email it states someone will be in contact with you. Well that never happens. Finally I was able to reach a live person in customer service. Totally disrespectful. Instead of looking up the complaints, she wanted me to give her the dates and all the issues. Watch for scaming... I signed up for an 11 dollar a month subscription and was charged for it. Three days later I'm being charged Again! for 10.63. I call customer service, she is rude and insists I was only charged 10.63. I asked why I was charged this amount, as it's not even an available amount to sign up to be charged for. All she can tell me is that she doesn't have a reason. Now I have to take the time to print out my bank statement with the two charges days apart, and go there to straighten it out. I think the person who signed me up at Fred Meyers scammed me and took my 11 dollars then used my information to set up an actual account... thus why I'm charged twice. They are smart scammers too because the descriptions on the bank statement looks exactly alike, except for 1 letter. read more

I'm so disappointed. I submitted an obituary to be places the week before the celebration of life and waited to get a proof to approve through email and never got one. I called and they "missed it". I asked them to run it 2 or 3 weekdays for the price of one to make up for their screwup. She said she would talk to her manager. I then get an email saying they will run it the Wednesday before and then the day of the celebration of life for $280! No acknowledgement that they screwed up and nothing offered to make up for it. Never will I place an add in this paper and never will I recommend them. I will pass on the screw up and how they handled it with pleasure though. read more

Pathetic service. I echo the other sentiments expressed here about trying to cancel the subscription. My rate doubled in one month (with no explanation or prior notice). Since I was only subscribed to 2 papers per week (and many times never even received that..) I am trying to cancel. Every few days I get an email from a different "representative" that obviously didn't read the previous email. It is almost humorous at this point. But not really...I am going to have to contact my CC company to be sure payment is discontinued. Do yourself a favor and do NOT subscribe to the scam Statesman Journal. Ever. read more

I walked into a Fred Meyer's in Albany, OR, and a young lady at a small table asked if I was interested in subscribing. At first I said no, but there was a $5 gift card, and I had been buying $2 newspapers daily for a few weeks and decided to sign up. As I was, another woman walked past us and warned me not to, that she had never received her papers and a lot of trouble trying to get her money back. I should have listened. The young lady gave me her personal phone number, along with the number for the S-J, and told me to call her if I had any problems. The paper box was to be delivered a couple of days later, and the papers immediately afterwards. I never received the box, and never received a single paper. I called the young lady, she didn't answer, and her voice mail box was full, I called the S-J number and left messages (could never speak with a human being), and emailed them as well. I also called the manager at the Albany Fred Meyer's store, he relayed a personal story of his own, that he had to physically drive to the S-J offices in Salem to cancel!! Never received a single response from S-J, until I finally filed a complaint with the State of Oregon. A few weeks later, I had my money back, but the bigger issue is that these people continue to sell subscriptions, and until evidence is provided to the contrary, still have the same roadblocks in place to prevent people from complaining and cancelling and having their problems resolved. read more

The journal does not have a good way to cancel a subscription, and their customer service is horrible. The wait time to speak to an agent on the phone or online is 45-60 minutes. I've been hung up on twice because I didn't respond the second they finally answered my call. It took me two hours to finally cancel my subscription because I wasn't fast enough in responding and had to call back. Waiting on hold for that time has to be one of Dante's levels of hell. Furthermore, the agent wasn't even listening to why I wanted to cancel and pushed me to get a different subscription. Do not get a subscription to this paper unless you plan on having it the rest of your life or enjoy excruciating pain. read more

I ordered a subscription for my elderly father who has dementia and is living with me now almost a month ago. He needs a paper to hold in his hands as he's accustomed to this and it would be a small daily comfort to him. After calling numerous times and emailing, being called by their "escalation department" and even trying to visit their office (which is locked and inaccessible to the public) I still have no paper this morning (after numerous promises) Why is this so hard? Don't get scammed by this crooked company! I attended their extreme couponing seminar and signed up for 5 Sunday/Wednesday subscriptions. They promised to mail a $20 Fred Meyer gift card to all who signed up. It never came. Then after the 1st day of 5 papers I NEVER received 5 again....either 4 or none at all some days. So I call to get credit for missing papers and to cancel. After 48 minute wait with no live person, I try another number that gives an option for a call back. I get a call back from a ver nice rep, obviously a call center in the South. She can't find my account by my only phone #. When she does find my name, she says there are 2 different accounts in my name and reads off a phone # on one asking if I recognize it, which I don't. How suspicious is THAT?! Then we go through the fiasco of her trying to determine how many papers I missed despite me telling her exactly. After I politely refuse her offer for 6 months at half, she agrees to cancel and credit a refund. But when I ask fpr some type of confirmation number or other proof of our agreement, she transfers me to a less friendly supervisor who comes on and tells me my subscription is now paid up through the next month! (Which it already had been with the $21 charged to our account 2 days prior). When I re-state that I want to cancel, she says they don't give refunds for less than $10. After she rechecks and sees recent charge she states I will receive an electronic refund within 7 business days but still gives no confirmation of this promise. After sharing this on Facebook a friend tells me it's been a month since they cancelled for missing papers and still no refund, so I won't hold my breath. We all need to band together and do something to expose these crooks who took over our once local paper. read more

We have been trying for 3 days to cancel our subscription. We have been increasingly disappointed by the low quality of the paper. Other than the laughs provided by the mistakes in articles due to lack of proofreading, there is nothing much of interest in this paper. Service is terrible. When we have put temporary vacation stops on delivery we are usually charged extra, rather than having our account credited. Delivery is usually late and newspapers are sometime so wet that they have turned to a mass of pulp which falls apart so that none of it is readable. There is no option on the website to cancel a subscription. The hold times on the phone are very long and the hold times for chat are also long. Waited over an hour one day, only to be disconnected. There is no response to emails. The last straw was the raise in rate to $50 a month. We have already subscribed to a different paper, and if the Statesman Journal fails to respond to our multiple requests to cancel, we will notify our bank not to process any more payments to them. If I could have given a lower rating than one star I would have given them several negative stars. Oh dear! More ads than in any other paper I've ever read. More bad editorials. More attention to obits. Yawn Yawn Yawn. My 82 year old father, 92 year old mother in law and myself plus countless others as you can clearly ascertain. Call and they will say it's cancelled. Send you yet another bill, call again, another bill, send you to collections, get the run around. Horrendous non existent customer service. Extort the elderly and keep sending past due subscription notices to keep up the circulation! Seems to be the only way they can seem to keep subscribers is by scamming them and not canceling subscriptions when notified to do so. What else should I expect from a third rate periodical.
