We enjoyed a wonderful meal and a few pints overlooking the historic stone bridge over the River Tyne. The Angel is easy walking distance to the Corbridge Rome Town. After good night sleep and a hearty breakfast, we were off on the hike. The hotel staff ensured our bags were marked and loaded in the vans to be transported to the next hotel. The Angel Inn takes excellent care of travelers. Hope to return again.

We were in town for a nearby wedding and found the hotel a pleasant space to rest and get ready. No complaints. It's probably about the "fanciest" you'll get in Hexham and very centrally located. Its walking distance (though a bit of a hike) from the train station. The bathroom in particular was newly updated, and though oddly-shaped, spacious and the soaking tub a great comfort after a long journey! *£129 weekend (fall) rate *family owned and operated *nice staff *very clean and tidy *breakfast is AOK. I'd stay again. Again, its not fancy - but it'll get the job done!

The rooms were spacious and very comfortable with a lovely big bed, nice big TV and nice bathroom. The dinner menu and snack menu had plenty of options and breakfast had a cooked option and continental which included fresh fruits, fruit in bowls (presumably from cans), toast and spreads, yoghurt, cereals and juices. It's perfectly located in the centre of town, close to pretty much everything with a lovely park just across the road and the Hexham cathedral just down the road. The station is close also. The grounds are picturesque and surrounded by a very large golf course. We were upgraded upon our arrival to a premier room, which was a lovely surprise. The package I booked included dinner, bed & breakfast plus 2 spa treatments and access to the leisure centre, pool and sauna facilities. I've posted pictures of the room itself - old fashioned but HUGE and very comfy. I didn't get any photos of the leisure facilities unfortunately but they were very modern and the pool was the PERFECT temperature at all times. We had our evening meal at the Library & Print Room restaurant. They provided us with complementary champagne for my husband's birthday and some lovely canapés in the Print Room whilst we browsed the menu. My husband had the cheese soufflé and the 'Matfen Hall' Fillet. Both of his selections were out of this world - very tasty and succulent. I had the duck salad to start ( a bit too much going on there, not well balanced) and the pork belly as my main. The pork was perfectly cooked and well seasoned. I would have been completely happy with it if I hadn't tasted my husband's fillet. After a bite of his steak, everything else paled in comparison - definitely worth the £5 extra he had to pay for it over our inclusive allowance. The other great thing about the restaurant was the service was incredible - I can't say enough about how well trained and attentive the staff were. The desserts, however, lacked the same quality of the earlier entrees and we were both left wishing we had just had some cheese instead of the tall & skinny crème brulee or the too-sour lime cheese cake with chocolate rice krispies base (yes, I said rice krispies!). The next morning we had a very pleasant and yummy breakfast in the Library restaurant, followed by a day of leisure at the poolside. We took advantage of the spa treatments on both days and were very impressed with the quality of the facilities and staff. For the money you pay, the massages, facials, pedicures, etc. are luxurious and indulgent but also a good value for such high-class treatment in my opinion. This place is a golfer's paradise as well. Neither of us enjoy golf, so we didn't partake but I can see why it draws golfer's from all over - so pristine & quiet out there. There is a Go Ape obstacle course facility nearby as well, although I don't think it's open in the winter. Matfen Hall is a very quiet, serene place. I don't think it would be good for people with small children but it's excellent for couples. Definitely will return to Matfen Hall. The whole experience was class.

We stayed at the Battlesteads Hotel in August 2011 while walking Hadrian's Wall. Prior to the start…read moreof our walk, we were informed that when we reached Chesters Roman Fort and Museum, we should call the Battlesteads, and someone would pick us up and drive us to the hotel. However, when we called we were told it would be at least an hour before someone could come by, a bit off-putting considering we had been walking for several hours and simply wanted to shower and relax. We ended up hitching a ride with a tour group who was also staying at the hotel (we met their very kind bus driver at the tea room at Chesters), and were shown to a very small room that overlooked someone else's front yard. The room itself was comfortable, but so small there was no where to put our luggage. We simply had to step over our suitcases to move to either side of the bed. The bathroom was a bit of a surprise because it had a more modern look, complete with gray, rubbery floors. It certainly did the job, but the accommodations were not posh by any means (and I was not expecting luxury). After our showers, we had a few drinks in the garden before meeting a friend for dinner in the pub. The garden was lovely - the flowers were still very much in bloom, and a wooden fence around the property provided privacy from neighbors. It's my understanding that the pub uses fruits and vegetables grown in the garden. Dinner, on the other hand, was not what I expected from an award-winning pub (my partner informed me that the Battlesteads was "Pub of the Year" in 2010). The hake and chips was rather bland and the mushy peas did not boost the flavour profile. It seemed to me that Battlesteads was trying too hard to appear cosmopolitan, rather than focusing on good food and flavour. I appreciate locally sourced food, but it has to taste good as well.

The Wi-Fi offered good signal strength in all areas and worked very well. Bedrooms were refurbished in 2018, I was told. During my stay the kitchen was being refurbished and the menu was limited but all the same the food was very good. The staff were very obliging and helpful and nothing was too much trouble, arranging taxis, variations on the menu, luggage storage and offering local knowledge. Meals are served in the bar, there isn't a separate restaurant. The bar has a real fire in winter and is a normal pub bar with a pool table in part of the bar that seems to be mainly used by locals. Breakfast was very good although no fruit was provided. The location is 3-4 miles north of Hexham. The bus service is infrequent but reliable, from very close to the hotel to Hexham station and town centre. Taxis are quite expensive, but I found the hotel charges here to be much more reasonable than in Hexham, so there was a saving to be had by staying out of town. A new management is evidently working very hard on the kitchen and other improvements. I would definitely recommend this place.

The meals were perfection, the grounds were beautiful. The peacock was the only noise we heard through the thick castle walls. I wish they had warned us about the large group they were serving for breakfast at the same time as our chosen time, we would have selected a time before or after had we known, breakfast was a 25 minute delay from seating to getting drinks.
