To visit Varenna (which is lovely) continue past the boat ramp, follow the waterside walkway and take a Contrada up to the main square or stay on the waterside to enjoy the shops and cafes there.] The train station is older and has 2 tracks. We take the regional train from Milan which returns on track#2. If you get to the station early there is a small indoor waiting area off the main platform with seats and arrivals board, or sit outside on the few benches available there. You could also enjoy a beverage in the bar but we aware: the bathroom, located in a separate building, is not a place for a lady. Bring your own TP and sanitary hand wipes and be prepared to hover. Honestly, the train bathroom is a better choice.

We choose Villa Cipressi because it was closer. It was very gorgeous, we took plenty of photos, enjoyed beautiful lake view seating in a nice shade. Walk from ferry its very simple but its uphill so bring water with you. We went in September and still it was very hot and sunny. There is not so much shade there either. Also you can hike to Castello di Vezio to get beautiful view of the village but be aware it's very steep. It takes around 40 minutes. Also while walking you will see beautiful narrow streets, water views , little church and small stores & restaurants. After that we hoped on other ferry to go to Menaggio. You can visit all of these places within a 1 day like we did.

I highly recommend to buy tickets not at the machine because many were broken and glitch, but instead wait in the line inside at SBB office. they help us to purchase first class train ride to Zurich! but on the way back to Milan I purchase wrong tickets and we had to leave the train after they checked our tickets. Again so many different train companies that I got confused. Also platforms may change so watch out. Also we had ticino card provided by our hotel and we had all public transport for free. Was so convenient, we could even use funicular for free instead of taking steps.

The scenic train is located across the tracks and down a flight of stairs. We purchased our tickets as part of the boat expedition but you can take the scenic train w/o the boat ride and purchase your tickets at the counter also located in the underground station. This is not the ticket window in the main station. Walk around the end of the tracks and there is a covered stair case going down. This is where you purchase your ticket for the scenic train. It makes many stops at very remote areas and take in beautiful scenery. If you are not taking the scenic train, there are ticket windows and ticket machines in the main terminal as well as waiting area and a coffee shop is nearby.

Como is a pretty small city and I wouldn't mind staying a couple of days on our next trip to the area. I did see a train heading to Zurich from there as the northern area of Italy neighbors Switzerland. For a small town Como is pretty much swamped with visitors and with no airport the railway station is the main transportation hub. 4 star railway station that does the job close to the city which is very walkable.
