Of all the statues along North Terrace in the city I think one of my all time favourites is the statue of Dame Roma Mitchell just outside of Government House.
As a woman who broke ground in so many areas during her life, here she sits now, still breaking ground in her relaxed pose. While many of the other North Terrace works of art are regal looking men in sombre poses, here is Dame Roma relaxing in a chair as she watches the passing parade of North Terrace traffic.
Roma Mitchell was the first Australian woman to be made a Justice of the Supreme Court of SA in 1965. She was Chancellor of the University of Adelaide from 1983 - 1990 and was Governor of South Australia from 1991 - 1996. While these were all very important roles, it was perhaps her role as a champion for the women's rights and her deep seated social conscience that held her in the highest regard.
The Dame Roma Mitchell statue was sculpted by Janette Moore and unveiled in July 1999 around a year before her passing in March 2000. One can only assume she must have approved of this outstanding landmark. read more
