Vintage rooms with high ceilings. I checked in a little after 5, (you go to the restaurant on the first floor and they call the owner) and he came right away. He showed me to my room which I thought was cute and cozy...and I settled right in. (thank goodness for air conditioning). Please be aware that you will have to carry your own items up to the 2nd floor, there is no elevator. Otherwise, it was quiet and charming. I am a sucker for historical buildings and this one did not disappoint! While loading up my car the outside door lock's battery died and I couldn't get back in the building to get the rest of my things, but as soon as I reported it, they fixed it. We (myself, my wife and our dog) had reservations to stay one night at the Steam Train Hotel on May 18, 2025 to attend a funeral for a family member in the area. At first we were pleased with the accommodative nature of Teagan one of the husband wife team that manages the hotel. Upon arrival we called to check in as the hotel no longer has a lobby as it was leased to a restaurant. Essentially your check in begins in the parking lot when Paul brought out our invoice and was going to show us around. When Paul saw our dog, Paul informed us to be careful in the back part of the hotel area as there were neighborhood dogs that roamed around and could be dangerous. We were escorted up some outdoor steps to the door on the second floor to the hallway where most of the rooms are. Later that afternoon, my sister and her husband arrived to also check in. Upon opening the door to our room, I noticed a larger dog inside the hall that I was not familiar with ( Paul's dog) and our dog came out of our room and was approached by the larger dog "Luna". Our dog went to the door and was followed by Paul's dog after Paul attempted to block his dog and almost immediately attacked our dog and would not let go of her as she tried to escape his grip and constant biting. My wife had already started to try to get our dog loose and had fallen under a nearby table. I was able to pull her out of the way and eventually pull our dog loose from Paul's dog. The result was my wife received several dog bites that I believe came mostly from Paul's dog and our dog was bitten numerous times on the back of her neck area. While Paul checked while we were cleaning the blood from my wife's and our dog's wounds, not once during the remaining time we were there did Paul reach out to see how we were doing. I did see Teagan the following day and while she did not bring up the incident, I did bring it up and she said she was sorry. Little did I know that Paul's warning about neighborhood dogs should have included his own dog. We attended our funeral services and returned home to obtain medical treatment for both my wife and our dog. This was one disgusting experience and obviously will never ever use this hotel, which may not matter as the hotel was recently put up for sale. read more

Cute, funky hotel. Rooms are small, bathroom small, but our room was clean and had the essentials. Common area outside and another common room inside, not fancy but comfortable. Yes, the walls and windows are thin, but other guests were respectful and place was fairly quiet. Train station is just a block away. Hosts were helpful. read more

I was not a fan of the cramped room, lack of hot water or the weak toilet flush. However, the only other hotel in town was booked and I appreciate what they're trying to do with the antique décor. This establishment is 420 friendly and I dont think the family across the hall knew that, so be aware before you stay here. You should also be aware that there are two buildings and only one room is on the first floor. There are no elevators, so you will have to use the outside stairs to access your room. I didn't care for lugging stuff up the stairs in the heat of the afternoon or in the cold of the morning. I did think the rooftop patio was a nice touch though. When you get to the top of the stairs, there is a code to enter the building which I think had 6 or so rooms. The code is given at check in. The hallway is pretty dark during the day. They have a selection of books and movies on a shelf you can help yourself to. The modern tv screens on the walls feel out of place with the antique décor, but I'm sure many people will appreciate it. I won't be returning, but I see how this could appeal to a lot of people. It's cute and it has its charm if you're in the right mood. I found it beyond annoying that we had no shelf space to put anything down. But my lines in the sand are typically related to strong water pressure and having enough towels. Considering the water never got warm in the morning and we were close to our destination, I finally just skipped the shower. I'm a laid back girl and I'll go camping with my husband and I'll hike if you make me, but I ain't taking a cold shower. Breakfast was a cute setup and they had coffee and tea available. The wooden tables were nice. If you do have breakfast there, selection is small- several options each of pastries, fruit, yogurt, cereal and oatmeal. The morning we were there the hot items were bacon, hash browns and eggs. However, the food was lukewarm and this was 5 minutes after breakfast had been put out. Nothing to knock them for, but you may want to go across the street for breakfast. The staff was friendly, I'm just not a fan of paying $118 to walk up a bunch of stairs to a cramped room without modern plumbing. To each their own. read more

Three times I emailed management on 9/30, 10/1 and 12/18 to express the complaint and concern with someone's dried blood on my pillows. I woke up with my mouth on a partially covered pillow that had dried blood on it, there is no way housekeeping could have missed all of the blood when they put a pillowcase over it. I try to avoid bad reviews, I would much prefer to reach out to the owners to make them aware of the problem so they have an opportunity to correct it. After months of emailing and leaving phone messages they never even responded. I even sent photos. I spent nearly $100 for a filthy rundown room only to have my sleeping mouth on a bloodstain. This threatens the health of their patrons and they don't have the decency to respond? Shameful! read more

I was a little hesitant to stay here based upon the mixed reviews but I decided to anyway. The owner Paul was very accommodating with my late check in and gave us a tour of the whole building. Contrary to previous reviews, I did not find the space crammed and it did not lack in water pressure. In the morning Paul provides myself with coffee as well as muffins and other breakfast items from the store free of charge. I would highly recommend staying at the Steam Train Hotel as it was clean and comfortable not to mention Paul is incredibly polite and nice. read more

It was overpriced for what it had to offer. The small window unit did not cool the room. The bed was springy like a bounce house. The pillow was paper thin. No chair in the room so you either sat on the potty or bed. I feel that $38/night would be fair. read more

Unique place and a lot of fun. Very much a small town feel with friendly personalities/staff and eclectic decor in the room. A bit dated overall but you'd be hard pressed to find a cooler spot in the local community. Be sure to visit the local scenery including the steam trains nearby....one of which was used in the film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Recommend staying here! read more

Booked the hotel for a two night stay because we were taking the family on the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad day trip and of course we were from out of town. As soon as we saw the hotel I knew I'd made a fatal mistake because the woman who promised me a room big enough to accommodate my elderly mother and her service dog and my daughter was already taken by another person. The woman never showed up at the hotel but her husband Paul who is very nice, was there and did his best to accommodate us. He ended up giving us two rooms for the price of one for the first night which was very nice, however even at that screaming deal the place was a dump. The rooms were dirtier than I've ever seen a hotel room ... they didn't look like they never been dusted, and dirt and grime as everywhere. The beds alone were a nightmare. Creaky old spring mattresses from probably decades ago that we're extremely uncomfortable, stained and smelly. The sheets on every single bed where wrinkled and had not been cleaned probably in weeks. They literally wreaked of body odor from dozens of other people and musty old perfume. The pillows were thin and smelly and probably hadn't been washed in years. Because there was no other hotel available in the area, we had to stay there at least the first night because our train was departing the next morning. The bed was so smelly that I literally took a cardigan sweater from my suitcase and wrapped it around the pillow to quell the stench, and I grabbed a coat to wrap around me to protect me from the smelly sheets. I did not pull the blanket up over me because it was so disgusting and gross! One of the rooms had a kitchenette area and there were dishes that someone had supposedly cleaned that were laying next to the sink that still had food on them. There was old food in the fridge including some beer. The kitchen area was grimy and disgusting. The deep tubs would have been inviting however they were covered in sticky grime that probably hadn't been cleaned in months. The room had sick stale air in it and just smelled to high heaven. The heater in one of the rooms wasn't working and of course it was the room my mother was in, so awesome Paul came up and worked on fixing it and also helped us get our TV working and he was one of the nicest people I've ever met, but his wife was nowhere to be seen and I can only imagine that she is a big problem with why this place is so run down. As soon as we woke up the next morning, we packed our bags and left for the train with no intention of returning to the hotel even though we booked a second night. When I told Paul we weren't going to stay the second night he apologized that our stay wasn't as good as we had expected and I told him basically it is what it is and he said he would try to get me a refund on the the second night's stay. I hope I do get a refund but if not, I'm just so glad I'm not back in that smelly place and one can only hope the wife gets her act together and starts cleaning the place and getting it up to speed. Antonito is a very economically depressed small town out in the middle of nowhere and it's sad that businesses like this do not take pride in what they have to offer. I would recommend for anyone who is going to partake of the awesome Cumbres and Toltec railroad trip, that they stay in Alamosa which is about 30 minutes out of town. Alamosa offers all the major hotels that one could enjoy staying at. Good luck out there! read more

Made a reservation in June for a 1 night stay for a wedding 8/18/18. Called on 8/17/18 to verify reservation. Was told because of plumbing issues some travelers had to be moved to another hotel they would call me back. Hotel called back and stated it was not because of plumbing issues they had overbooked the hotel and we where to be moved to the other hotel. Other hotel was not a very suitable hotel. Asked since I made the reservation 2 months ago why would we being moved. Hotel stated they would call me back. Never received a call back. Had to make a reservation at another hotel further away. Hotel Hell. Our family rented several rooms in this hotel. All the rooms as well as the common area were in need of a very deep cleaning. The dirt and grime in this place was as old as the antiques themselves. Especially dirty was room 15. It wreaked of black mold and dog urine. When we asked management for cleaning services we were handed a mop and broom and told that we should seek other lodging. The cleaning staff commented that this room was uncleanable. My aunt swept up a gob of dog hair from underneath the beds. We could not see ourselves in the bathroom mirror because it was very dirty as was the rest of the bathroom. There was no lightbulb in the lamp, the entry door was hard to lock, and we had to stand on top of a chair to turn off the fan. I was also concerned about fire escape issues. Management got upset when we asked for cleaning and complained that they were losing money because they had to feed us breakfast. I do not recommend this hotel. read more

I read the other reviews and wish I could write a good one because the husband and wife who are running this hotel were very nice and accommodating, and a couple of other staff members were also very friendly. First, I reserved a room with two beds and was told there was one in each room but when we arrived, there was one very small bedroom with no window or a/c. The second bed was a couch and they gave us sheets and blanket for the couch in the main room. The place was clean enough I guess, but the bathtub had a panel off laying on the floor, there was no stopper in the sink and the heat register was hanging off, icky bathroom! The TV had to be fixed several times by the owner but he graciously said to call him if we needed anything else; btw there was no phone in the room. The breakfast was advertised as follows: "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. That's what mama said and mama's always right. We won't let you board that train, or whatever adventure awaits, without a good, hot, traditional breakfast." I'll attach px of the breakfast :-( !! They tell the story of the breakfast neither of us touched. I think this is the only hotel in town so there are no other options that we could find or we would have relocated immediately. read more

We had booked this hotel because of the close proximity to the Cumbres Toltec RR. Upon arrival, we soon realized we had made a huge error in judgement. Access to the rooms are up 20 steps, located on the outside of the building. The room had 2 double beds, which is what we had requested. The room was dinging, not well lite and had a musty perfume smell. If you have an hip or orthopedic issue, getting into the old, high sided tub would surely create an additional predicament, with no safety bars available to assist. The room offered little in comfort, with 2 high back willow wicker chairs for seating. But, if you have an interest in marijuana purchase, we were told that the propreitor of the hotel owned the dispensary across the street and 420 friendly rooms were available. Sorry, but we were not interested. Unfortunately, we had booked the room via Expedia. We had not cancelled 24 hours prior to check in, and was denied a refund by the manager So, we drove 30 miles to Alamosa, where we found a clean room with friendly staff and the usual amenities one expects from a hotel. Also, the Holiday Inn Express in Alamosa was $40.00 less than the Steam Train Hotel. read more

Once I was checked in, he asked what time I wanted breakfast, and the next morning we met for friendly conversation over breakfast .. What a pleasant stay! I LOVED my stay at this hotel!! I stayed in room 2, which has a huge jet tub!!! (Amazing!!!) I loved the decor of the entire hotel. It's decorated in old antiques, which totally gives it the old western feel. It's awesome, there's kind of a "community hallway" where instead of some long empty hallway with old gross carpet that you find in any chain hotel, there's old hardwood floors, antique sitting chairs made out of wagon wheels, other cool antiques, a big movie rack where you can snag DVDs to watch on your own personal DVD player and flat screen tv in your room, and even a microwave and fridge for those guests that don't stay in the rooms with kitchens. My room had a full kitchen, complete with all the dishes I'd need, coffee pot, full size fridge, oven, etc... Very nice. The staff was great too! Jeanie checked me in and was super nice, she actually walked me up to my room and let me in. And in the morning I got a hot breakfast. They actually take your order and cook it for you! (All complimentary of course.) No nasty powdered eggs in a buffet tray at this place!! The maintenance guy even gave me a tour of the entire place! There's an old bank vault right down stairs, very cool! I got to go inside! And I got to see inside all the unoccupied rooms. Each room has a slightly different theme and different antique decor. It's awesome!!! We went and looked at the Indiana Jones house too, which was also very cool. Some of the movie was actually filmed there, so they have lots of neat memorabilia and again more beautiful antiques! I can't wait to come back to southern Colorado so that I can stay here again, the hardest part will be trying to decide which awesome room to stay in? ...or maybe the Indie house? I'm so glad my friends recommended this place to be. If you're looking for a place to stay near Antonito that's not the run of the mill chain hotel experience, try stepping into the past at the Steam Train Hotel, but with all the modern comfort, cleanliness, and amenities that we look for when we travel! I loved it, and will definitely be staying here again!! read more
