I regret hiring this law firm to handle my auto accident case. After being rear-ended in June 2023, the case finally settled in June 2025 -- two years later. Throughout that time, I had to initiate contact to get updates, and I only received my settlement check on July 31, 2025, after personally following up. While the attorney fee was 40% of the $20,000 settlement, there were also nearly $3,000 in legal costs and over $5,600 in medical expenses deducted. In the end, I received just $3,376.88 -- less than 17% of the total recovery. From a client's perspective, it felt like the majority of the settlement was gone before I saw anything. That was incredibly frustrating, especially given the time it took to resolve the case. In my personal opinion, this was the worst legal experience I've ever had. My family and I hired the Shawn Steel Law Firm after I was involved in a serious car accident. A drunk driver had hit my car while I was stopped at a stoplight causing my car to flip onto its side. I ended up in the hospital with a concussion, a sprained neck (whiplash), and TMJ. With medical bills pilling up, a totaled car sitting at an impound lot, and no help from our insurance company, we hired the firm to help us navigate through this uncertain process. The firm got me appointments with all the necessary doctors (with great reviews), managed all my medical bills, and got us the full settlement from the drunk driver's insurance agency. Though it is great to have a lawyer that wins, I also want to point out that everyone at the firm was extremely communicative throughout the process. In the beginning, after taking my case this law firm really seemed to have it together. It wasn't until the first mediation that I realized I had made a mistake by hiring them. Takeaways: 1) This law firm went into the mediations (there were 2) without a strategy. As a result, the defense set the tone and pace, offering no rebuttal in response to the defense's justification for reducing the asked for compensation i.e. a. Including allowing the defense to schedule an appointment with one of their medical experts without consulting me on my availability. Then acted like I was the jerk for insisting that the appointment be rescheduled due to my prior commitments. 2) This law firm is not equipped and/or lacks knowledge on how to handle cases involving Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and permanent scarring. Their modus operandi is to focus on incurred medical bills only, which is not how TBI / permanent scarring cases should be handled. 3) This law firm really pushes, as part of the final settlement, that they will negotiate with medical providers and insurance companies. Do not fall for this. Words of advice: 1) Know what your breakeven is before going into the mediation with them. Your breakeven is the settlement offer - (Attorney's cut + miscellaneous attorney fees + insurance company reimbursements + out of pocket expenses + missed work + etc...) This law firm won't know what it is. 2) Don't count on negotiations with your health insurance company or any other medical provider to reduce the amount of your bill incurred in the accident. Fiscally, there is no upside for the insurance companies and the law says they are entitled to full compensation. 3) Above all, don't forget, the first to get paid from your settlement is Shawn Steel Law Firm. read more

I was in a car accident where I was rear-ended at a high rate of speed and had my car totaled. It's been a year and a half since my accident, and the best this law firm could do on a settlement is an amount barely above my doctor bills. I have had ongoing pain since the accident, and they essentially brought me a settlement that wouldn't leave anything for my future bills or my pain and suffering. They do not fight for you, they just accept whatever the insurance company is willing to settle for - lazy law practice. If the other insurance company makes a good offer then you'll be satisfied, but if the other insurance company plays hardball then you will be dissatisfied because this law firm is only interested in easy money. read more

I was severely rear-ended at a stop light and received permanent damage to my back, hip and neck and Shawn Steel & Associates assigned an inept rookie lawyer, and I only receive $1500 and my car repaired. This case dragged on and on (well over 2 years) and the attorneys for the lady who rear-ended me in a raised 4x4 hired good lawyers, so Shawn Steel & Associates just settled for a pittance and did not fight to get me just payment for my injuries. Thank God for the VA and years of physical therapy because without that my body would be a basket case, but sad to say I still suffer from chronic pain from the accident! Shawn Steel & Associates talked a lot about how they would get me a nice judgement, but were slow on returning my calls. I was doubtful for most of the 3 years until Alexander took control of the case! CONS! Get EVERYTHING in writing! Don't meet in person because NOTHING said will be honored. I hired this firm in March of 2011 for an accident I was in, the other party 100% at fault. Here it is almost 6 years later, the insurance company paid the settlement last year and I'm still fighting with these guys for the amount I was guaranteed in writing. I have a signed agreement from Shawn Steel himself that they are refusing to honor. Now I have to pay another attorney to get my portion of my own settlement. They've taken the lions share and left me in debt, when the settlement was more than enough to cover everything. Terrible experience. This guy tried to bully me into accepting an awful settlement offer (I would be paid 2,000 of out an 18,000 offer). They actually told me if I didn't accept I would need to get a neck surgery and start making payments on my medical bills! They spent zero time on my case and zero effort in trying to get my medical bills reduced. When I didn't accept their offer, eventually the at fault insurance company reduced their offer to zero with false claims of previous injury. Then Shawn Steel just dropped my case and told me I was totally liable for all of my medical bills. Wow... I wish I could prosecute them. read more
