It's very easy to get cynical about city government in Baltimore but my limited experiences (never had an actual fire thank god) with these guys has been great. The first time I needed them someone at our house was having a medical emergency. They responded quickly and seemed like serious professionals when they got here. More recently we had a false fire alarm at our house and because we were not home the alarm company dispatched the fire department to see what was going on. Unfortunately they had to bust into our house but they were careful to do it in a way that caused minimal damage and did not leave the house vulnerable to being broken into until we got home. When I spoke with one of the responding fire fighters on the phone to explain the false alarm situation he was super-nice about it and not at all unpleasant about the fact that they'd wasted their time over a twitchy smoke detector.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people who live in Loudoun County have no idea that their tax money doesn't actually pay for career staff 24/7, let alone the equipment and apparatuses needed to save lives. So that's where we step in. We're your friends, your neighbors, your co-workers, and we're here to serve the community (and drive really fast while doing it)! Chances are, if you call 9-1-1 between 1800 and 0600 hours, the folks who will show up at your door to put our your fire, check for a gas leak, or care for you on your way to the hospital are only getting paid in personal pride for giving back to the community. Most people know that the fire station is where our shiny yellow engines and ladder trucks are quartered. Many people also know that we're a joint department - so we have ambulances as medics as well. But that's not all! Our primary Station 6 (we have two: Stations 6 and 23) serves as a bastion for the community, hosting open houses, monthly pancake breakfasts, Mother's Day breakfasts, spaghetti dinners, and our Founders Hall is often rented out for private events. Our volunteer staff go through literally hundreds of hours of book and practical training before being released as firefighters and/or emergency medical technicians. We're constantly brushing up on our skills, and during our duty crew nights you can often find us around town doing practice drills. Our people come from all walks of life - most of us have full-time day jobs ranging from consultants to construction workers to students, and everything in between. Once a month they do a pancake breakfast, usually the 1st Sunday of the month. They have all the fixings. Eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, hash browns, biscuits, sausage gravy, yogurt, coffee, and juices. It's very cheap and it all goes to help the station. There is also a kiddie section for kids to do crafts. Come during December and Santa will be there for pictures. So check out their calendar every month on their website and see when the next one is. It's one less weekend meal you have to worry about. Get there early as it can get packed at times.

We visited the Hampton National Historic Site in Towson this past weekend. This estate was owned by…read morethe Ridgely family for 7 generations from 1745 to 1948. The Georgia mansion home was the largest private home in America when it was completed in 1790. The estate was a plantation, one of the largest in Maryland, and hundreds of people were enslaved at the plantation until the end of the Civil War. The property is operated by the National Park Service, so a park ranger gives guided tours of the property. Our ranger guide was really friendly and did a wonderful job guiding us through the house. She taught us about the history of the area, the family, and the estate. She taught us about the architecture of the house and the artifacts visible throughout the house (many of which are original to the home). She also highlighted the lives and stories of enslaved persons who spent part or the entirety of their lives at Ridgely. There is some important Maryland history here at Hampton, and I really appreciated our experience. The house is undergoing some renovations right now and we were a bit tight on time, so we weren't able to explore the grounds (I think you can visit the slave quarters, cemetery, and more on the grounds), so I'd like to go back and explore more of the site's history. As an NPS property, it's free to visit and tour and definitely worth checking out. It's history hidden in plain sight - you've probably driven past it many times without stopping by!

We took a lovely train ride in a historic railcar from New Freedom to Glen Rock which is about a half hour. The conductor pointed out notable sites along the way. We then enjoyed a fabulous high tea at Table 1837 Glen Rock Mill Inn. There was so much to eat that we left with a doggie bag. There were only 3 choices of tea but the salted caramel was delicious. They had 4 finger sandwiches, 2 scones and fruit. We also received a grilled chicken salad as an entree accompanied by a glass of wine (there were 3 choices of wine. Originally we were offered mimosa but then they ran out of orange juice). For dessert, we had Pots du Crème. We boarded the train and headed back to New Freedom. I'd definitely recommend and intend on doing another event in the future.

Plenty of free parking right outside the gift shop/museum (handicapped parking, too). We browsed the gift shop first--lots of train-lover trinkets, and of course, Adventure Buddy snagged a couple of those irresistible 3D wooden train models. I was over the moon when check-in handed us oversized souvenir tickets--complete with our traincar and seats punched out. Such a fun keepsake! The small museum next door took maybe 15 minutes but was nicely done and staffed by a friendly volunteer. After a quick pit stop, we boarded the D. Reed Anderson car. The open windows made for a breezy ride past pretty scenery--green trees, a creek, even small towns like Glen Rock where folks waved from porches. Actors in full Civil War character moved through the cars during the ride, building the story of Union vs. Confederate soldiers battling over rumored gold. At times it was hard to hear or follow the storyline depending on where you sat, but the big skirmish at the park--cannon blasts, musket fire, and all--was definitely the highlight. Tickets were $31.99 and worth it for a few hours of history-meets-theater-meets-train ride fun. This is a great daytrip for adults (grab lunch before and ice cream after nearby). Kids would love the trains, but younger ones may struggle with the length of this particular event. We'll definitely be back in the fall for one of their seasonal rides!

Not sure if Covid is the excuse right now but this place has been horrible the entire month of…read moreJuly, since my loved one entered and was denied bail pending hearing. He was locked down on what was supposed to be a 23/1 schedule for 14 days (quarantine upon arrival). 23 hours locked in your cell and one hour out to shower, make commissary orders, watch TV, or make a phone call. Those policies were not followed. The unit holds up to 23 inmates. There are currently 36 inmates. each inmate gets 1 hr outside their cell. There is only 24 hours in a day, so inmates are being locked down 36+ hours before getting a 1 hour break. That should be illegal. Next, The food they serve will make you starve yourself. No one knows what the meet is, and some are smart enough to request a vegetarian diet. Just be prepared that your first few weeks of vegetarian diet trays will be nothing but a block of cheese, two slices of bread, and a couple plain noodles - oh! And a boiled egg. That's your meal morning noon and night for 2+ weeks! Don't get me started on the phone system. To add $50 to a phone plan it will cost you $10 in fees. You are charged at a rate of $.16 per minute, you get 15 minute intervals. Although apparently some area codes only get charged $.10 per minute, so I'm really not sure why but the explanation I received from IC solutions was that it depends on the area code of the phone number of the account. Makes no sense. The bigger problem with the phones is that while you're in the middle of speaking, the phone will cut off and tell the inmate it was disconnected due to a three-way call detected. There is no three-way call being made! The CO's claim the phones inside are jacked and need repairing every other day. When your phone call gets cut off you lose the rest of the seconds that you had remaining of the minute you were on. During one 15 minute span, our phone call was cut off nine times. That cost us 9 mins right there, and that happens daily. In three weeks time that phone system has cost me over 300 minutes total ($48 I should be refunded but they refuse). All inmates get two free 15 minute phone calls on Sundays. If their phone screws up during their call and it cuts them off, they lose the rest of the time, they do not get a call back and use up the remaining of the 15 minutes, it's gone. They will not let my loved one out on bail for non-violent charges (and he is a productive member of the community), but yet a 20 something-year-old who molested a three-year-old gets out on bail. Makes zero sense. The only good report I give the place is that the CO's are truly decent people, they have emotions and understanding. they are not yet desensitized by the system. The system itself is desensitized and doesn't give a shit about inmates, guilty or innocent. but the CO's do, The CEOs actually put in complaints themselves when the inmates are not receiving the meals they should be, and they try to help them out with guidance with their charges and what not. I know my loved one is thankful for them. I had my first experience as a visitor there today for visiting hours. I was told inmates used to get one hour visits but now they only receive 30 minute visits because 30 minutes of their visit time is now being used to clean the visiting booths between visits. I'm sorry to say that is complete BS - there were lip/kiss marks on the glass in my booth, I didn't even want to touch the phone but it was the only way to speak with my loved one behind the glass. The visiting booths DO NOT GET CLEANED!!! This place needs an inspection and needs to stop being lazy

I just had a bad experience with the persons at the BINGO WINDOW to buy packets. *********** My niece wanted to come back to Bingo, so we did last night (Friday night). Arrived at the FD around 7:06PM. There was no "temp check" when we walked in , so we followed the "social distancing" markings to arrive at the window to pick up bingo cards. This time there was a man and woman there. When we asked for 2 cards we were told they were $18 and a pack of the special was like $4. I asked, did the price go up because we came a few weeks ago and only paid $11 for a small card. The lady said its always been that price. So i said, does the price make a difference on certain nights? (We came on a Saturday the first time). She said no. Then I said, well I can't play a card that seemed like 40 cards (We're still pretty new to this). She then said they have a smaller card that was like $15. I told her again we only paid $11 before and the card was much smaller to our liking. About 2 minutes or so of going back and forth we just decided to leave. Whoever she and he were, lacked customer service and honestly we think they were trying to get us to pay more than what it was. Either they were trying to get over or the woman who was working the window gave us the card at a cheaper rate. Plus, the first time we came you can get a free bingo dabber- which none of that was set up last night. Not sure if it was a different org. having bingo on different nights or what, but everything was off. Even the vibe in the bingo hall. We're so disappointed because we really enjoyed your first time there and will likely not return based on the interaction with the window persons. I wrote my first review of this a few weeks ago, so check that out with the details to understand how our first time there was Epic, compared to the Ish show that was shown last night.
