Milano Centrale is a beautiful station, but it's also incredibly busy. There are people everywhere, trains constantly arriving and departing, and the departure boards can be overwhelming if it's your first time navigating an Italian train station. I was trying to catch a train that was leaving soon, and reading the departure board while figuring out which platform I needed was a little stressful. I asked a few people for help, but they either couldn't or didn't want to assist me. Thankfully, I eventually found a very kind station employee who pointed me in the right direction, and I literally made my train by the skin of my teeth! If you're visiting from the United States, don't assume it's as simple as walking in a few minutes before departure. Give yourself at least 30 minutes and honestly 45 minutes if it's your first time. That extra time will let you: Find your train on the departure board. Confirm your platform (track). Navigate the station without rushing. Avoid the stress of missing your train. Arrive even earlier to shop! Once I got on board, everything was smooth, but those first few minutes in the station definitely had my heart racing! **My tip:** Take a deep breath, arrive early, and don't wait until the last minute. It'll make your train experience much more enjoyable.

We did notice that there are a good number of restaurants, shops and cafes for travelers, and we did end up stopping for a focaccia sandwich each before our next train pulled in. On our first stop in, the city experienced a hail storm, which was loud against the metal roof of the station. It came out of nowhere, and went as quickly as it came. It was loud and a little startling, but pretty dang cool. It's easy to navigate and find your necessary platforms, and it's clean and feels safe. The staff was friendly and seemed attentive to the people walking around.

This is definitely the case for the Genova Piazza Principe, which is very close to the Cruise Boat Port and near many restaurants that serve both transportation hubs. We arrived around lunch time on a Saturday from Ventiglia around 12:20 pm. We grabbed some lunch from a nearby restaurant, and came back around 1:30, and found a place outside to sit. Sitting outside pretty much means being near cigarette smoke. We were going to Pisa, and they announced the track about an hour before arrival. There was an elevator from the tunnel underneath (each track has their own). Ground level is always 0 in Europe and the basem ent levels are -1. (no G or B here). The train to Pisa had a final destination of Rome, so a lot of people had luggage for the weekend. The train came to Track 20 at 2:42 for a 3:01 departure, so we had plenty of time to find our assigned seats. There was space for our luggage overhead, and our American size luggage fit fine. We left at precisely 3:01, and made the following stops. We noticed that at each stop, they allowed 3 - 5 minute layover to allow people to easily get in and out with luggage. 3:05 Genova Brignole - left at 3:10 3:29 Rapallo. Left at 3:36 3:42 Chiavari. Left at 3:44 4:22 La Spezia Centrale. Left at 4:24 4:41: Massa Centro. Left at 4:43 4:52: Viareggio. Left at 4:53 5:07: Pisa Centrale. Left at 5:09 This definitely did inspire for future trips to know that we could take a train into Rome from France. The trip cost 11,9€ each.

Como is a pretty small city and I wouldn't mind staying a couple of days on our next trip to the area. I did see a train heading to Zurich from there as the northern area of Italy neighbors Switzerland. For a small town Como is pretty much swamped with visitors and with no airport the railway station is the main transportation hub. 4 star railway station that does the job close to the city which is very walkable.

The scenic train is located across the tracks and down a flight of stairs. We purchased our tickets as part of the boat expedition but you can take the scenic train w/o the boat ride and purchase your tickets at the counter also located in the underground station. This is not the ticket window in the main station. Walk around the end of the tracks and there is a covered stair case going down. This is where you purchase your ticket for the scenic train. It makes many stops at very remote areas and take in beautiful scenery. If you are not taking the scenic train, there are ticket windows and ticket machines in the main terminal as well as waiting area and a coffee shop is nearby.

In this…read morecase, we decided to exercise the cheaper (and more adventurous) tack of train-chasing the Train de Pignes. Starting with a bit of lolly-gagging around station in Puget-Théniers while paying customers boarded the train, then racing up the road toward Entrevaux and Annot in hopes of a few photo-ops of all the huffing and puffing! Amazing! These rails are actually a commuter line that runs from Nice up to the city of Digne-les-Bains, which by the way, would be worth the trip just to ride up this scenic route in the daily diesel powered rail-cars. But on Sundays in the summertime, they fire up this old steam locomotive (apparently built in the 20s in Cassel, Germany) and make the twenty-kilometer run from Puget-Théniers to Annot - Maybe not the best part of the run, but a very good part of the run. We had just done a steam train ride in Provence a few days before, so we didn't have the compunction to buy a ticket to ride on this one. But had we done so, we would have missed out on the chance to photograph the 'little-engine-that-does.' I'm sure it's a great view from the train, and I suspect we'll buy a ticket and ride it one day, but just seeing that living, breathing locomotive pull the train up this gorge is one of life's richest moments. Ride it. Chase it. Photograph it. But only on Sundays! Worth planning your holiday around this! And much safer than the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona!
