Not so big inside - I would say cosy is the word to describe the seating inside the coffee shop, deli and bar. With a selection of wine I presume this place is open in the evenings. Java is one that I have visited a number of times purely because I love the interior, the coffee, and it's outdoor seating under heaters. However, I can't help but wish Java offered more of an extensive menu. I'm not sure if the mini menu, which is all written on black boards which is a slight pain as you have to physically get up and walk around to find them, is meant to be small to keep it very 'unique'. After all, it specialises in mezze boards, meat and cheese platters, tarts and soups. I feel it should offer more lunchtime options, like baguettes with chips, jacket potatoes... just a few more filling options. Nevertheless, this is the second time I have been and experienced the meat and mezze platter, and they are really tasty. Just quite limited. I'll take my hat off to Java though as they are one of the only places in Uppermill to offer soya milk coffees, and the soya lattes are lovely too. Slightly uncomfortable eating and drinking upstaires when you elbow is literally falling onto the next-door table, but I suppose the crammed and close knit set-up adds to it's cosy feel and ambiance.

This store is a franchise store which is a big downer as it means you have to pay more for your beverage (I personally paid £0.60 more!), they do still accept Starbucks cards, however. The store its-self is set over two floors, but I found it to be pretty old-fashioned, dark and unwelcoming, with only a small counter right at the back of the store, they also had a small, heavy door to get through to get into the store, compared to the modern, glass automatic stores which most "outside" locations of Starbucks seem too have now (or at least an open door - after all it wasn't too chilly!) The staff seemed more interested in talking amongst themselves, and were rather rude and seemed disinterested in customers. My beverage quality was poor, despite asking for extra vanilla twice they didn't seem to put in extra, my drink was also coming out of the top of my cup with no napkins or attempt to clean it, which once again for me shows careless attitudes. Luckily I had some napkins in my bag from an earlier meal or I could have got wet, just trying to drink my beverage! They also don't seem to offer a reusable cup discount here, normally every Starbucks store gives you £0.25 back - either my server forgot it or they don't offer it, making an already expensive drink compared to regular stores again cost more! From start to finish, the vibe I got from this store in overall feel, service and beverage quality was frankly woeful, it made me even question if this really was a Starbucks, with the things I normally love about the coffee powerhouse being bad at this location. Franchise shouldn't mean sub-par! 1*

But here it did and the chap who brought my coffee over confirmed it, which was kind. The coffee was good, the ambience laid back and the feeling was of a haven from a bustling street and city. Eventually, I left my regal armchair to get back and on. This café sets a fine standard for competitors to meet.

They're open for cakes and coffee throughout the day and lunches comprise of soups, sandwiches, baked potatoes, salads and toasties. The cakes are delicious, as are the milkshakes made with real ice cream. Its only a small cafe though, so arrive early to avoid ending up disappointed! It can be a problem to get pushchairs in too, as there are steps to get in the door and its a bit tight for space inside. You also have to go upstairs to visit the loo.
